Children's Day celebrations started early this year, and I sat down with my kids to watch this wonderful movie. The animated version is one of my favorites, and my kids love it too, but after the recent failures of other live-action films, we watched it with some apprehension. I say apprehension because after seeing Lilo & Stitch, we were very disappointed. The only thing we liked was Stitch's animation, but they ruined the story and removed key characters. Honestly, there hasn't been a single animated movie that we've liked until now.

Las celebraciones del día del niño comenzaron antes y me senté con mis hijos a ver esta maravillosa película. La versión animada es de mis favoritas, también a mis hijos les encanta, pero tras los recientes fracasos de otras películas live action, con algo de recelo decidimos verla. Digo recelo porque luego de ver Lilo y Stitch quedamos muy decepcionados, lo único que nos gusto fue la animación de Stitch, pero dañaron la historia y quitaron personajes clave, la verdad no ha habido una sola película animada que nos haya gustado hasta ahora.

Adapting existing stories always seems to be a challenge, especially if there's already been a first adaptation. It usually works well when they come from books, and we finally put images to a story we loved so much. But when a story has already been perfectly told with animation, it's not easy to surpass it. I think the main problem is that, with the desire to do something original, "changes" are made from the perspective of the first movie, which turns out to be unfavorable for fans.

Adaptar historias ya existentes parece ser siempre un desafío, principalmente si ya hubo una primera adaptación, normalmente funciona bien cuando vienen de libros y por fin le ponemos imagen a la historia que tanto nos gusto, pero cuando ya se contó perfectamente con animación, superarlo no es fácil. Creo que el principal problema es que con el deseo de querer hacer algo original, realizan "cambios" desde la perspectiva de la primera película lo cual resulta desfavorable para los fans.

But with How to Train Your Dragon, it's different. The live-action version perfectly adheres to the original book and animated versions of the story. The variations are few; they removed some things I loved, but mainly to give it a slower pace worthy of a "real" movie. Despite so much criticism about whether there are changes or if it sticks to the original story, the important thing is to enjoy it. Although it's almost identical to the first, I really enjoyed it. I loved the CGI work on the dragons, especially the ending when they fight the Alpha.

Pero con el caso de "Como entrenar a tu dragón" es diferente, acá el live action se apega perfectamente a la historia original de los libro y la versión animada, las variantes son pocas, quitaron algunas cosas que me encantaron, pero principalmente para darle un ritmo más lento digno de una película "real". Pero tras tantas críticas sobre si hay cambios o se apega a la historia original, lo importante es disfrutarla, aunque es casi idéntica a la primera, yo la disfrute mucho, me encanto el trabajo de CGI de los dragones, especialmente el final cuando combaten al Alfa.

I was reading a critique about the idea that animated movies must be adapted into live-action to be considered "real cinema," which I believe is very wrong. It's incorrect to think that animated films only serve to tell children's stories. A perfect example is the recent movie, Predator: Killer of Killers. For me, it's the best of this year, and it's a story that absolutely wouldn't have worked in live-action. That's why I think it's best to stop retelling stories that already worked in one format and focus on being original.

Hay una crítica que estuve leyendo sobre una idea que las películas animadas deben ser adaptadas al live action para ser consideradas cine de verdad, lo cual considero muy errado. Esta mal creer que las películas animadas solo sirven para contar historias infantiles, un ejemplo perfecto es la reciente película Predator: Killer of Killers, para mi la mejor de este año y es una historia que para nada hubiera funcionado en un live action. Por eso creo que lo mejor es dejar de recontar historia que ya funcionaron en un formato y se dediquen a ser originales.
