When I see a good movie or series, I usually investigate if it is based on a book, it is very common that the best sellers of the moment or of all times are taken to the big screen. This happened to me with the saga of movies based on the books of Jack Reacher, a character created by the writer Lee Child, from which came the adaptations of his books One Shot and Never Go Back, movies with the same names.

REACHER | La serie que se basó fielmente al libro Killing Floor

Cuando veo una buena película o serie, suelo investigar si está basada en algún libro, es algo muy común que se lleve a la gran pantalla los Best seller del momento o de todos los tiempos. Esto me ocurrió con la saga de películas basadas en los libros de Jack Reacher un personaje creado por el escritor Lee Child de las cuales surgieron las adaptaciones de sus libros One Shot y Never Go Back, película que llevan los mismos nombres.

By the time I learned of the existence of the books, a total of 18 had been published by Child, of which the first movie was based on the ninth book and the second movie on the eighteenth, however, updating me for the development of this publication, I have learned that to date 17 more books have been published, here I leave the list in case you are interested.

Para el momento que supe de la existencia de los libros, habían sido publicados por Child un total de 18, de los cuales la primera película se basó en el noveno libro y las segunda película en el décimo octavo, sin embargo, actualizando me para el desarrollo de esta publicación, me he enterado que hasta la fecha se han publicado 17 libros mas, acá les dejo la lista por si les interesa.

I had the opportunity to read part of the first book Killing Floor as part of a goal to read the whole saga, I'm a fan of stories related to investigation, cops and espionage, so this story is perfect for me. Although the Jack Reacher books can be read in any order it seemed appropriate to start with the first one and to my surprise in 2022 the series aired on Amazon prime based on this first book.

Tuve la oportunidad de leer parte del Primer libro Killing Floor como parte de una meta de leer toda la saga, soy fan de las historias relacionadas a la investigación, policías y espionaje, así que está historia es perfecta para mí. Aunque los libros sobre Jack Reacher se pueden leer en cualquier orden me parecía apropiado empezar por el primero y para mí sorpresa en 2022 salió al aire la serie en Amazon prime basada en este primer libro.

A different character

Something very interesting about the character represented by Tom Cruise was the appearance, because the one described in the books is a man of great stature and blond, the opposite of Cruise, this clearly denotes that his selection was made due to the great moment he was living thanks to his mission impossible movies, and he did it very well in my opinion in the Reacher movies. For me it was not a surprise the physical appearance of the character in the series, I knew that Reacher was the opposite of Cruise's phenotype.

Un personaje diferente

Algo muy interesante sobre el personaje representado por Tom Cruise fue la apariencia, porque el descrito en los libros es un hombre de gran estatura y rubio, todo lo contrario a Cruise, esto denota claramente que su selección fue hecha debido al gran momento que vivía gracias a sus películas de misión imposible, y vaya que lo hizo muy bien a mi parecer en las de Reacher. Para mí no fue una sorpresa la aparecían física del personaje de la serie, sabía que Reacher era todo lo contrario al fenotipo de Cruise.

A ruthless and calculating man.

The series is super faithful to the book, I liked that, Reacher is effectively a former Marine wandering from town to town, from city to city across the United States solving cases that in the view of local authorities are normal crimes, but most have a background. One of his main characteristics is that he approaches everything with violence, he does not mind killing the bad guys, his maxim is that they deserve no mercy, because they do not give mercy to their victims.

Un hombre despiadado y calculador

La serie es súper fiel al libro, eso me agradó, Reacher efectivamente es un ex Marine errante que va de pueblo en pueblo, de ciudad en ciudad por los estados unidos solucionando casos que a la vista de las autoridades locales son crímenes normales, pero que la mayoría tienen un trasfondo. Una de sus principales características es que todo lo aborda con violencia, no le pesa matar a los malos, su máxima es que no merecen piedad, porque ellos no la dan a sus víctimas.

Cruise's films instead present us with a more observant, intelligent man who goes to the details to solve the case, of course he is capable of beating anyone, but he gives the impression that it is not his first resort, but that he can be ruthless when required, that he is very well trained for any situation.

Las películas de Cruise nos presentan en cambio un hombre más observador, inteligente que va a los detalles para resolver el caso, claro que es capaz de vencer a golpes a quien sea, pero da la impresión que no es su primer recurso, pero que puede ser despiadado cuando se requiere, que está muy bien entrenado para cualquier situación.

Childhood details

I liked that the adaptation to the series includes some details of Reacher's childhood, during several flashbacks that he suffers while the events unfold, come to him moments of his youth with his brother Joe in Japan living in what looks like a U.S. military base, where they are highlighted his father.

Me gustó que la adaptación a la serie incluye algunos detalles de la infancia de Reacher, durante varios flash back que sufre mientras se desarrollan los hechos, vienen a él momentos de su juventud junto a su hermano Joe en Japón viviendo en lo que parecen una base militar norteamericana, dónde se encuentran destacado su padre.

En ese lugar tiene varios enfrentamientos con otros jóvenes abusadores, uno de ellos el hijo de un general, al cual golpea y le cuesta la carrera militar a su padre, por no querer disculpase, la razón, es que lo había hecho en defensa de un niño con down, y no creía justo tener que disculparse ante alguien malo solo por ser el hijo de alguien influyente.

Venezuela present in history

It is interesting that the writer Lee Child used this country as part of his story, which fits perfectly in these times with all that this country has lived being world news. For the TV series it is perfect that its story contains Venezuela, its launch year was in 2022, after two decades of much internal conflict, this country generated many news of world geopolitics involving its conflictive relationship with the United States, which accused its leaders of being dictators and corrupt.

Es interesante que el escritor Lee Child utilizara este pais como parte de su historia, lo cual encaja perfectamente en estos tiempo con todo lo que este pais a vivido siendo noticia mundial. Para la serie de television es perfecto que su historia contenga a Venezuela, su año de lanzamiento fue en 2022, tras dos décadas de mucho conflicto interno, este pais genero muchas noticias de geopolítica mundial que involucra su relación conflictiva con los Estados Unidos, nacían que acusa a sus mandatarios de dictadores y corruptos.

In the Reacher series, someone in Venezuela is an associate of a powerful family in the United States that uses a small town in Georgia as a base of operations to print counterfeit money and launder money for the South American nation. A sea blockade prevents this family from keeping sending money to Venezuela, affecting the relationship between the two, resulting in the death of the people involved.

En la serie Reacher, alguien en Venezuela es socio de una familia poderosa en los estados unidos que utiliza un pequeño pueblo en Georgia como base de operaciones para imprimir dinero falso y lavar dinero para la nación suramericana. Un bloqueo marítimo impide a esta familia seguir enviando dinero a Venezuela, afectando la relación entre ambos, trayendo como consecuencia que personas involucradas mueran.

The interesting thing is that the novel Killing Floor was published in 1997, where the political reality was different in this country, there were conflicts but nothing similar to those currently experienced, it was also a time of great political turmoil, with several coup attempts, economic challenges and even allegations of links with guerrillas and drug trafficking, which shows that this nation has always been in the eye of the hurricane.

Lo interesante del caso es que la novela Killing Floor fue publicada en 1997, donde la realidad política era otra en este pais, si había conflictos pero nada parecidos a los que actualmente se viven, también era una época de gran rebullicio politico, con varios intentos de golpe de estado, desafíos económicos e incluso señalamientos de vínculos con guerrillas y narcotráfico, lo que muestra que esta nación siempre a estado en el ojo del huracán.

As for the acting of its characters, the series doesn't offer any well-known face, nor a character that stands out as in the case of the movies, at first this may generate a little conflict for the audience that doesn't know the books not to see someone like Tom Cruise, but then they understand why a giant of 6.5 ft goes around a town kicking ass, the figure of someone powerful and invincible is not exactly that of a small man.

En cuanto a la actuación de sus personajes, la serie no ofrece ninguna cara muy conocida, tampoco un personaje que destaque como en el caso de las películas, en un principio puede generar esto un poco de conflicto para la audiencia que no conozca los libros al no ver a alguien parecido a Tom Cruise, pero luego entienden porque un gigante de 2 metros va por un pueblo pateando traseros, la figura de alguien poderoso e invencible no precisamente es la de un hombre pequeño.

I liked very much the attachment to the story that the series has with the book, but at the end of the episodes it is a little saturated to see that it doesn't come to a close, it gives the impression that the story is being extended, but it is not so. Another detail that stands out is the difference of characters, in Cruise's movies, Reacher is represented as an experienced man who has lived many things, who thinks everything very well, in the series he is more impulsive, it is a great detail from the chronological point of view.

Me gusto mucho el apego a la historia que la serie tiene con el libro, pero al final de los episodios satura un poco ver que no llega a un cierre, da la impresión que se estuviera alargando la historia, pero no es así. Otro detalle que resalta es la diferencia de personajes, en las películas de Cruise, se representa a Reacher como un hombre experimentado que ha vivido muchas cosas, que todo lo piensa muy bien, en la serie es mas impulsivo, es un gran detalle desde el punto de vista cronológico.
