From book to mediocrity - "The Woman in Cabin 10" and the fatigue of the "no one believes me" trope

I decided to watch this movie because of its genre, but with some skepticism, as I haven't yet been able to say I've loved a Netflix film—quite the opposite with their TV shows. A mystery and investigative thriller always grabs my attention, and if you add a good cast, there's a possibility for success. However, when the story comes from a book, there's also the chance it could be a complete flop.

Decidí ver esta película por su género, pero con cierta incertidumbre, ya que hasta ahora no ha habido una película de Netflix que pueda decir que me ha encantado, todo lo contrario con sus series. Un thrillers de misterio e investigación siempre llama mi atención, si a eso le sumas un buen reparto existe la posibilidad de ser un éxito, sin embargo, cuando su historia proviene de un libro, cabe la posibilidad que sea un rotundo fracaso.

The plot of The Woman in Cabin 10 follows Laura Blacklock (Low), an investigative journalist going through an emotional crisis due to a recent trauma that isn't clearly explained. This leads her to accept an assignment covering a fundraising event aboard a luxurious yacht, a trip organized by Richard Bulmer and his sick wife, Anne.

La trama de The Woman in Cabin 10 sigue a Laura Blacklock (Low), una periodista de investigación que tiene una crisis emocional debido a un trauma reciente pero que no se deja claro, lo que la lleva a aceptar cubrir un evento de recaudación de fondos a bordo de un lujoso yate, un viaje organizado por Richard Bulmer y su esposa enferma, Anne.

At the start of the trip, Laura runs into a woman in Cabin 10. That very night, she witnesses what appears to be a murder; she hears a fight and then watches a woman fall overboard. When she reports it to the crew, they all discredit her because apparently, no one is occupying Cabin 10. This makes her question whether she truly witnessed a homicide. Everyone starts labeling her crazy, but that doesn't stop her from investigating what really happened to bring the facts to light.

So far, it all sounds fine—just another suspense thriller to solve a murder. The setting, being a ship, limits the scope for the plot's development, but that's not the main problem. The real issue is the obviousness that presents itself as the plot progresses. The first is the villain; with just the presence of Guy Pierce, you already know who it is, as his roles are often of this style. The other is the mystery itself; the movie is 90 minutes long, and it's possible to solve the mystery by the 40-minute mark.

Hasta acá todo suena bien, es un thrillers más de suspenso para esclarecer un homicidio. El escenario al ser un barco, le resta amplitud al desarrollo de la trama, pero ese no es el principal problema, son las obviedades que se presentan a medida que avanza la trama. La primera es el villano, con solo la presencia de Guy Pierce ya sabes quién es, ya que sus papeles suelen ser de este estilo. Lo otro es el misterio, la película es de 90 minutos y ya a los 40 ya es posible resolverlo.

The plot feels very generic, using tired clichés that have been explored in many other productions; honestly, it offers nothing special. Laura, the protagonist, seems trapped in a repetitive cycle of seeing strange things and asking herself why no one believes her, repeating this cycle over and over throughout the first half. Add to that a boring ending, following a lack of mystery and excitement, which eliminates the possibility of a concise and powerful conclusion. Truthfully, the film is mediocre; I do not recommend it at all.

La trama se siente muy genérica, usando recursos trillados, ya se han explorado en muchas otras producciones, la verdad no ofrece nada especial. Laura la protagonista se le ve atrapada en un ciclo repetitivo de ver cosas extrañas, preguntarse porque nadie le cree, repitiendo este ciclo una y otra vez durante la primera mitad. A eso le sumas un final aburrido, tras poco misterio y emoción eliminado la posibilidad de tener un cierra conciso y fuerte, la verdad la película es mediocre, no la recomiendo para nada.
