Review - The Sheep Detective and its ingenious premise

I was quite surprised by this movie. We decided to watch it as a family, thinking it would be something geared toward younger kids, but it ended up being genuinely entertaining for both the adults and the children. Even though it uses a premise that seems childish, I promise you it’s worth watching, even if it doesn't look like it at first glance.

I’ll admit, I’m not usually a fan of movies where animals talk and take on human roles, but I understand why they use this device and know it has its audience. My youngest daughter was the one who invited me to watch it, and I thought it would be a nice opportunity to spend time together. It turned out to be a total surprise. What started with the premise of a shepherd who loves his flock and reads them crime novels to put them to sleep transformed into a detective story about solving a murder.

Hugh Jackman plays George Hardy, a lonely man living in a camper surrounded by his sheep. Every night, he reads them a crime novel, and the surprise is that his sheep actually understand him and love these kinds of stories. One morning, George turns up dead, and due to the local police's incompetence, the sheep decide to take charge. They use what they’ve learned from the books to solve their master's murder.

What’s interesting about the movie is how well it uses the "detective game" trope, following the pattern that there must be a motive, a means, and an opportunity to understand and solve a crime. Everything begins to unravel once they realize George’s death was tied to a huge sum of money that was meant to be donated to a foundation rather than going to his heirs.

Even though it’s sheep leading the investigation, I felt like I was watching something akin to Knives Out. It didn’t feel overly childish, nor did it have that "silly" tone that often characterizes stories with humanized animals. Honestly, for a moment, I forgot I was watching a movie about sheep because we were so focused on figuring out who the killer was—which, to me, is a great sign that the film does its job well.
