"Buscando a Bobby Fischer" (1993) es una de esas cintas que, pese a su temática aparentemente de nicho, logra conectar con algo universal, la lucha entre la pureza y la presión, entre el talento natural y la obsesión. Esta es una película bellamente humana, con un corazón enorme y una sensibilidad poco común, no es sobre jugadas, sino sobre personas, y por eso funciona incluso si no sabes mover un peón.

Based on a true story (the autobiographical book by Fred Waitzkin, the prodigy's father), it tells the story of Josh, a seven-year-old boy who discovers chess by chance in the bustling Washington Square Park. In a natural and almost intuitive way, he demonstrates an extraordinary gift for the game. His father, both excited and worried, seeks to channel that talent with the help of a strict teacher, Ben Kingsley (as Bruce), while Josh tries not to lose the joy and love for the game he learned from the street players.

Its weakness is its adherence to certain classic Hollywood family film structures: the "bad" rival, the rigid teacher shaped by his own failures. These are noticeable tropes, but the script executes them with such honesty and warmth that, in my opinion, they are forgivable.

The cast is sublime. Max Pomeranc (Josh) is natural and moving, managing to convey the burden of his gift without seeming affected. Joe Mantegna as the father is the soul of the film; his struggle between ambition and paternal love is full of nuance. Ben Kingsley perfectly embodies rigidity and cold calculation, while Laurence Fishburne, as the street player Vinnie, adds charisma and an earthy wisdom that balances the story. The symphony among all of them is noticeable.

It's not his most memorable work, but it's perfect for the film's tone.

It's also a subtle commentary on the "American Dream" and the shadow of figures like Bobby Fischer, whose genius and subsequent disappearance loom like a ghost over all the characters.

It is not a film for chess purists seeking tactical depth (the games are shown in an accessible way). Sometimes I'm a sentimentalist with a weakness for stories about innocence and talent. If you want a movie that makes you feel, think, and perhaps get a lump in your throat, this is a safe bet, ideal for family viewing and generating conversation.
