Beyond the Gore: "The Bone Temple" is too extreme [ENG/SPA]

Today I want to talk about 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. It’s been on my watchlist since it premiered, and I finally decided to dive in to finish the saga. To be honest, I’d been putting it off for a while because it is extremely brutal. Many have called it "grotesque" due to its over-the-top, graphic scenes of torture and flaying. Consider this a fair warning: if you have a weak stomach, skip this one. The themes and visuals are incredibly explicit.

Hoy quiero hablarles de 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, película que tenia pendiente desde que se estrenó, y que finalmente me decidi a verla para completar la saga, pero que por un tiempo me negaba hacerlo porque es extremadamente brutal. Muchos la califican de grotesca debido a sus escenas exageradamente fuertes de tortura y desollamiento, así que les advierto que si son personas sensibles pasen de largo está película, porque los temas y las imágenes son realmente explicitas.

Following last year’s release, this sequel was also written by Alex Garland, but Nia DaCosta took over the director's chair. That definitely explains why it feels so different from its predecessor. The plot kicks off just moments after the post-credits scene of the previous film. If you haven't seen that yet, I highly recommend you go back and watch it first; this is a direct sequel, and you’ll need that context to understand what’s going on.

Tras el estreno del año pasado, esta continuación también es escrita por Alex Garland, pero la dirección pasa a manos de Nia DaCosta, lo que claramente explica porque es tan diferente a su antecesora. La trama arranca instantes despues del final post creditos de la entrega anterior, así que si no lo haz visto, te recomiendo que lo hagas primero, porque es una continuación directa y para entenderla es necesario.

We catch up again with young Spike (Alfie Williams), who unfortunately crosses paths with the "Jimmys"—a gang of satanic sadists who wear colorful tracksuits and blonde wigs to mimic their terrifying leader, Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell). I have to say, O’Connell kills it here. His portrayal of a cult leader who treats violence like a religious liturgy and believes he’s the son of the devil is truly disturbing.

Nos encontramos de nuevo con el joven Spike (Alfie Williams), quien desafortunadamente se encuentra con los "Jimmys", una pandilla de sádicos satánicos que visten ropa deportiva de colores y pelucas rubias, para parecerse todos a su aterrador lider Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) que desde ya les digo hace un papelazo; su interpretación de un líder de culto que usa la violencia como liturgia y se cree el hijo del maligno, es verdaderamente perturbador.

For me, the real reason to watch this movie is Ralph Fiennes. He plays Dr. Ian Kelson, a man living in an underground bunker listening to 80s vinyl, who has built a literal temple out of human bones to honor those killed by the Rage virus. Kelson has a bizarre relationship with Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry), an "Alpha" infected. He begins administering morphine to Samson to soothe his rage, which leads to a massive discovery.

Pero, para mí, por quien vale la pena realmente ver esta película es Ralph Fiennes que interpreta al Dr. Ian Kelson, el cual vive en un búnker subterráneo escuchando discos de vinil de los 80 y que ha construido un templo literal de huesos humanos para honrar a los que han muertos muerto por la pandemia de la rabia. Nelson tiene una extraña relación con Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry), un infectado "alfa" al que comienza aplicarle morfina para calmar su rabia, lo que lo lleva a un gran descubrimiento.

The scene that really put this movie on everyone's radar involves Dr. Kelson tricking the Jimmys by "playing the devil" to the beat of an iconic Iron Maiden song. It’s a brilliant moment where he stages a whole performance to feed into the group's psychosis, all to buy himself enough time to save his skin and continue his research.

Pero lo que puso a esta película en el radar de muchos, es la escena donde el Dr. Kelson engaña a los Jimmy's al interpreta al maligno al ritmo de una icónica canción de Iron Maiden. Lo genial del momento es como monta toda una escena que alimenta la psicosis de este grupo de enfermos, a fin de ganar tiempo y quizás poder salvar su vida y continuar con lo que acababa de descubrir.

I won't lie—the movie is intense and unsettling from start to finish. The infected (or zombies) actually take a backseat here. The film focuses more on "ideological horror" and just how sick people can become. It shows survivors destroying one another through fanaticism and twisted faith. It’s a visceral journey that explores the psychological toll of living through such a tragedy.

No voy a negar que la película es fuerte y perturbadora de principio a fin. Los infectados o zombies pasan a segundo plano, porque se enfoca en el horror ideológico y lo enfermo que pueden llegar a ser las personas, como los superviviente se destruyen unos a otros por culpa del fanatismo y fe torcida. Es un viaje visceral que plantea lo que puede ocasionar en las personas vivir momentos tan tragicos.
