A Review of the New Superman Movie - Too Vulnerable? [ENG/SPA]

I finally got around to seeing the new Superman movie. It took me a while because I couldn't make it to the theater when it first came out, so I wanted to do it justice and watch it in good resolution. I finally found a 4K version, which I think is a must for evaluating and enjoying a film so full of effects, CGI, and action. It wasn't easy to wait that long; there's so much content on different platforms, and I wanted to avoid spoilers to form my own opinion without being swayed by others.

Finalmente pude ver la nueva película de Superman, me tomo un tiempo hacerlo porque no pude ir al cine en el momento que se estrenó, entonces quería hacerle justicia y verla con una buena resolución, finalmente la encontré en 4k que creo que es lo justo para poder evaluar y disfrutar una película tan cargada de efectos, cgi y mucha acción. No fue fácil esperar tanto para verla, hay demasiado contenido en distintas plataformas y no quería tener spoilers, para tener una opinión propia sin verme afectado por el criterio de otros.

I mention this because it's hard to watch this movie without being tempted to compare it to previous films and series, especially Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, even with 12 years between them. This new movie doesn't focus on Superman's origins like the others. Instead, it offers a brief timeline mentioning that metahumans appeared on Earth three centuries ago, leading up to the arrival of Kal-El. It's established that he was announced as Superman three years ago and just three weeks ago, he prevented a war, immediately showing the character's global impact.

Esto lo digo porque es difícil no ver esta película sin estar predispuesto a establecer una comparativa con películas y series anteriores, en especial con la de Man of Steel de Zack Snyder aunque haya 12 años de diferencia entre ambas. Esta nueva película no se centra mucho como las anteriores en hablar de los inicios de Superman, aunque ofrece una breve cronología mencionando que los metahumanos aparecen en la tierra hace tres siglos, hasta la llegada de Kal_El, que se anunció hace tres años como Superman y hace tres semanas evita una guerra, definiendo de entrada el impacto global que tiene el personaje.

The plot is a bit of the same old, same old: Superman's fight against Lex Luthor, who openly declares himself his enemy and seeks to destroy his image to get him out of the way and achieve his goals. There are many "modern" details about the plot I could mention, but I'm more interested in highlighting the positive and negative aspects I noticed. First, the biggest change is immediately obvious: the colorful tone of this new movie contrasts sharply with the darker, grittier feel of the previous ones. You can even see it in Superman's suit, which is a much brighter blue.

La trama es un poco más de lo mismo, la lucha de Superman contra Lex Luthor, quien se declara abiertamente su enemigo y busca destruir su imagen para quitarlo del camino y alcanzar sus fines. Hay muchos detalles "modernos" con respecto a la trama que puedo mencionar pero me interesa más resaltar los aspectos positivos y negativos que observe. Primero: el primer gran cambio se observa a la primera, el tono colorido de esta nueva película contrasta con las anteriores que son más oscuras, y eso se nota también con el traje de superman, es azul más brillante.

I've been thinking a lot about how to describe this aspect, and I'd say the movie is self-contained. It isn't a typical film that ends by blatantly setting up a sequel or a spin-off. This is remarkable because it's been called the start of a new DC universe, and we're so used to Marvel where every movie is a prelude to the next. Even the post-credit scenes don't refer to a new film.

He pensado mucho en cómo definir este aspecto, y se me ocurre que la película se contiene a si misma, es decir, no es la típica película que está anunciando una secuela o spin off sin haber terminado. Esto es destacable porque la han calificado como el inicio de un nuevo universo para DC, y estamos tan acostumbrados con Marvel que cada película es una antesala de una que está por venir, incluso las escenas post creditos no te hacen referencia a una nueva película.

Another thing I'm not sure is entirely positive is how vulnerable Superman is, both physically and mentally. We see this in one of the first scenes, where he has a couple's argument with Lois Lane that made me uncomfortable and even a bit annoyed because it felt so immature. That's why I'm not sure it's a positive, but I do understand why they did it this way. It's an attempt to show a hero who is constantly struggling with his own identity while having to prioritize saving others and finding the good in people, even when they don't have it.

Otra cosa que no se si es positiva, es que Superman es vulnerable tanto física como mentalmente, eso lo vemos en una de las primeras escenas donde tiene una discusión de pareja con Lois Lane que incluso me incomodo y hasta llegó a irritarme porque lo sentí inmaduro, por eso digo que no se si es tan positiva, pero si entiendo el porque de hacerlo de esta manera, es una idea de mostrar a un héroe que lucha constantemente con su yo teniendo que priorizar la salvación de los demás y ver su lado bueno, aun si no lo tienen.

The performances by Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane are quite good. Luthor's character is very well developed; you can really feel his hatred and envy. Lois doesn't feel as fragile as in previous films, which I liked. She even ends up saving Superman. I also really liked other characters like Mr. Terrific, Jimmy Olsen, and Metamorpho played by Anthony Carrigan. I hope they continue in future installments, and well, Krypto reminded me why I haven't had a dog in so long, lol.

Las actuaciones de Nicholas Hoult como Lex Luthor y Rachel Brosnahan como Lois Lane son bastante buenas. El personaje de Luthor está muy bien desarrollado su odio y envidia se llega a sentir, Lois no se siente tan frágil como en las películas anteriores y eso me gusto, incluso ella llega a salvar a Superman. Otros personajes como el de Mr. Terrific de Jimmy Olsen y el Metamorfo de Anthony Carrigan me gustaron mucho, ojala continuen en futuras entregas y bueno Krypto me hizo recordar porque no tengo perro desde hace tanto tiempo jeje.

There are a lot of characters to mention, and this is probably a negative point—there are so many that some are left underdeveloped, with just a few lines. This was the case with Perry White, played by the great actor Wendell Pierce, who I think was a victim of editing cuts, which feels like a waste. Another negative is the forced humor. There were definitely several moments where a joke didn't fit into a scene, interrupting the flow and making it obvious how hard they were trying to make it more "family-friendly."

Son muchos personajes que mencionar y quizás este si es un punto negativo, son tantos que quedan sin desarrollo, con unas pocas líneas como el caso de Perry White interpretado por el gran actor Wendell Pierce que creo que fue víctima de los recortes de edición, lo que me parece un desperdicio. A este le podemos sumar el humor forzado, definitivamente hubo varios momentos donde un chiste no encajaba en una escena interrumpiéndola, dejando claro lo mucho que se querían enforzar por hacerla mas family friendly.

In summary, you could say that this new Superman movie is a good start for the DC universe. While I wasn't thrilled to see a Superman so vulnerable, I know that more traditional fans approve of it, saying it sticks close to the comics and the source material. That's a good thing because it satisfies them, and with its colorful tone and plot, it also pleases the general audience by creating excitement and giving hope that the superhero genre can be fun again.

En resumen, se podría decir que esta nueva película de Superman es un buen inicio para el universo DC, aunque a mi no me causó gran emoción ver a un Superman tan vulnerable, pero se que los fanáticos más ortodoxos lo aprueban declarando que se apega mucho a los cómics, como referencia a las bases de la historia, lo cual eso es bueno porque los deja satisfechos y además con su colorido y trama, también complace a la audiencia en general porque causó emoción, dando esperanza que el género de superhéroes vuelve a ser divertido.
