DMZ the HBO miniseries that made me disappointed [ENG/SPA]

What's up cinephile, I want to tell you a little bit about the most recent HBO miniseries that just premiered on March 17, DMZ or Demilitarized Zone for its acronym in English. A miniseries that has only 4 episodes of approximately 1 hour, which personally gave me a lot of hype to know that it is based on the famous comics of the same name.

Expectations regarding this miniseries were very high, especially when the news came out in 2020 that the series based on one of DC's most modern comics would finally reach the screen, which had great impact and acceptance not only among comic book fans, but also gained many new fans among all types of readers, by proposing an unprecedented and controversial story despite being fiction.

Que tal amigos cinéfilos, quiero contarles un poco de la miniserie mas reciente de HBO que se acaba de estrenar el 17 de marzo, DMZ o Zona desmilitarizada por sus siglas en ingles. Una miniserie que cuenta con solo 4 episodios de aproximadamente 1 hora, que personalmente me dio mucho hype al saber que se encuentra basada en los famosos comics que llevan el mismo nombre.
Las expectativas con respecto a esta miniserie eran muy grandes, especialmente cuando se supo la noticia en 2020 que finalmente llegaría a la pantalla la serie basada en unos de los comics más modernos de DC, que tuvo gran impacto y aceptación no solo entre los fanáticos de las historietas, gano muchos nuevos adeptos entre todo tipo de lectores, al proponer una historia inédita y controversial a persa de ser ficción.

The story on which this miniseries is based is simply great, it is about a large-scale conflict where the protagonists are ordinary people of society, who are involved in something so big that forces them to rise to the heights of the circumstances, for the greater good, but having to fight with the traditional powers that refuse to expire, that's why when I learned that soon we would have this miniseries, the emotion greatly seized me.

But now that I have finished watching it, and I have to say that I finished it almost forced, I was very disappointed, because it is very little attached to what the comics offered for more than 12 volumes in 6 years, that is, with so much abundance of material to choose from, one better than another, they wanted to develop a drama, within a conflict as serious as a civil war, that at first catches you, but in the second chapter you lose interest, so let me give you a little context so that you are also able to judge.

La historia sobre la cual se basa esta miniserie es sencillamente genial, trata de un conflicto a gran escala donde los protagonistas son personas comunes de la sociedad, que se ven involucradas en algo tan grande, que les obliga a elevarse a las alturas de las circunstancias, en pro de un bien mayor, pero teniendo que luchar con los poderes tradicionales que se niegan a caducar, es por eso que cuando supe de que pronto tendríamos esta miniserie, la emoción me embargo grandemente.
Pero ahora que he terminado de verla, y dedo decir que termine de hacerlo casi que obligado, quede muy decepcionado, porque se apega muy poco a lo que los comics ofrecieron por mas de 12 volúmenes en 6 años, es decir, con tanta abundancia de material para escoger, uno mejor que otro, quisieron desarrollar un drama, dentro de un conflicto tan grave como una guerra civil, que en un principio te atrapa, pero en el segundo capitulo pierdes el interés, así que déjenme darles un poco de contexto para que ustedes también sean capaces de juzgar.

Context

DMZ has as its background a civil war that originates from the uprising of the central states of the United States due to the exhaustion that the population feels for the warlike attitude that the government of the nation has maintained for decades as foreign policy, which has brought consequences that the common citizen can hardly overcome. This is simply fascinating, this is a conflict and a good problem, one of those that make you want to know more and how it ends, because there is no way out, just as in a civil war, the sides cannot reach an agreement.

De fondo DMZ tiene como historia una guerra civil que se origina por el levantamiento de los estados centrales de los Estados Unidos debido al agotamiento que la población siente por la actitud bélica que el gobierno de la nación ha mantenido por décadas como política exterior, que ha traído consecuencias que el ciudadano común difícilmente puede sobre llevar. Esto es sencillamente fascinante, esto es conflicto y problema de los bueno, de esos que te hacen querer saber mas y como termina, porque por ningún lado se le ve salida, tal cual como es una guerra civil, los bandos no logran ponerse de acuerdo.

Es aquí donde entramos en la trama central de los comics, Nueva York como escenario central queda dividido en medio de la guerra, siendo la zona mas afectada la isla de Manhattan, al no poder evacuar a todos sus ciudadanos, especialmente las clases más humildes, dejando alrededor de 300 mil personas dentro de la isla, quedando en medio de los 2 ejércitos, el FSA en Nueva Jersey y el ejercito Federado en Brooklyn.

There is a ceasefire due to a massacre where many people lose their lives, and the island of Manhattan is too large to be controlled by both armies, causing them to initiate a truce that lasts for several years, until the journalist Matty Roth enters the scene, who lives multiple experiences during his stay in DMZ, facing factions of power and the survival of the fittest, and how little by little a different system of government is established, which seems to be ideal to heal a divided nation.

Se da un cese al fuego debido a una masacre donde muchas personas pierden la vida, además que la isla de Manhattan es muy grande para ser controlada por ambos ejércitos, provocando que se inicien una tregua que se mantiene por varios años, hasta que entra en escena el periodista Matty Roth que vive múltiples experiencias durante su permanencia en DMZ, enfrentándose a facciones de poder y la supervivencia del mas fuerte, y como poco a poco se establece un sistema de gobierno diferente, que parece ser ideal para sanar a una nación dividida.

Plot of the miniseries

DMZ as a miniseries is based on the story found in the volume 06: "blood in the game" interviews, where a Latina mother who grew up in Harlem, and together with a war veteran man start a family that is separated by internal conflicts and now by the civil war that comes to their city. In trying to evacuate the island, she loses her 15-year-old son, forcing her to move on by leaving the island. She continues to serve as a doctor and meets someone who can bring her back to DMZ in order to find the son she lost 8 years ago.

DMZ como miniserie cuenta se basa en la historia que encontramos en el volume 06: “blood in the game” interviews, donde una madre latina que se creció en Harlem, y junto a un hombre veterano de la guerra inician una familia que se ve separada por los conflictos internos y ahora por la guerra civil que llega a su ciudad. Al trata de evacuar la isla, pierde a su hijo de 15 años, viéndose en la obligación de continuar adelante abandonando la isla. Sigue prestando servicio como doctora, y es así como conoce a quien la puede introducir de vuelta en DMZ, con el propósito de hallar al hijo que perdió hace 8 años.

A great cast that did what they could

I have nothing to reproach the cast, Zee our protagonist played by Rosario Dawson does a very good job, handling various emotions in the midst of crises and complex conflicts, which at times seem exaggerated, but it is not, is that the scenes are so simple and empty that what stands out is the emphasis of his performance.

Al elenco no tengo nada que reprocharle, Zee nuestra protagonista interpretada por Rosario Dawson hace un trabajo muy bueno, manejando varias emociones en medio de crisis y conflictos complejos, que por momentos parecen exagerados, pero no lo es, es que las escenas son tan simples y vacias que lo que mas resalta es el énfasis de su actuación.

Benjamin Bratt who plays Parco, the antagonist of the series, a veteran of the war who was caught in the middle of the invasion, who in the past was Zee's partner, now has pretensions to rule DMZ, gaining the support of each of the factions of the island, coercing them or buying them with gold. Bratt plays a good role, the Latino who grew up in Harlem, with a strong personality to survive.

Benjamin Bratt que interpreta a Parco el antagonista de la serie, un veteranos de la guerra que quedo atrapado en medio de la invasión, que en el pasado fue pareja de Zee, ahora tiene pretensiones de gobernar DMZ, haciéndose con el apoyo de cada una de las facciones de la isla, coaccionándolas o comprándolas con oro. Bratt hace un buen papel, el latino que creció en Harlem, con una personalidad fuerte para sobrevivir.

The disappointment

I do not want to say that the story that was chosen is bad, but being a miniseries of only 4 chapters, causing it to be too short and direct, which causes that a hasty closure should be given, when there were infinite possibilities to connect as many stories as those offered by the comics, and although Rosario Dawson made a titanic effort to keep the interest of the audience, it has not yet finished the second chapter, and the strength of the story begins to dissipate and is not able to keep you hooked.

I felt some discomfort at the end, because I kept thinking that as a mother who loses a child, she even left the island and did not stay to look for her son, if she was such a good mother she pretended to be. I think any mother or father would not give up so quickly, even if there was a war, she would have stayed until she found her son again. I hope you are encouraged to watch the series and draw your own conclusions, until a new publication.

No quiero decir que la historia que se escogió esta mal, pero al ser una miniserie de 4 capítulos nada más, ocasionando que sea demasiado corta y directa, lo que provoca que un cierre apresurado se deba dar, cuando habían infinitas posibilidades de conectar tantas historias como las que ofrecen los comics, y a pesar que Rosario Dawson hizo un esfuerzo titánico por mantener el interés de la audiencia, aún no ha terminado el segundo capítulo, ya la fuerza de la historia se empieza a disipar y no es capaz de mantenerte enganchado
Me causo cierto malestar el final, porque no dejaba de pensar que como madre que pierde a un hijo, aun se fue de la isla y no se quedó a buscar al hijo, si tan buena madre pretendía ser. Pienso que cualquier padre o madre no se daría por vencido tan rápidamente, incluso aun en guerra se hubiese quedado hasta dar con el hijo nuevamente. Espero que se animen a ver la serie y saquen sus propias conclusiones, hasta una nueva publicación.
