I first began to watch this series back when it was released on 2020 mainly because of the presence of the main actress, Kaley Cuoco, and because HBO is known for producing high-quality series, and this one looked like an interesting mix of genres.

The series has comedy, mystery, and some moments can even be considered a bit suspenseful but nothing too intense.

In the first season, Cassie is an alcoholic with some serious personal instabilities due to a troubling childhood. She works as a flight attendant, and during one trip, she gets involved by accident in a criminal conspiracy only because she couldn't stop herself from hooking up with one passenger who gets killed on the same night they slept together.

This becomes a traumatic event for her, so much so that she even has constant conversations with this guy in her own mind after he died. They both discuss all the craziness that she's living and he even helps her sometimes.

She will have to figure out what really happened on this trip, and all sorts of people will also get involved in this investigation. The police will obviously get involved, but also people with a dubious reputation. Suspicions will be raised about multiple characters because the big mystery of season 1, is what really happened to the guy who got murdered. Who killed him and why?

She will learn about the personal life of the guy that was killed, and about also about parts of his business life, which wasn't particularly very clean.

The series had a lot of twists along the way thanks to its mysterious nature, and since it is also a comedy it couldn't have a harsh ending so everything turns out all right.

This season, she has already begun to work for the CIA, and she is some type of clumsy spy. Officially, she is considered a civil asset, which I guess makes her a spy that assumes a lower risk because she really doesn't know how to handle herself in challenging circumstances. She is a bit messy and is the type of person that can easily screw something up but usually in a funny way. There will be a lot of family drama this season and I guess this was a necessary thing to include because her entire adulthood is conditioned by her dysfunctional childhood, especially because her dad was a total mess. These scenes were far from being my favorites but it made sense to explore this part of the character.

A big part of the series in season 1 was about the conversations with Alex, the dead guy, that took place in her head, which I guessed was the result of her trauma. Since that case was already solved by the end of the first season, this time the series uses the same concept, conversations inside her mind, but this time these conversations are with herself. Given the fact she has changed a lot, she went from being a very messy person to someone much more functional and organized, and in these conversations, her old self is kind of teasing her and messing with her. She has quit alcohol and seems to have been improving a lot on a personal level.

The beginning of this season quickly makes the viewer grow suspicious about the mental health of the main character. It seemed like she was experiencing a case of split personality or something like that, but since this series is about mystery, I was also thinking the show could have been misdirecting the viewer on this occasion. The series wasted no time in showing the viewers another extreme situation that happens very close to her, but this time, since she is involved with the CIA, it made some sense for her to be exposed to situations that aren't common for normal people.

This season adds a very cool way of presenting situations when the main character is either following someone or being followed. When this happens, the series shows several cameras at the same time where can see both characters as the persecution or the intense situation is taking place.

Cassie has 2 amazing friends that have been helping her with all her issues since season 1. Her friend Annie is a lawyer and has good common sense so she is always good for giving useful advice, and Annie's boyfriend Max is well knowledgeable when it comes to computer stuff, he usually solves all the technical issues there might be. There was something funny about Max because it always seemed he had no job and spends all his time helping Cassie with whatever she needed help with. I don't remember that character ever mentioning or talking about his job, but maybe he said something in season 1, and I don't remember.

There is a new character that gets introduced this season and since the beginning, she had this aura of mystery surrounding her. She is a colleague of Cassie called Grace so she also works as a flight attendant, and she seems to have a cool personality but it is clear from the beginning that there is something about her.

There are also a couple of 2 characters that looked like very clumsy villains. They didn't have this dangerous vibe and I believe their personality might have been too exaggerated which made every scene with them less convincing. Every time there is a dangerous situation, given the fact this series is mainly a comedy, there is never a real feeling of tension or suspense because it is obvious everything will turn out all right for the good characters.

We will see everything from murders, to robberies, kidnappings, lies, and a couple of twists will also be revealed towards the end.

As the season progresses, Cassie can't prevent herself from getting overwhelmed by everything that's happening to her and she almost suffers an emotional breakdown and it was understandable. She was dealing with high-level criminals and there were even North Korean spies and hitmen involved, many times I felt that Cassie was out of her depth but somehow she manages to overcome many difficulties. The plot is very crazy but the series can easily be considered enjoyable and just like in season 1, there will also be important twists and revelations towards the end.

Final thoughts

The series is fun, not a masterpiece but it is very watchable and enjoyable. The actress Kaley Cuoco made a good job portraying all the different emotions her messy character goes through, and even though some parts of the story were exaggerated, the final result is a cool series that many people can enjoy.

If you are in the mood for a series that doesn't take itself too seriously and you can enjoy while relaxing, this one might be a very good choice.

Something about this series reminds me of the movie: The Hangover. well, maybe this comparison doesn't make sense because in this story you're reviewing there is a murder involved. I haven't seen it, but you're right that HBO is a master of quality productions. I like black humor and mystery, so I'll give it a try. I think I'm going to like it, 🙈.

avatar

A mí me gustan.

Saludos 🤗
