Let me tell you why Karate Kid Legends disappoints and entertains [ENG/SPA]

As a kid, I watched the original Karate Kid movies on open-air TV channels in my country so many times that I remember growing to hate them. That all changed with the arrival of the Cobra Kai series. I recall it was first released on YouTube as an experiment to gauge audience reception; it was so successful it climbed all the way to Netflix. But now the story has become oversaturated, which made me wonder, with this new movie coming out, "Is this film even necessary?"

En mi niñez tuve la oportunidad de ver por primera vez las primeras películas de Karate kid, las pasaban en canales de televisión abierta de mi pais una y otra vez que recuerdo llegar a odiarlas. Esto cambió con la llegada de la serie Kobra Kai, recuerdo que se público primero en YouTube como un experimento a ver la receptividad de la audiencia, fue tan exitoso que escaló hasta Netflix, pero ya ha llegado al punto que se sobresaturó la historia, por eso con la salida de esta nueva historia me pregunté ¿es necesaria esta película?

I have a mixed opinion, to say the least, regarding this movie—it’s a blend of disappointment and entertainment. The premise is simple and repetitive: a kid who needs to be trained for a tournament. This time it's Lee Fong, who moves to New York. He knows kung fu but isn't quite good enough since his brother's death after a tournament. In his new home, he must face a bully in a martial arts tournament, and to perform better, he's trained by Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio).

Tengo una opinión mixta por decirlo de una manera, con relación a esta película, es una mezcla de decepción con entretenimiento. La premisa es sencilla y repetitiva, un chico que necesita ser entrenado para un torneo, esta vez se trata de Lee Fong, que se muda a Nueva York, sabe kung fu pero no termina de ser bueno desde la muerte de su hermano tras un torneo. En su nueva casa debe enfrentar un bravucón en un torneo de artes marciales y para tener un mejor desempeños es entrenado por el señor Han (Jackie Chan) y Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio).

When I saw the runtime was only an hour and 30 minutes, I was surprised. I was even more surprised when it ended after everything I’d seen; it felt super rushed. As the scenes unfolded, I kept wondering when X issue would be resolved, knowing there were only a few minutes left, and that was frustrating. I don't know if it's accurate to say, but for me, this is a sign of a confused script, and the film lacks a clear identity. It's romantic, deals with school challenges, the conflict of being a foreigner, learning a new martial art—honestly, there's so much going on that you don't know what the message is.

Cuando vi el tiempo de duración me sorprendió que fueran solo 1h con 30 minutos, me sorprendió más aún cuando termino tras todo lo que vi, la sentí super apresurada, a medida que transcurrían las escenas me preguntaba cuando iba a concretar X asunto sabiendo que solo le quedaban pocos minutos, eso me desesperaba. No se si sea acertado decir, pero esto para mi es una señal de un guión confuso, y la película no tiene una identidad clara, es romántica, los retos escolares, el conflicto de ser extranjero, aprender una nueva arte marcial, la verdad son tantas cosas que no sabes cual es el mensaje.

The trailers showed Daniel LaRusso's involvement, and I liked the idea of combining karate and kung fu with Mr. Han. But LaRusso only appears at the very end of the film, and his training scenes are oddly inserted in the middle of the tournament—it's wild. Mr. Han's character is now completely different; he seems to have overcome the conflicts from the Jaden Smith movie very well, and we're never told how he reached his current state. One thing both characters have in common is that they’re wasted, missing the opportunity to deepen the student-teacher relationship.

Los trailer mostraban la participación de Daniel LaRusso, me agradaba esa idea de combinar karate y kung fu con con el Sr. Han, pero este personaje aparece hasta el final de la película y sus escenas de entrenamiento son incluidas en medio del torneo, una locura. El personaje del Sr. Han ahora es completamente distinto, los conflictos de la película con Jaden Smith parece haberlos superado muy bien, y nunca se cuenta cómo llegó a su estado actual. Algo si tienen en común los dos personajes, son desperdiciados perdiéndose la oportunidad de profundizar la relación estudiante maestro.

Despite so many shortcomings, I had fun with the movie. You might think I'm crazy after so much criticism, but the reason is that there are good things. For example, Lee Fong's character is quite charismatic, and the fact that he already knows kung fu saves us from that cliché of having to turn a useless person into a martial arts master. Although their screen time was limited, the on-screen chemistry between Ben Wang (Lee Fong), Ralph Macchio, and Jackie Chan is very good. There were moments that brought a lot of laughs, as well as several acrobatics that looked quite natural and not forced, unlike in Cobra Kai.

A pesar de tantos desaciertos, me divertí con la película, pensaran que estoy loco después de tantas críticas, la razón es que si hay cosas que son buenas, por ejemplo, el personaje de Lee Fong es bastante carismático, el que sepa kung fu nos ahorra esa parte cliché de tener que convertir a un inútil en un maestro de artes marciales. Aunque su participación fue poca, la química en pantalla entre Ben Wang (Lee Fong), Ralph Macchio y Jackie Chan es muy buena, hubo momentos de dan bastante risa, y también de varias acrobacias que se ven bastante naturales y no forzadas como en kobra kai.

In summary, Karate Kid Legends is a film that generates conflict because you don't know whether to love it or hate it. While it has issues with its script, rushed pacing, and character development, it can still entertain you, thanks to the strong chemistry of its main trio. I'm sure this will delight unconditional fans of the saga who will be willing to overlook its deficiencies.

En resumen Karate Kid Leyendas es una película que genera conflicto porque no sabes si amarla u odiarla. Aunque tiene problemas de guión, ritmo apresurado y desarrollo de personajes, puede llegar advertirte, gracias a la fuerte química de su trío protagónico, lo cual estoy seguro le encantará a los fans incondicionales de la saga que estarán dispuestos a pasar por alto sus deficiencias.
