[Movie] Right Moana, Wrong Maui - My Take on Moana Live-Action

I’m really not a fan of live-action adaptations. Honestly, none of them have worked for me so far. They might look visually impressive, but retelling a story that already worked perfectly in animated form just feels redundant to me. I know these films have a huge fanbase, and I get the appeal—it’s similar to video game remakes. Still, they always seem to struggle with seamlessly blending reality and CGI. Even though I felt the exact same way about Moana, I did appreciate the subtle tweaks, especially the way they highlighted the authentic Polynesian culture.

At this point, I doubt there's anyone left who doesn't know what this story is about. It follows the exact same narrative beats as the original animated feature: Maui steals the heart of Te Fiti, turning her into Te Kā, and Moana is chosen by the ocean to convince Maui to return it and save their islands from the encroaching darkness. It is literally the same story. So, what actually changed? Not much, aside from a few sequence adjustments that heavily relied on CGI to convey flashbacks and fantasy elements, and perhaps some heavy lifting for Dwayne Johnson, who came off a bit too stiff to capture the animated Maui’s natural charisma.

And that brings me to one of my biggest gripes with the film. Dwayne Johnson just wasn't the right fit for Maui. He lacked the necessary charm to pull off that specific blend of humor and epic swagger the character demands. Who would’ve been my pick for the role? Jason Momoa instantly came to mind. He naturally projects that effortless arrogance that defines Maui, plus he already has extensive experience balancing comedy and fantasy action—a background that would have served this character so much better.

On the other hand, Catherine Lagaʻaia was a solid choice for Moana. Her Samoan heritage gave her an undeniable authenticity that fit the part wonderfully. My favorite scene from the original animated film is when Moana discovers the ancient canoes, beats the drum, and witnesses the vision of her ancestors set to Samoan music. That sequence was executed brilliantly here—it genuinely felt grounded and authentic. I also have to give credit where it’s due regarding the visual effects for Te Kā and Te Fiti: the team absolutely crushed it. They took creative liberties compared to the animated original, and the result was visually superior.
