I had no idea The Invite was part of a global phenomenon, so to speak. I decided to check it out after seeing the trailer—the stacked cast, premise, and familiar faces immediately sold me on it. Barely two minutes in, I caught a line in the opening credits: Based on Sentimental. Turns out it's a remake of a 2020 Spanish film that has already spawned multiple international versions, with The Invite being the latest entry.
The plot is simple on the surface, but it carries a surprisingly deep message. At the center of it all are Angela (Olivia Wilde) and Joe (Seth Rogen), a couple whose marriage has settled into a routine, creating a growing physical and emotional rift. Angela invites their neighbors, Pina (Penélope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton), over for dinner, and things get wildly intense and provocative after the guests extend an unexpected proposal. It triggers a series of excruciatingly awkward situations driven by Angela and Joe’s fractured dynamic—which their neighbors watch in utter shock, all too aware of how dysfunctional the couple has become under the weight of built-up issues.
I’m by no means an expert when it comes to technical filmmaking, but I could definitely tell the visual style feels distinct here. The transitions are particularly striking. Since the entire movie takes place in a single confined location, keeping things visually engaging is no small feat, and I think the director did a fantastic job with character framing and the seamless transitions from one scene to the next.
As for the script and narrative tone, the comedy aspect is interesting, though personally, I found it a bit hard to connect with. Honestly, it’s not really my cup of tea; I’d describe it as cringe comedy, and for some viewers, the constant awkward tension might prove frustrating enough to ruin the movie for them. That said, it’s completely understandable why it's written this way—watching a struggling couple unravel to the point where all filters are lost is supposed to feel uncomfortable.
And that’s precisely why it works—it touches on real-life dynamics that anyone in a long-term relationship can relate to. Resentment, anger, making assumptions—these things heavily impact couple life, so you might find yourself relating to it pretty quickly. I think that’s the foundation of its success and why it has been adapted and remade in so many countries: relationship troubles are a universal theme. Olivia Wilde really hit the mark with this one, redeeming herself after the stumbles of her recent films.
In conclusion, it's a good movie. The performances from its four leads are excellent, the camerawork is solid, and while the script can feel exhausting and draining, that’s done on purpose. The main message really landed with me: it clearly communicates that until you resolve individual conflict, it’s hard to resolve conflict in a relationship.

La versión española es interesante, pero si hay una gran diferencia en la forma en que fue grabada, se nota que la española tiene como base una obra de teatro.

I really enjoyed how the mystery slowly unfolded. The suspense kept me curious about what was actually happening, and the uneasy atmosphere made every reveal feel more interesting. It kept me guessing.

I like your view about this movie. I've heard this movie is good and that Wilde's performance was phenomenal considering that she was also the director. I will be seeing this movie and hopeful write about it. Movies done in confined space sometimes turn out to be thought-provoking kind of movie. I like them.
You might like this movie; the story has several versions in different countries, each with its own unique touch. I liked this one because of the camera work.
