This film, from the very beginning, portrays the inevitable loneliness that comes with growing old and reaching the last days of our lives. It must be a challenging period and the psychological changes must be massive, especially when an old man or woman doesn't have anyone close to share some time with. If loneliness is already destructive in young people, in old people it must have even worse effects.
This story could have easily been developed as a drama, however, the addition of several horror elements made it a very memorable experience for me for all the reasons I will explain below
What was the story about?
The story is about a very old woman who doesn't look to have anyone close to her to keep her company. On the outside, she seems to handle her situation very nicely, but in the first couple of minutes, we already know something is wrong with her and with a mysterious third character.
The other main character is her granddaughter, a young woman who works as s model and even though she lives in another country, she is the closest family member the old woman has.
The film quickly informs the viewers about the granddaughter's parents, and we quickly understand why she is the one in charge of taking care of the old lady.
These 2 women don't have it easy, they only have each other, and just like the old woman is already experiencing loneliness due to her age, the young woman also has some kind of emptiness when it comes to her lack of abundant family relationships, she doesn't appear to have any brother, sister, uncle, aunt, anything. Her social relationships, on the other hand, are normal for someone her age, which means she knows a lot of people and has an active social and professional life.
Old age, empathy, and love
Soon enough, and for reasons I prefer not to mention to avoid spoilers, the young woman finds herself temporarily living with her grandmother and having to figure out how to keep on top of her professional responsibilities and personal life.
She takes the conscious decision of making a small sacrifice in order to invest time in the well-being of her beloved grandmother, knowing that other aspects of her life would have to be put on hold.
This film can make old age a bit scary for the viewers because it exploits the vulnerability we will all endure once we reach that period in our lives. It makes it clear that having loved ones is probably the only way to survive and kind of enjoy life. The film also looks to combine and ultimately exploit, the stress that people feel when having an old family member in a bad health state, and this stress can get even bigger when it is just one person doing the caring.
Esta película, desde el principio, retrata la inevitable soledad que conlleva envejecer y llegar a los últimos días de nuestras vidas. Debe ser un período desafiante y los cambios psicológicos deben ser masivos, especialmente cuando un anciano o una anciana no tienen a nadie cercano con quien compartir algún tiempo. Si la soledad ya es destructiva en los jóvenes, en los viejos debe tener efectos aún peores.
Esta historia podría haberse desarrollado fácilmente como un drama, sin embargo, la adición de varios elementos de terror la convirtió en una experiencia memorable para mí por todas las razones que explicaré a continuación.
¿De qué trataba la historia?

El otro personaje principal es su nieta, una joven que trabaja como modelo y aunque vive en otro país, es el familiar más cercano que tiene la anciana.
La película rápidamente informa a los espectadores sobre los padres de la nieta, y rápidamente comprendemos por qué ella es la encargada de cuidar a la anciana.
Estas 2 mujeres no lo tienen fácil, solo se tienen la una a la otra, y así como la anciana ya está experimentando la soledad por su edad, la joven también tiene una especie de vacío en cuanto a su falta de relaciones familiares abundantes , ella no parece tener ningún hermano, hermana, tío, tía, nada. Sus relaciones sociales, en cambio, son normales para alguien de su edad, lo que significa que conoce mucha gente y tiene una vida social y profesional activa.
Vejez, empatía y amor
Muy pronto, y por razones que prefiero no mencionar para evitar spoilers, la joven se encuentra viviendo temporalmente con su abuela y teniendo que esforzarse en ver como se mantiene al tanto de sus responsabilidades profesionales y su vida personal.
Ella toma la decisión consciente de hacer un pequeño sacrificio para invertir tiempo en el bienestar de su amada abuela, sabiendo que otros aspectos de su vida tendrían que quedar en relegados a un segundo plano.
Esta película puede hacer que la vejez sea un poco aterradora para los espectadores porque explota la vulnerabilidad que todos viviremos una vez que lleguemos a ese período de nuestras vidas. Deja en claro que tener seres queridos es probablemente la única forma de sobrevivir y disfrutar de la vida. La película también busca combinar y, en última instancia, explotar el estrés que sienten las personas cuando tienen un familiar anciano en mal estado de salud, y este estrés puede aumentar aún más cuando es solo una persona la que se encarga del cuidado.
Dementia
Signs of dementia can easily creep out many people when watching them for the first time, and the actress Almudena Amor makes s good job portraying the increased state of concern her character experienced as the story advanced and more strange stuff begin to happen, including weird behavior from her grandmother.
Trying to interact with people who appear to be completely absent in their minds is very unsettling, and after enough time, it becomes very mentally taxing for the person providing the care, even to the point of affecting their own mental sanity. The film briefly touched on this potential complication in what was one of the creepiest scenes I have seen in a long time.
There is one dysfunctional aspect in our societies that also takes part in the story, and that is the difficulties in including the care of our old ones in our regular lives. It can be s disruptive event even though it is completely natural and many lifestyles are simply incompatible with this type of responsibility.
Mysterious third character
The film isn't only about the health degeneration of old age, that's only part of the plot. There is also a mystery surrounding the third character, and slight use of paranormal elements is also included to make everything even more suspenseful.
There is a great moment that I really loved when the granddaughter discovers a diary from her childhood, and we see a mix of the moments that happened in the past and her reaction in the present as she tries to remember something about what she's reading.
At this moment, it becomes clear there are some secrets related to the grandmother, and at least in my case, I started to wonder if these secrets were of sinister nature as the film was implying.
The last 15 minutes or so, were absolutely intense, with scary scene after scary scene and a final twist that will probably shock many viewers. I ended up loving the film, and its ending improved everything they did previously. It was a perfect final touch if you ask me.
Main participants, their experience and previous works
The director was Paco Plaza, a man who started his directing career in the mid-90s and has participated in 22 different productions so far. Amng his most popular works we can find Historias para no dormir, Eye for an Eye, and Verónica.
Demencia
Los signos de demencia pueden asustar fácilmente a muchas personas cuando los ven por primera vez, y la actriz Almudena Amor hace un buen trabajo al retratar el estado de mayor preocupación que experimenta su personaje a medida que avanza la historia y comienzan a suceder más cosas extrañas, incluyendo comportamientos extraños de su abuela.

La película no trata solo de la degeneración de la salud de la vejez, eso es solo una parte de la trama. También hay un misterio en torno al tercer personaje, y se incluye un ligero uso de elementos paranormales para hacer que todo tenga aún más suspenso.
Hay un gran momento que me encantó cuando la nieta descubre un diario de su infancia, y vemos una mezcla de los momentos que sucedieron en el pasado y su reacción en el presente mientras trata de recordar algo sobre lo que está leyendo.
En este momento, queda claro que hay algunos secretos relacionados con la abuela, y al menos en mi caso, comencé a preguntarme si estos secretos eran de naturaleza siniestra como lo insinuaba la película.
Los últimos 15 minutos más o menos fueron absolutamente intensos, con escena de horror tras escena de horror y un giro final que probablemente sorprenderá a muchos espectadores. Terminé amando la película, y su final mejoró todo lo que hicieron antes. Fue un toque final perfecto si me preguntan.
Principales participantes, su experiencia y trabajos previos
El director fue Paco Plaza, un hombre que comenzó su carrera como director a mediados de los 90 y ha participado en 22 producciones diferentes hasta el momento. Entre sus obras más populares se encuentran Historias para no dormir, Ojo por ojo y Verónica.
Vera Valdez plays the creepy grandmother. An old lonely lady who needs the help of her granddaughter. She doesn't say a single word during the movie except for weird whispers. Her acting career isn't very active so maybe acting is more like a hobby for her, we can find her in The Last Land, and Sol Alegria.
Almudena Amor plays the granddaughter. She is a young woman, working as a model in Paris and living a very cool life. However, she isn't selfish and decides to give her grandmother the help she needs. Amor's acting career began very recently, only 3 years ago, and so far she has participated in 6 productions, including The Good Boss, Historias para no Dormir, and an upcoming production called Hermana Muerte.
How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the camera work?
The camera work was spectacular and coupled with some cool music and sounds, they were able to give a sense of suspense to what could otherwise be considered normal scenes. Everything related to the editing of the film was an incredible job.
The actress who plays the old woman, Vera Valdez, was amazing. I don't think many horror characters can constantly creep you out without uttering a single word, and thanks to her performance as well as the camera work, this old grandma could get scary and creepy as hell.
The young woman also did an acceptable job, but the truth is, the real star of this film is grandma, her secrets, and her true intentions.
Final thoughts
The film was a decent horror Spanish production with a slow but very appropriate pace, which is what I was expecting given the topic of horror in old age.
I haven't seen many Spanish horror productions in my life, and the ones I can remember right now are just the REC films, and the HBO series 30 Coins. This film isn't as intense as those productions, except for its ending of course, but it gets the job done when it comes to providing original horror in a non-common setting.
This was a refreshing viewing because I haven't watched anything from the horror genre recently, and I finally found some cool horror to enjoy.

La actriz que interpreta a la anciana, Vera Valdez, estuvo espectacular. No creo que muchos personajes de terror puedan asustarte constantemente sin pronunciar una sola palabra, y gracias a su actuación y al trabajo de cámara, esta anciana abuela podría volverse aterradora y muy pero que muy espeluznante.
La joven también hizo un trabajo aceptable, pero la verdad es que la verdadera estrella de esta película es la abuela, sus secretos y sus verdaderas intenciones.
Reflexiones finales
La película fue una producción española de terror decente con un ritmo lento pero muy apropiado, que es lo que esperaba dado el tema del terror en la vejez.
No he visto muchas producciones españolas de terror en mi vida, y las que recuerdo ahora mismo son solo las películas de REC, y la serie de HBO 30 Monedas. Esta película no es tan intensa como esas producciones, excepto por su final, por supuesto, pero hace el trabajo cuando se trata de proporcionar terror original en un entorno no común.
Esta fue una experiences refrescante porque no he visto nada del género de terror recientemente, y finalmente encontré algo de terror genial para disfrutar.

Its a terrorist act on American soil while some say its not real or Im a mental case. Many know its real. This is an ignored detrimental to humanity domestic and foreign threat. Ask informed soldiers in the American military what their oath is and tell them about the day you asked me why. Nobody has I guess. Maybe someone told ill informed soldiers they cant protect America from military leaders in control with ill intent. How do we protect locked up soldiers from telling the truth?

Me gustó esta producción española, la reseñe hace unos días. La anciana es terrorífica jajaja. La próxima película de la joven actriz es con este mismo director, está haciéndose famosa. Te recomiendo El Buen Patrón , ella tiene un pequeño pero importante personaje en ese film que es una sátira muy divertida. Creo que te puede gustar.
La abuela me pareció un buen film de un director que ya ha tenido éxito dentro del género (REC) por supuesto no es la mejor película de terror pero si logra mantenerte enganchado, buena fotografía, creación de atmósfera y ese final muy bueno, me hizo sufrir su parte final.
Ah! El director de 30 Monedas acaba de estrenar una peli, es un slashers ambientado en Venecia, creo que se llama Veneciafrenia y estoy deseando verla. Soy fan de Alex de la Iglesia , me gusta los desmadres de sus películas y además actúa una actriz española que me encanta.
Hacía tiempo que no disfrutaba un film de terror tanto como este. Muchas veces me ha pasado que espero algo de terror cuando generalmente resulta ser otro género como suspenso, o resulta que sí es de terror pero muy suave.
Voy a revisar la del El Buen Patrón, no la había escuchado así que gracias por la recomendación!
El final del film me parece espectacular, ya desde que se muestra que la mujer tenía pesadillas con su abuela desde que era niña se sabe que hay algo muy raro con esta anciana. Y luego cuando intenta irse y no puede comienza el terror que a mi me encanta.
La de Veneciafrenia estoy esperando que esté disponible en algún servicio de streaming para verla, desde la serie de 30 monedas ese director me gano como fan aunque antes ya tenía algunas producciones bastante buenas, fue la de 30 Monedas la que más he disfrutado.
