The Oil Game Just Got Deadlier - Landman Season 2 First Impressions

I’ve just started season two of Landman, and so far, I’m pretty hooked. I really enjoyed the first season; even though it’s a drama fueled by the kind of conflicts we’ve seen before, the setting is what makes it stand out. I love that it revolves around the oil industry and the massive financial interests tied to it. Plus, the show does a great job critiquing how superficial people in that world can be. For me, it’s an entertaining formula that’s definitely worth a watch.

Fair warning: if you haven’t seen the first season yet, you might want to stop reading here. I’m going to drop a small spoiler that’s necessary to discuss how season two kicks off.
Monty (Jon Hamm), the owner of the company, passes away, but not before promoting Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) to President. Now, everything rests on Tommy’s shoulders and Monty’s widow, Cami (Demi Moore), who has been a fairly passive character until now.

This season, Cami has to step into the spotlight and take control, proving she has what it takes to swim with the sharks in the oil business—something her husband excelled at. The first episode has a great hook; we see Cami giving her first speech at a luncheon for partners, bankers, and investors, where she has to make a killer first impression.

There’s still a lot of ground to cover, but so far, the continuity from the first season feels solid. I’m still waiting for Andy Garcia’s character to resurface to see how he fits into the main plot. Remember, he was introduced as the cartel boss who saved Tommy’s life right when he was about to be killed. His arrival will surely bring more conflict and drama, but at the end of the day, that just means more entertainment.
