The Thursday Murder Club - A fine stab at cozy crime [ENG/SPA]

I actually started watching this movie completely by chance. I was visiting my dad and he had it on. The first thing that grabbed my attention was hearing English with a British accent. My dad seemed totally charmed by the movie; he lived for eight years in Blackpool, a small town near London, so he’s into any kind of British content. Thanks to my dad, I picked up some of his English slang, and I loved being able to hear those phrases in this film.

Comencé a ver está película de casualidad, fui a visitar a mi padre y el la estaba viendo. Lo primero que llamo mi atención fue escuchar inglés con acento británico, mi padre se veía encantado con la película, el vivió 8 años en Blackpool un pequeño pueblo cerca de Londres, así que todo contenido británico le atrae. Gracias a mi padre aprendí algunos modismos de su inglés y me encantó poder escucharlos en esta película.

I became even more interested when I saw the amazing cast, plus the plot is a mystery and crime story—something the British, in my opinion, know how to pull off really well. The movie premiered on August 28th and is directed by Chris Columbus, who’s known for Home Alone and Harry Potter. It's an adaptation of Richard Osman’s novel and has all the makings of a cozy mystery, but despite having a great cast and being based on a solid book, I think it could have been better

Me termine de interesar al ver su gran elenco, sumado a que su trama es de misterios y crímenes, algo que los británicos, a mi juicio, saben combinar muy bien. Está película se estreno el 28 de agosto y es dirigida por Chris Columbus, conocido por Solo en Casa y Harry Potter. La película es una adaptación de la novela de Richard Osman y tiene la perfecta apariencia de un cozy mystery, pero a pesar de tener un gran elenco y una buena base en la historia de un gran libro, creo que pudo ser mejor.

The story takes place at a luxurious retirement community called Cooper's Chase in Fairhaven, England. Four retirees spend some of their time solving cold cases the police couldn't crack—they just do it for fun. This activity stops being just for laughs when they face a real challenge after a local real estate dispute gets complicated by the death of one of the people involved.

Su trama se desarrolla en una residencia lujosa para retirados llamada Cooper's Chase en Fairhaven, Inglaterra. Cuatro jubilados dedican parte de su tiempo a resolver crímenes que la policía no pudo resolver, lo hacen solo por entretenimiento. Esta actividad deja de ser por diversión cuando enfrentan un verdadero reto cuando un conflicto inmobiliario se ve manchado con la muerte de uno de los involucrados.

Ian Ventham (David Tennant), one of the owners, plans to tear down the retirement home to build luxury apartments. Tony Curran (Geoff Bell), a co-owner, opposes the sale and is found brutally murdered. This is where the club springs into action, starting their investigation to get to the bottom of the whole conflict and find the person responsible for the crime.

Ian Ventham (David Tennant) uno de los propietarios planea derribar la residencia para construir apartamentos de lujo. Tony Curran (Geoff Bell) copropietario se opone a la venta, y es encontrado brutalmente asesinado. Es aquí donde el club entra en acción, inicia su investigación para llegar el fondo de todo este conflicto y encontrar al responsable de este crímen.

The movie’s biggest selling point is its protagonists, especially the character of Elizabeth Best, played by the experienced Helen Mirren. She’s the group’s leader, she keeps secrets, and she’s a former MI6 agent. Another character is Ron Ritchie, played by Pierce Brosnan, who delivers another energetic and charismatic performance, this time as a retired union activist. Ben Kingsley is Ibrahim Arif, a retired psychiatrist who brings logic with psychological nuance to the cases, but he’s also very empathetic. Finally, there’s Joyce Meadowcroft, played by Celia Imrie, the team’s newest member—an eccentric retired nurse and widow who treats mystery as a hobby and loves baking cakes

El mayor atractivo de esta película son sus protagonistas, el personaje de Elizabeth Best interpretado por la experimentada Helen Mirren. Es la líder del grupo, guarda secretos, fue agente del MI6. Otro personaje es Ron Ritchie interpretado por Pierce Brosnan, con otro papel enérgico y carismático, aca es un ex-activista sindical retirado. Ben Kingsley es Ibrahim Arif, un psiquiatra retirado, aporta lógica con matices psicológicos a los casos. pero a su vez es muy empático. Por último Joyce Meadowcroft por Celia Imrie, ella es la nueva del equipo, una enfermera jubilada y viuda, excéntrica, que usa el misterio como hobby y le encanta hornear pasteles.

The chemistry among these four characters is reason enough to recommend seeing this movie. Mirren, in particular, turns the typical cliché of the former agent into something fun and dynamic. This gives the film a charming tone; the scenes feel a little cozy, and there's always a light, joking vibe, getting serious only when it needs to. I especially liked that the movie approaches older characters without being condescending or overly sentimental.

La química entre estos cuatro personajes es una razón suficiente para recomendar ver está película. Mirren en particular convierte el típico papel cliché del ex agente en algo divertido y dinámico. Esto le da un tono encantador a la película, las escenas se sienten un tanto acogedoras, y siempre hay un tono jocoso ligero, y se pone serio cuando tiene que serlo. Me gustó especialmente que la película aborda a los personajes mayores sin condescendencia ni sentimentalismo.

I think the only negative point is the script. It works because it’s based on the book, which is an advantage, but it’s weak on the actual mystery. It feels really superficial; I think it needed more depth and complexity. The cast did all the heavy lifting, but that doesn’t stop the plot from being predictable, plus they stretch it out too much just to make it two hours long.

Creo que el único punto negativo es el guión, es funcional porque tiene un basamento en el libro, esa es una ventaja, pero es débil en cuanto al misterio, se siente muy superficial, creo que le falta profundidad, que hubiera sido más complejo. El reparto hizo todo el trabajo pesado, pero eso no evita que la trama sea previsible, además lo alargan mucho para que dure dos horas.

It’s almost a sure bet that we'll get a second movie. There’s plenty of material to make one, as the book series has been very successful—they’ve got four published books with a fifth on the way. So, it definitely has the potential to become a successful and popular franchise, but I sincerely hope that future installments will feature better and more challenging cases.

Lo más seguro que tengamos una segunda película, material hay de sobra para hacerla, la serie de libros ha sido muy exitosa, van cuatro libros publicados con una quinta en camino, asi que tiene todo el potencial de convertirse en una franquicia exitosa y popular, pero espero sinceramente que las futuras entregas presenten casos "mejores y más desafiantes.
