Several weeks ago I started to watch the first season of this series, mainly due to the presence of 2 extremely popular actresses and 1 extremely popular actor I will mention below.

The first season surprised me because the type of performance they provided is very different from what I was expecting from them. All of them got popular mostly due to their comedic roles, and even though this series has some fun moments, it is mostly about drama coupled with excessive yelling in my opinion.

Since I was already invested in the series, I decided to continue watching it to see what happened as the result of the big drama from season 1. Nevertheless, and without actually knowing if a third season is on the way, I really don't think I will continue to watch this show. I have seen sufficient drama and yelling for my liking but at least this second season has less yelling.

What was the series about?

The series is about the personal lives and dramas of the people working in the popular news show called The Morning Show. The story revolves around the main faces of the show, the people presenting the news to the viewers, but other people such as assistants, producers, and even the CEO also take part in the plot.

In the first season, a major drama was revealed related to the "metoo" movement that completely changes the dynamic of this show, and the story goes to the extreme of even including the death of a character. The drama can get really intense and this is the reason for all the yelling.

This season continued with the drama that was revealed in the first season, and at the beginning of it, the series advanced quite rapidly even making me believe we would eventually go back in time to explore previous events more profoundly but nope, the series really advances rapidly in time at the beginning of this season and never goes back. It was a little off-putting, to be honest.

During this season we will see the aftermath of the reputational earthquake some characters go through, and how as time goes on, some relationships have to be reconstructed simply because it is convenient for the people involved. The show has to go on, even if it can chew people and then spit them out all destroyed.

Some of the personal dramas of some characters will get intertwined with the main plot, and it seems like some of the characters simply cannot get a break.

The series provides many examples of how people's values get relegated in favor of their economic interests and how they attempt to take advantage of any type of situation. However, there are also examples of characters proving they can act with integrity despite some pressure trying to convince them otherwise.

This show, on the other hand, explores a difficult topic and makes a decent job trying to portray the 2 points of view of many "metoo" cases, including the possible exaggeration existing in many of these cases, while at the same time, providing a justification for the existence of this exaggeration.

The time where these events take place is during the 2020 year, and they integrated some world events very nicely into the series such as the covid pandemic, as well as the American presidential election. This made the series feel even more authentic and realistic.

Main names associated with the series

Mimi Leder has been the main director of the show for the 2 seasons so far, and her experience is quite extensive having participated in more than 40 different productions since her career began in the 80s. Some of the shows where she worked as a director in the past decade are Luck, Smash, and Full Circle.

The main writer of the show was Jay Carson, and it might be surprising but this was the first time this person worked as a series writer in the entertainment industry. His only previous writing job was with a film from 2018 called The Front Runner.

Kerry Ehrin is the most experienced writer involved in the series with around 24 different productions so far in her career. As is the case with the main director, she also specializes in series, some of which are Bionic Woman, Parenthood, and Boston Public.

Ali Vingiano, on the other hand, has the peculiarity of having experience writing shorts, but not regular-length productions. Not many people watch shorts but having seen a lot of them in some Youtube channels such as Omeleto, DUST, and many others, I can confirm some shorts are certainly worth watching. Some of the shorts written by her are Three Night Stand, When I Saw Him Again, and Unaware.

Jennifer Aniston is probably the most popular person involved in this series. An actress we all know thanks to her comedic skills, and who is constantly participating in new productions. Some of the best productions of her career are Friends obviously, but also We are the Millers, Cake, and The Good Girl.

Reese Witherspoon is another well-known actress. I saw her as a good woman to play innocent characters, but this changed after watching this series because her character is an extremely neurotic and intense reporter who loves to scream a lot. Some of the most popular productions of her career are Legally Blonde, Wild, and Election.

Algunos de los cortos escritos por ella son Three Night Stand, When I Saw Him Again y Unaware.

Steve Carell plays a secondary character throughout the show and I thought he was going to be more important. In the second season, he even has less screen time than in the first one. Like the previous 2 cast members, Carell is also an actor who most people probably know, my favorite productions with him are The Big Short, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Evan Almighty, although Bruce Almighty is my favorite one of those 2 films.

Billy Crudup plays one of the bosses of the network hosting The Morning Show. His character tends to smile a lot probably because he has a different way of looking at things and he understands the importance of trying to have fun while taking life seriously at the same time. We can find this actor in the Gypsy series, as well as in Alien: Covenant, and in The Stanford Prison Experiment.

How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the camera work?

The 3 main cast members played their roles correctly. I enjoyed Aniston and Witherspoon, performance more because they were much less neurotic compared to the first season, and their character generally felt much more grounded.

When it comes to the drama itself, and the way people handled it, I believe the writers did a good job in the way they developed this story. It felt like something that can easily happen in real life, and the only problem for me was the excessive yelling, which I consider to be overdone since the first season, although as mentioned in some paragraphs above, in this season the screams weren't as extreme.

Another thing the writers did well was the variety of the characters. We will see very diverse personalities and some of the clashes that can result when they are forced to deal with very stressful situations as part of their constant work routine.

It is easy to notice the show is a high-budget one, and in my opinion, it had the potential to become a true masterpiece of the drama genre, but in the end, I simply consider it an OK show, better than average but not a masterpiece.

Final thoughts

I had high expectations for this series, and there were some moments I really loved thanks to their intelligent use of comedy, or rather dramady, during some scenes. Having characters screaming can surely provide some opportunities for comedies, and even though there were a couple of scenes where this happened, I believe it would have been even better if they made more use of these possibilities.

As a drama, it is surely a series worth watching but it is far from being the best drama out there. Given the nature of the topic explored here, a "metoo" case, I would bet many people are interested in giving it a watch.

Thanks for reading!
