The movie, Half of a Yellow Sun which the great Biyi Bandele directed provides a powerful depiction of Nigeria and the events that took place in the difficult 1960s. The movie explores the issues of affection, conflict, identity, as well as survival with the help of its gripping story and talented cast of characters, making a lasting impression on audiences both in Nigeria and outside Nigeria.

The movie's representation of the historical Biafran War, a terrible period in the history of Nigeria is among its many remarkable features. In addition to teaching viewers about an important historical event, the movie encourages introspection on the lasting effects of colonialism as well as how it affected the Nigerian culture. This was greatly achieved as they brought the whole era back to us on screen.

Half of a Yellow Sun provided a necessary exposure to the complex nature of the Nigerian culture and past for me as an individual. My upbringing away from Nigeria affected how much I knew about the history of Nigeria, especially the historic Biafran War. My interest was aroused and I was motivated to study deeper into Nigeria's past after seeing the movie, which helped me understand the issue better.

In addition, as a Nigerian, the way the movie talked about the issue of identity was very interesting to me. It explores the interrelationships of ethnic background, class, and ethnicity with characters such as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Onyeka Onwenu, and Genevieve Nnaji. As a person who has had identity issues before, this movie was personal to me and got me thinking of the different possibilities regardless of one's class or race, seeing where we are today as a Nation.

Apart from having an impact on me as an individual, the movie also sparked deeper discussions among Nigerians on the history of the country. As the movie was released, people both in Nigeria and Nigerians in the diaspora started engaging in conversations about the Biafra war, mostly on when the war started, how it started and the effects it now has on Nigerians. Half of a Yellow Sun has helped to propagate this discussion through screenings, discussions in panels and even educational programmes, promoting a better understanding of the history of Nigeria.

Furthermore, the high professional standard of the movie reintroduced Nigeria to the spotlight, showcasing their talent and ability to create blockbuster movies from real-life events, preserving the story and context. The movie has opened the door of opportunities for many other talented filmmakers as it has shown the world that there are untapped and intriguing stories from Nigeria and Africa at large to be seen.

In a nutshell, Half of a Yellow Sun is not just a movie, it goes on to show how storytelling can be used as a source of inspiration education and even unity. It has had a great impact on me and the society at large, shedding light on the preconceptions, and educating the public on the facts of that part of Nigerian history using the themes of love, conflict, and perseverance.
