Training Day. More than just a police thrille [Eng-Esp]

More often than not, I prefer revisiting a familiar film over facing some of the more recent misguided offerings.

En no pocas ocasiones prefiero revisitar una película conocida, que enfrentarme a alguna desatinada propuesta más reciente.

It was Training Day turn, that 2001 film starring Denzel Washington (for which he won the Oscar) and Ethan Hawke. I have always kept it on my list of favorites because I am interested in stories about the rawest side of cities, of police officers... This movie is one of those that exceeds many expectations: an intense and exhausting journey that makes you question everything alongside the protagonist.

Le tocó el turno a Día de Entrenamiento, esa película del 2001 que protagonizan Denzel Washington (y con la que ganó el Oscar) y Ethan Hawke, siempre la he tenido en mi lista de preferidas, porque me interesan esas historias sobre el lado más crudo de las ciudades, los policías... Esta película es de las que supera muchas expectativas: un viaje intenso y agotador que te hace cuestionar todo junto al protagonista.

The premise is powerful: we follow Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke), an idealistic rookie cop, during his probation day to join the narcotics unit. His guide is Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington), a veteran detective with radical methods who rules the streets with a mix of respect, fear, and audacity. What seems like a routine training day becomes a descent into a world where the written rules don't apply and morality is tested at every turn.

La premisa es potente: seguimos a Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke), un policía novato e idealista, durante su día de prueba para unirse a la unidad de narcóticos, su asesor es Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington), un detective veterano con métodos radicales que gobierna las calles con una mezcla de respeto, miedo y audacia, lo que parecería ser un día rutinario de entrenamiento se convertirá en un descenso a un mundo donde las reglas escritas no aplican y la moral se pone a prueba a cada instante.

The screenplay is the film's great engine. Through the buildup of tension and the exploration of Alonzo's character, it immerses you in his world, making you a participant in the disorientation and doubt that Jake feels. It's a step in his psychological game where you don't know if Alonzo is a genius, a criminal, or both. The weakness, and this is something I clashed with, comes in the final climax. After such a psychological and character-driven development, it opts for a more conventional action sequence (chases, shootouts) that, while exciting, feels a bit like a forced shift in tone. Although it doesn't ruin the experience, it somewhat clashes with the earlier mastery.

El guión es el gran motor de la película, mediante la construcción de tensión y la exploración del carácter de Alonzo, este te sumerge en su mundo, haciéndote partícipe de la desorientación y la duda que siente Jake, es un escalón en su juego psicológico donde no sabes si Alonzo es un genio, un criminal o las dos cosas. La debilidad, y es algo con lo que choqué, llega en el clímax final, después de un desarrollo tan psicológico y basado en personajes, se opta por una secuencia de acción más convencional (persecuciones, tiroteos) que, aunque emocionante, se siente un poco como un cambio de tono forzado, aunque no arruina la experiencia, desentona un poco con la maestría anterior.

As for the performances, Denzel Washington was excellent. He creates a magnetic, unpredictable, and utterly convincing character. He has a smile that can imply complicity or a threat, and a confidence that makes you doubt your own judgment; he justifies the award he received. Ethan Hawke is the opposite pole: his face of disbelief, fear, and moral conflict is the lens through which the story is experienced. The chemistry between them is a constantly tense and compelling tightrope.

En cuanto a las actuaciones, Denzel Washington estuvo excelente, crea un personaje magnético, impredecible y muy convincente, tiene una sonrisa que puede ser de complicidad o una amenaza, y una seguridad que te hace dudar de tu propio juicio; justifica el premio que recibió. Ethan Hawke es como el polo opuesto: su cara de incredulidad, miedo y conflicto moral es un camino por el que se vive la historia. La química entre ellos es una cuerda floja constantemente tensa, y atrayente.

The film captures the suffocating and vibrant atmosphere of different Los Angeles neighborhoods. Antoine Fuqua direction is solid, with a use of space that accentuates the feeling of being in hostile territory. Scenes like the entry into "The Jungle" are visually powerful and loaded with meaning. The soundtrack, heavily leaning on hip-hop, amplifies the street energy and the rawness of the environment. It's a deep exploration of corruption, practical morality, and perverted codes of honor. It raises uncomfortable questions, shows you the abyss, and leaves you reflecting.

La película captura la atmósfera asfixiante y vibrante de distintos barrios de Los Ángeles, la dirección de Antoine Fuqua es sólida, con un uso de los espacios que acentúa la sensación de estar en territorio hostil, escenas como la entrada a "La Jungla" son visualmente poderosas y cargadas de significado, el soundtrack, con un peso importante del hip-hop, amplifica la energía callejera y la crudeza del entorno. Es una exploración profunda de la corrupción, la moral práctica y los códigos de honor pervertidos, plantea interrogantes incómodas, te muestra el abismo y te deja reflexionando.

Those who enjoy intense police dramas with deep characterization and top-tier acting will find this film an excellent choice. Likewise, if you like stories of ambiguous morality and complex characters, it's a powerful cinematic experience, the kind that leaves your head spinning.

Quienes disfruten de dramas policiales intensos, con caracterización profunda y actuaciones de alto nivel, encontrarán en esta entrega una excelente opción, igualmente, si les agradan las historias de moralidad ambigua y personajes complejos, es una experiencia cinematográfica poderosa, de las que te dejan con la cabeza dando vueltas.
