I have read many great things about this film The Medium, and I was very excited about finally having the time to watch it. Not only because of its genre and the positive critics it has received, but also because it can be considered as an exotic film for me given the fact it is from Thailand and South Korea.
Throughout my life, I have seen several horror productions from Asia and I have enjoyed them a lot. In fact, one of my favorite horror franchises, The Ring, is originally from Japan with its original name being Ringu, and Shutter, the original film from 2004 is from Thailand. So I think many horror fans can easily agree than Asian countries have great taste when it comes to horror.
I didn't expect this film to outrightly scare me to the point of making it difficult for me to sleep, but I did expect to see some enjoyable and intense horror moments. I already knew the film was slow-paced and the plot was, in short words, about a possession.
Without further ado, this is my thoughts about the film.
First of all, the movie was created as some type of fictional documentary. I have seen in the past fake documentaries from the horror genre, with my favorite being, Lake Mungo. I wasn't expecting this film to be like this, but it was fine by me.
We see the camera crew doing a documentary about the female Shaman of a small village where people are very religious, spiritual, and superstitious. They take their ancient beliefs very seriously, and the Shaman is respected by everyone.
In this village, the Shaman is believed to be in connection with a sacred and ancient spirit, which is what gives the Shaman special and secret knowledge about how to deal with some issues that affect the local people and she can also give them protection from supernatural threats.
He leído muchas cosas geniales sobre esta película The Medium, y estaba muy emocionado de finalmente tener el tiempo para verla. No solo por su género y las críticas positivas que ha recibido, sino también porque puede considerarse como una película exótica para mí dado que es de Tailandia y Korea del Sur.
A lo largo de mi vida, he visto varias producciones de terror de Asia y las he disfrutado mucho. De hecho, una de mis franquicias de terror favoritas, The Ring, es originaria de Japón con su nombre original siendo Ringu, y Shutter, la película original de 2004, es de Tailandia. Así que creo que muchos fanáticos del terror pueden estar fácilmente de acuerdo en que los países asiáticos tienen un gran gusto cuando se trata de horror.
No esperaba que esta película me asustara hasta el punto de dificultarme el sueño, pero sí esperaba ver algunos momentos de terror disfrutables e intensos. Ya sabía que la película era de ritmo lento y la trama era, en pocas palabras, sobre una posesión.
Sin más preámbulos, este es mi pensamiento sobre la película.
En primer lugar, la película fue creada como una especie de documental de ficción. He visto en el pasado documentales falsos del género de terror, siendo mi favorito, Lake Mungo. No esperaba que esta película fuera así, pero igual estuvo bien para mí.
Vemos al equipo de cámara haciendo un documental sobre la Chamán de un pequeño pueblo donde la gente es muy religiosa, espiritual y supersticiosa. Se toman muy en serio sus antiguas creencias, y la Chamán es respetada por todos.
En este pueblo, se cree que la Chamán está en conexión con un espíritu sagrado y antiguo, que es lo que le da a la Chamán un conocimiento especial y secreto sobre cómo lidiar con algunos problemas que afectan a la población local y también puede brindarles protección contra amenazas sobrenaturales.
We are quickly informed about some strange things that happened to the men of the Shaman's family, and I thought there was more to it than what they told in the beginning so I was expecting this topic to return to the discussion at a later stage of the film.
The first weird scene involving creepy behavior from a character was also shown at the beginning of the film but it didn't really have anything too original and so far I thought the film wasn't being really surprising. The good thing is that the fake documentary looked like a real one and if a group of friends watches this production without being aware it is a fictional work, I would bet at least a few of them would believe this was real life.
In the Shaman's family, it quickly becomes obvious there is some family drama thanks to a teenage girl but nothing that shouldn't be unsolvable in normal circumstances. But this time, I had the suspicion it was going to be different because this is obviously not a normal family, and it was clear there were strange things going on with that girl.
The Shaman understands she needs to intervene to help and protect her niece, but she also seemed a bit overwhelmed by the situation because she wasn't 100% clear about what was really going on with the teen girl. The Shaman has a lot of knowledge about the spiritual world, but that doesn't mean she cannot feel insecure or nervous when facing challenging situations.
The fact that it is her own responsibility to save her niece from whatever evilness is affecting her makes her feel very stressed but she knows there is only one way and it is to continue forward and do whatever it takes to solve this traumatic problem.
The performance of the girl who plays the possessed character, Narilya Gulmongkolpech, was acceptable, but once again it didn't have anything new that hasn't been already seen in previous productions about possessions.
Nos informan rápidamente sobre algunas cosas extrañas que les sucedieron a los hombres de la familia de la Chamán, y pensé que había más de lo que contaron al principio, así que esperaba que este tema volviera a la discusión en una etapa posterior de la película.
La primera escena extraña que involucra un comportamiento espeluznante de un personaje también se mostró al comienzo de la película, pero realmente no tenía nada demasiado original y hasta ahora pensé que la película no estaba siendo realmente sorprendente. Lo bueno es que el falso documental parecía real y si un grupo de amigos ve esta producción sin ser consciente de que es una obra de ficción, apostaría a que al menos algunos de ellos creerían que esto era la vida real.
En la familia del chamán, rápidamente se hace obvio que hay algo de drama familiar gracias a una adolescente, pero nada que no deba ser irresoluble en circunstancias normales. Pero esta vez, tenía la sospecha de que iba a ser diferente porque obviamente esta no es una familia normal, y estaba claro que estaban sucediendo cosas extrañas con esa chica.
La chamán entiende que necesita intervenir para ayudar y proteger a su sobrina, pero también parecía un poco abrumada por la situación porque no tenía 100% claro lo que realmente estaba pasando con la adolescente. La chamán tiene mucho conocimiento sobre el mundo espiritual, pero eso no significa que no pueda sentirse insegura o nerviosa cuando se enfrenta a situaciones desafiantes.
El hecho de que sea su propia responsabilidad salvar a su sobrina de cualquier maldad que la afecte la hace sentir muy estresada, pero sabe que solo hay un camino y es continuar adelante y hacer lo que sea necesario para resolver este problema traumático.
La actuación de la chica que interpreta al personaje poseído, Narilya Gulmongkolpech, fue aceptable, pero una vez más no tuvo nada nuevo que no se haya visto ya en producciones anteriores sobre posesiones.
The development of the possessed character follows a similar series of events that many fans of the genre already know from previous productions, but the thing that I enjoyed the most was the type of ending they decided to have.
I won't say much about it, only that many people will probably consider it a breath of fresh air when it comes to horror endings. It was nice to see this type of resolution for once, and there were some times that I could describe as intense and very fun to watch.
The movie took its time to begin with the intensity, but I loved how it slowly began to expose the complexity of the plot, to then send the viewer to a massive tornado of paranormal chaos. Having patience with the film will pay off in the end.
Final thoughts
The film was enjoyable to watch and I think it is worth investing the 2 hours it lasts, especially if you are looking for some exotic horror.
Personally, I didn't find it very scary but I believe this is because as I just mentioned before, I have become desensitized to this type of content, and is becoming harder and harder to shock me.
I don't consider this film a must-watch though, but at the same time, I think most people won't regret giving it a watch.
El desarrollo del personaje poseído sigue una serie similar de eventos que muchos fanáticos del género ya conocen de producciones anteriores, pero lo que más disfruté fue el tipo de final que decidieron tener.
No diré mucho al respecto, solo que muchas personas probablemente lo considerarán un soplo de aire fresco cuando se trata de finales de terror. Fue agradable ver este tipo de resolución por una vez, y hubo algunas veces que pude describir como intensas y muy divertidas de ver.
La película se tomó su tiempo para comenzar con la intensidad, pero me encantó cómo se iba exponiendo la complejidad de la trama, para luego enviar al espectador a un tornado masivo de caos paranormal. Tener paciencia con la película dará sus frutos al final.
Reflexiones finales
La película fue disfrutable de ver y creo que vale la pena invertir las 2 horas que dura, especialmente si estás buscando algo de terror exótico.
Personalmente, no lo encontré muy aterrador, pero creo que esto se debe a que, como acabo de mencionar antes, me he vuelto insensible a este tipo de contenido, y cada vez es más difícil sorprenderme.
Sin embargo, no considero que esta película sea imprescindible, pero al mismo tiempo, creo que la mayoría de la gente no se arrepentirá de haberle dado un vistazo.

En países asiáticos se hace muy buen cine del genero y muchas valen la pena verla, esta es una de ellas. El tema de las posesiones es algo muy usado en estas películas, pero no cansa, cuando uno se acerca a cada sub genero de horror, sabe que hay códigos que no van a varias, pero si cada cineasta puede experimentar y agregarle cosas que hagan que marque la diferencia y relaten por encima de otras películas
Esta ha sido de mis preferidas en horror de Asia de los últimos meses. La verdad que me esperaba algo mucho más impactante, pero igual me parece que es un film recomendable. De horror tengo pendiente por ahora ver la de Megan y el anime de Junji Ito en Netflix aunque este último ha venido recibiendo críticas negativas pero igual lo voy a ver hehe.
