Stephen King is one of the most prominent horror/fantasy authors of this era, most people have probably seen a movie based on one of his works, and when it comes to horror fans I would bet everyone is a fan of a handful of stories written by him.
This author has more stories than I can count, and it is always nice to discover a film I haven't seen with a story from Stephen King. A couple of months ago I saw the original The Stand series, which was about the end of the world and it was cool. Last night, I had the chance of seeing this movie from the 80s called The Dead Zone, I didn't even know King had a story called like that. What convinced me to watch this movie wasn't only the fact the story is based on a King's novel but that both the director and the main actor are great too.
The director is David Cronenberg, who is well-known for the tons of movies he directed between the 70s and 90s, his golden years. As a fun fact, his son Brandon Cronenberg has started to direct movies in recent years, and so far there are at least 2 of them worth watching, Antiviral and Possessor. The main character, on the other hand, is played by the well-known actor Christopher Walken.

Anoche tuve la oportunidad de ver esta película de los 80 llamada The Dead Zone, ni siquiera sabía que King tenía una historia que se llamaba así. Lo que me convenció de ver esta película no fue solo el hecho de que la historia está basada en una novela de King, sino que tanto el director como el actor principal también son geniales.
El director es David Cronenberg, conocido por las toneladas de películas que dirigió entre los años 70 y 90, sus años dorados. What is the film all about?
The Dead Zone is a story about psychic abilities. The main character is a regular guy who works as a teacher and one night he has an ugly car accident. He almost dies, goes into a coma for a long time, and when he finally wakes up he suddenly is capable of having visions related to the person he is touching at the time. Neither he nor anyone else understand how he developed this ability, but it is are real and it works.
After he wakes up, he needs to recover from all the consequences of the accident. He will have psychological, emotional, as well as physical challenges to overcome, and all of that coupled with this newfound paranormal ability can be quite overwhelming at times. His whole life has changed and even though for his parents this was a slow process due to the time he spent in a coma, for him these changes happened in a single day.
One of the things I didn't like was how innocent he was in managing his newfound ability. Maybe he was in disbelief as he went through the process of realizing this is really happening to him. But I don't think it was wise for him to go around telling everyone that he has psychic abilities. This ended up inevitably bringing a lot of noise into his life during a period when all he needs is peace and silence.
Quickly after he left the hospital he was already helping a policeman solve a murder. Reporters were taking pictures of him, asking him questions, and his personal life was just a complete mess. The only people available and willing to help him were his father and the doctor that took care of him while he was in the coma.
Eventually, thanks to his psychic ability, he will feel forced to do an extreme "intervention" in order to prevent a greater evil from becoming true. His ability allows him to watch events that happened in the past, but also events that are happening in the present, as well as events that will happen in the future if nothing is changed.
¿De qué se trata la película?
The Dead Zone es una historia sobre habilidades psíquicas. El personaje principal es un tipo normal que trabaja como profesor y una noche tiene un feo accidente automovilístico. Casi muere, entra en coma durante mucho tiempo, y cuando finalmente se despierta, de repente es capaz de tener visiones relacionadas con la persona que está tocando en ese momento. Ni él ni nadie entienden cómo desarrolló esta habilidad, pero es real y funciona.
Después de que se despierte, necesita recuperarse de todas las consecuencias del accidente. Tendrá desafíos psicológicos, emocionales y físicos que superar, y todo eso, junto con esta nueva habilidad paranormal, puede ser bastante abrumador a veces. Toda su vida ha cambiado y aunque para sus padres este fue un proceso lento debido al tiempo que pasó en coma, para él estos cambios ocurrieron en un solo día.
Una de las cosas que no me gustó fue lo inocente que era en el manejo de su nueva habilidad. Tal vez estaba incrédulo mientras pasaba por el proceso de darse cuenta de que esto realmente le estaba sucediendo. Pero no creo que fuera prudente por su parte decirle a todo el mundo que tiene habilidades psíquicas. Esto terminó trayendo inevitablemente mucho ruido a su vida durante un período en el que todo lo que necesita es paz y silencio.
Poco después de salir del hospital, ya estaba ayudando a un policía a resolver un asesinato. Los reporteros le estaban tomando fotos, haciéndole preguntas, y su vida personal era un completo desastre. Las únicas personas disponibles y dispuestas a ayudarlo eran su padre y el médico que lo atendió mientras estaba en coma.
Eventualmente, gracias a su habilidad psíquica, se sentirá obligado a realizar una "intervención" extrema para evitar que un mal mayor se convierta en realidad. Su habilidad le permite ver eventos que sucedieron en el pasado, pero también eventos que están sucediendo en el presente, así como eventos que sucederán en el futuro si no se cambia nada.

How was the performance from the cast?
It was very noticeable the film is from another era. The main character did a great job with his role but there is a female character whose performance didn't convince me. Martin Sheen, who by the way looks very similar to his son Charlie Sheen in this movie, had a picturesque performance that didn't feel quite right. I don't think this can be blamed on the actors/actresses though. It is normal for films of different eras to have performances that feel strange for modern viewers.
Final thoughts
The Dead Zone was a satisfactory watch. One important thing to notice is that the movie is categorized as horror and it isn't really a horror story. It can be considered a fantasy/scifi story with a bit of drama but there is nothing scary about it. There isn't even suspense in the intense scenes. I recommend watching this film if you are interested in an original story about a regular guy suddenly developing psychic abilities, think of it as a fantasy film and not a horror one.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco?
Fue muy notorio que la película es de otra época. El personaje principal hizo un gran trabajo con su papel, pero hay un personaje femenino cuya actuación no me convenció. Martin Sheen, quien por cierto se parece mucho a su hijo Charlie Sheen en esta película, tuvo una actuación pintoresca que no se sintió del todo bien. Sin embargo, no creo que se pueda culpar a los actores/actrices. Es normal que las películas de diferentes épocas tengan actuaciones que se sientan extrañas para los espectadores modernos.
Reflexiones finales
La zona muerta fue un film satisfactorio. Una cosa importante a tener en cuenta es que la película está categorizada como terror y no es realmente una historia de terror. Puede considerarse una historia de fantasía/ciencia ficción con un poco de drama, pero no tiene nada de aterrador. Ni siquiera hay suspenso en las escenas intensas. Recomiendo ver esta película si estás interesado en una historia original sobre un tipo normal que de repente desarrolla habilidades psíquicas, considérela como una película de fantasía y no de terror.

David Cronenberg gave us a true masterpiece in this wonderful movie, an impressive performance and more than just a movie
It is a story from which we learn everything
The director did a good job, that's for sure. I plan to watch more of his films in these coming days, the guy had a great career.
