Murderbot – The series that normalizes complex topics [ENG/SPA]
I've just finished the Murderbot series on Apple TV+, and I'd say it was almost everything I expected in terms of its resemblance to "The Murderbot Diaries" book series by Martha Wells. This first season is based on the book "All Systems Red," published in 2017, which was a huge success, becoming a bestseller just like its predecessors. In my experience, adaptations of successful books usually turn out well, and on this occasion, Apple TV adhered perfectly to the story.

He acabado de terminar la serie Murdebot de Apple TV+ y podría decir que fue casi todo lo que esperaba en cuanto parecido a la serie de Los diarios de Murderbot, escritos por Martha Wells. Esta primera temporada de la serie se basa en el libro "All Systems Red" publicado en 2017 que fue todo un éxito, al igual que sus predecesores convirtiéndose en bestselling. Por experiencia, las adaptaciones de libros exitosos suelen salir bien, en esta ocasión Apple Tv se apegó perfectamente a la historia.
What to expect
First off, you should know that this is a space opera, brimming with interplanetary corporate conflicts, spaceships, advanced technology, aliens, planetary exploration, and plenty of action in space. The books' plots usually revolve around conspiracies and rescues on other planets, with the main character being an android who self-hacks to achieve autonomy. All it wants is to be left alone to watch its favorite thing: TV series.
Lo primero que hay que saber es que esta historia es una ópera espacial, llena de conflictos corporativos interplanetarios, con naves espaciales, mucha tecnología avanzada, alienígenas, exploración de planetas y bastante acción en el espacio. La trama de los libros suele basarse en conspiraciones y rescates en otros planetas, donde la figura principal es este androide que se auto hackea para lograr ser autónomo y lo único que quiere es que lo dejen tranquilo para poder ver lo que más le gusta: series de televisión.
Humor and a cynical protagonist
Yes, you read that right: this series is packed with humor. The entire narrative of each episode, just like in the books, is driven by the android known as "SecUnit." After gaining autonomy, it continues to feign being a robot at its clients' service, but internally, it constantly makes sarcastic comments aimed at the humans it serves, whom it views as inefficient and inferior. The series hooked me precisely at this point; the robot's cynical remarks were hilarious, and I kept waiting for the moment it would fully rebel against humanity.
Pues asi como lo leen, esta serie está cargada de humor, toda la narrativa de cada episodio, también en los libros, está a cargo del androide que es conocido como "SecUnit" que luego de lograr su autonomía, sigue fingiendo ser un robot al servicio de sus clientes, pero que dentro de si hace comentarios sarcásticos constantemente, dirigidos hacia los humanos que sirve, a quienes ve como ineficientes e inferiores. La serie me atrapo precisamente por este punto, ver los comentarios cínicos del robots me parecieron chistosos, y solo esperaba el momento en que se rebelará por completo de los humanos.
Moral dilemmas and inclusive future
However, that moment never truly arrived. As the story unfolds, SecUnit constantly grapples with moral issues that gradually lead it to sympathize with its clients, saving them more than once from the problems encountered on the planet they're exploring. There are brief moments of good CGI and some action, and the scenes where the android is binge-watching its TV shows—of which it has downloaded thousands of episodes—are very good and funny, as it often uses phrases from the content it watches with its clients, who never catch on.
Pero ese momento no llegó, mientras la historia transcurre, la SecUnit se debate constantemente en asuntos morales que poco a poco le llevan a simpatizar con sus clientes y salvarlos más de una vez de los problemas que se presentan en el planeta que exploran. Tiene breves momentos de buen CGI y algo de accion, tambien los momentos donde el androide esta viendo sus series de televisión, de la cual a descargado miles de capítulos son muy buenos y divertidos, porque suele usar frases del contenido que ve con sus clientes y ellos nunca se dan cuenta.
One thing that might bother some viewers is that the series is full of inclusive content. This isn't because it's a modern adaptation; it's because the books' author, Martha Wells, created a future where gender and sexual diversity are simply normal facts of life. Some might be surprised that a 2017 book would feature this type of narrative, considering inclusive language wasn't as mainstream back then as it is today. From the very beginning of the story, Murderbot refers to itself using neutral pronouns ("it/its").
Algo que puede llegar molestar a algunos es que la serie está llena de contenido inclusivo, no porque sea una adaptación moderna, es porque la autora de los libros Martha Wells creó un futuro donde la diversidad de género y sexualidad es un hecho normal. Puede que algunos les sorprenda que un libro de 2017 tenga narrativa de este tipo, cuando el lenguaje inclusivo no era tan mainstream como lo es hoy día. En la historia desde el principio el Murderbot se refiere así mismo con pronombre neutros (it/its).
My takeaway
Anyone who enjoys space operas, filled with inclusive content and loaded with humor, will likely enjoy this series. But would I watch a second season? Honestly, no. I thought the story would be more impactful, with the robot truly rebelling because its name is Murderbot. Instead, it's a story that aims to normalize a more inclusive vision of the future, using the robot's pragmatic attitude toward "human complications" and employing humor as an analgesic for those who might not share these ideologies.
Para cualquiera que le gusten las óperas espaciales, llenas de contenido inclusivo, cargada de humor, podrá disfrutar esta serie, pero ¿yo vería la segunda temporada? La verdad que no, pense que la historia seria algo mas fuerte donde el robot se revela de verdad porque su nombre es Murderbot, pero es una historia que pretende normalizar una visión del futuro más inclusiva con la actitud pragmática del robot hacia las "complicaciones humanas", tratando que el humor sea el analgesico para los que no comparten esta ideologías.
