Last night I saw this low-budget mystery-horror film and I wasn't sure if it was going to be worth it based on the reviews I have read but I am glad I decided to give it a watch. Horror and mystery are genres I enjoy very much and when they are properly mixed with a good plot, the end result is an enjoyable experience for me.

The story takes place on an island where strange phenomena have been occurring such as tons of fish found lying dead on the shore. The main character is a man in his late 20s or early 30s, he is single and lives with his widowed dad who has started to display signs of dementia or something similar. This old man constantly shows eerie behaviors that are hard to explain. The first such case is also the first scene in the film.

Anoche vi esta película de terror y misterio de bajo presupuesto y no estaba seguro de si valdría la pena según las críticas que vi, pero me alegro de haber decidido verla. El terror y el misterio son géneros que disfruto mucho y cuando se combinan correctamente con una buena trama, el resultado final es una experiencia agradable para mí.

La historia tiene lugar en una isla donde se han producido fenómenos extraños, como toneladas de peces encontrados muertos en la orilla. El personaje principal es un hombre de entre 20 y 30 años, es soltero y vive con su padre viudo, que ha comenzado a mostrar signos de demencia o algo similar. Este anciano muestra constantemente comportamientos espeluznantes que son difíciles de explicar. El primero de estos casos es también la primera escena de la película.

Things begin to get more worrisome with the old man when he begins to get blackouts and lose time. It is as if he loses control over himself and begins to act like a mindless drone. There is a recurring thing when this happens to him, and it is that he always ends up going on his boat out to the sea. There is something out there, in the sea, that has somehow linked itself to him.

This is what the big mystery is all about in The Block Island Sound. For the people living in this place, it is very difficult to realize something weird is going on. It only affects one person who is also living a very isolated life, and when he goes to the sea he is completely alone, so it is impossible to know what is really going on in these trips.

Las cosas comienzan a ponerse más preocupantes con el anciano cuando comienza perder tiempo, es decir, hace cosas sin recordarlas. Es como si perdiera el control sobre sí mismo y comenzara a actuar como un dron sin sentido. Hay una cosa recurrente cuando esto le pasa, y es que siempre acaba saliendo en su barco al mar. Hay algo ahí fuera, en el mar, que de alguna manera se ha vinculado a él.

De esto se trata el gran misterio en The Block Island Sound. Para las personas que viven en este lugar, es muy difícil darse cuenta de que algo extraño está sucediendo. Solo afecta a una persona que además está viviendo una vida muy aislada, y cuando va al mar está completamente solo, por lo que es imposible saber qué está pasando realmente en estos viajes.

The third major character is a daughter of the old man, who is also in her 30s just like her brother. She doesn't live with them but is visiting along with her child, and she will be key in discovering what is actually going on. Is the weird behavior the result of dementia or is there something else? Rest assured, by the end of the film, you will know what is causing the strange things that are happening in this place. And even more than that, you will understand not only the 'what' but the 'why' as well.

If you enjoy the mystery genre this would be a fine movie to watch. Around the second act I was becoming disappointed but once I realized what was really going on, and the poetic way in which the nature of these strange events is revealed and confirmed, I concluded this was a fine mystery story. It doesn't have that many horror scenes, only a handful where a character is showed in a very creepy way but nothing that I consider to be real horror. All in all, I consider this a fine indie mystery flick and certainly worth the watch.

El tercer personaje principal es una hija del anciano, que también tiene unos 30 años al igual que su hermano. Ella no vive con ellos, pero está de visita junto con su hija, y será clave para descubrir lo que realmente está sucediendo. ¿El comportamiento extraño es el resultado de la demencia o hay algo más? Tenga la seguridad, al final de la película, sabrá qué está exactamente causando las cosas extrañas que están sucediendo en este lugar. E incluso más que eso, comprenderá no solo el "qué" sino también el "por qué".

Si te gusta el género de misterio, esta sería una buena película para ver. Alrededor del segundo acto me estaba decepcionando, pero una vez que me di cuenta de lo que realmente estaba sucediendo y de la forma poética en que se revela y confirma la naturaleza de estos extraños eventos, llegué a la conclusión de que se trataba de una buena historia de misterio. No tiene tantas escenas de terror, solo un puñado donde se muestra un personaje de una manera muy espeluznante, pero nada que yo considere horror real. Con todo, considero que esta es una buena película de misterio independiente y ciertamente vale la pena verla.

  • It became kind of bored in the second act, then it speed up and becomes good.
  • Not enough horror but it does have good suspense I would say.
  • Me aburrió un poco en el segundo acto, luego aceleró y se puso buena.
  • No hay suficiente horror, pero diría que tiene buen suspenso.
