I don't watch many productions from Spain but usually, when I watch one they end up being very entertaining. Something similar happens when I watch Argentinian productions. There is a handful of comedies I have seen from that country and I consider them to be among the best comedies I have ever seen in my life.

When I was first reading about this film, I quickly realized this was a joined production between a couple of popular Spanish actors and a very popular Argentinian actor. I don't think I have ever watched a production that combines talent from Spain and Argentina and it was obvious to me that this film was worth watching thanks to that.

I was quite excited about it because the film belongs to the drama and the comedy genre, and it seemed that it could be a hilarious story to watch.

What was the story about?

The story is about the creation of a film. There is a very wealthy old man who wants to make something that could be part of his legacy. He wants his name to be remembered, so he decides to finance a film.

A handful of talented people are hired for this film, and this is when the real story begins. Just like The Morning Show series is about the backstage drama of people who work in news channels, this film is about the drama of people who create films. Particularly from the director and the 2 actors.

The film makes fun of the obsession of many artistic minds that can become very obstinate in their search for achieving perfection with their artistic creation.

This is particularly the case with the director of the fictional film played by Penelope Cruz. She can get extremely strict with the 2 main actors, even to the point of making them repeat the same phrase tons of times until they can reproduce it with the proper tone.

This can get very annoying for the 2 actors, and it becomes funny to see them pretending they aren't annoyed and trying to get along with the director.

We will also see how one of these creative minds prepares himself for his artistic performance, and the fun and weird private rituals and preparation they have with the goal of putting themselves in the proper mindset.

These backstage dynamics that most people are completely unaware of are what this film is all about, with a constant comedic touch to keep everything fun.

The contrast between these 2 actors, and I am talking about the fictional ones from the film, couldn't be bigger.

One of them loves everything related to luxury, and prestige, and is as demanding as he can be. He has gotten used to his huge success and the comfort it can provide to him. He also cares about social media, taking cool pictures, and things like that.

The other actor is much more humble, grounded, and realistic. He doesn't care about prizes, prestige, and not even fame. He only cares about doing a good job with his acting opportunities. He almost seems too pure to be true and is the total opposite of his colleagues.

There is a point though, where the film stops attempting to create new comedic scenes and begins to focus more on the drama that is for these people the obligation of having to work together.

The way the 2 actors manage to handle their situation and rivalry, is by suddenly beginning a sort of internal competition, where they both try to make a believable performance while having a normal conversation that doesn't belong to their rehearsal and messing with the mind of their colleagues by making them believe a personal lie.

What begins like an apparently friendly competition, eventually turns sour and dark.

The hypocrisy of some creative minds with the goal of not complicating their workplace is present since the beginning of the film. We constantly see new examples from the 3 main characters, where they internally decide to play gently in order to avoid a confrontation.

The film portrays these artistic minds as people very difficult to handle, stubborn, and most of all as very unconventional people.

The obstination we see in several scenes might appear to be exaggerated but when I think about it, I believe real-life artistic people might be like that after all. They put the art above everything else, and I think some of them might even be driven to crazy land due to their unconventional nature. The character played by Penelope Cruz for example, made me think she was on the road to crazy land on more than one occasion.

Pride and ego will ultimately be the concepts that trigger the most important event in the entire film and the one preceding a massive chaos that is destined to happen after the film ends. It doesn't have a cliffhanger type of ending, but it does leaves everything in place for one hell of a conflict.

Main participants, their performance and previous works.

Mariano Cohn and Gaston Duprat both worked as directors and writers for this film. They usually work together and have created many productions in recent times. Some of these are Nada, El Encargado and Horario Estelar.

Gaston's brother, Andres Duprat, worked as a writer and in the past he, along with his brother, created one of the best comedies I have seen in my life called My Masterpiece.

The story developed in this film was a good idea. Making a film about the backstage drama and conflicts that usually happens in films could be intriguing enough to convince many people to watch it. However, due to the excessive eccentric nature of some characters, and also due to several intense conflicts, the film could feel a heavier than what I would like.

What I mean by that is that some moments felt too dense, and the drama felt like if it was hard to overcome for the characters, which made it harder to introduce comedic scenes and relax the tension.

The well-known Penélope Cruz played Lola Cuevas, a very intense director willing to do anything if it helps her create her perfect movie. My favorite films with her are Vanilla Sky, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and Volver.

She was very good with her role as an eccentric director looking for innovative ways to make the 2 actors compatible with each other. I believe in some scenes she might have went to extreme to make her character unbelievable, but who knows, maybe there are directors like that in real life.

Antonio Banderas played Félix Rivero, he was the actor who loved to be admired by people, loved the fame and the prestige of it. He has participated in many productions overthe past few decades, with my favorite being The Skin I Live In.

He was extremely good at letting the viewer see the efforts and challenges his character goes through while rehearsing the different scenes he has to make with Oscar Martínez's character.

Oscar Martínez was the actor playing Iván Torres, the more humble character and less obsessed with the fame. I have previously seen this actor giving good performances in The Weasel's Tale, Wild Tales, and The Distinguished Citizen.

He gave a natural performance which made me even think he is just like his charcater while creating his real-life movies. His character felt like the least fictional of the 3, while Penelope's felt like the most fictional due to some of her extreme decisions and general obstination.

Final thoughts

The film was all right, it wasn't as funny as I was expecting it to be, but its 3 main charismatic cast members keep everything entertaining from beginning to end.

It surely explored an original setting which is all the previous work involved in the creation of a film and the way artistic people interact with each other, but I do believe it could have been more original in the way they included the comedic scene.

I think it would be better to approach this film as a good comedy-drama story because that's actually what it is, and not to put too much expectation on its funny side. The film attempts to be an example of real-life copying art within a fictional storyline, and the dramatic elements end up being more importance than the comedic ones.

Anteriormente he visto a este actor dando buenas actuaciones en The Weasel's Tale, Wild Tales y The Distinguished Citizen.

A mi me gusto bastante
