Hello Everyone! How are you today? I hope everyone is well. I recently watched a movie that broke my heart. The film was directed by Joon Ik Lee and the script was written by screenwriter Ji Hye Kim and was released on October 2, 2013. The film "Hope" has won seven awards and has been nominated at award shows thirteen times . This South Korean film was released in 2013, but I just watched it in 2022. I never knew about this film before, but after seeing the recommendations on Instagram I was immediately interested in watching it. After watching it, I thought that I should make a review about this film. So, are you looking forward to the review? Let's get started!

MOVIE REVIEW

The film "Hope" tells the story of the life of a minor named Sowon (Lee Re) means hope, who is a victim of sexual violence. The story in this film is based on the true story of an eight-year-old boy who became a victim of sexual and physical violence by an unknown man that occurred in 2008 in South Korea. So Won is a sophomore in elementary school with a simple life with her father, Im Dong Hoon (Seol Kyung gu), as a factory worker and her mother, Kim Mi Hee (Uhm Ji Won) who works as a grocery store keeper. She is a bright and cheerful child, although in fact he lacks love from his parents who are busy working. So Won grows up to be a smart girl and is more independent than other children her age. She went to and from school without being escorted or picked up by her parents.

It was a rainy in the morning, Sowon went to school a bit later than usual. Young Seok Sowon's friend was waiting for her but finally left him for fear of being late for school. Sowon went alone without being accompanied by her mother using an umbrella. Previously, the mother advised Sowon to go to school via the highway because the alleys are usually quieter. Sowon obeyed her mother's words, and when she arrived near the school suddenly a middle-aged man approached her and asked Sowon to share an umbrella with her. That's when the rape incident occurred. As a result of the rape and abuse, Sowon almost died. She had to undergo major surgery, and even had to have an artificial anus made because her anus was crushed and had to be stitched up. This would be a lifelong handicap for the little girl.

This incident not only hurt Sowon alone, but also for her parents and some of her closest people. Sowon's father and mother were devastated, even her mother fainted. It was only then that it was discovered that the mother was five months pregnant. His father also had to quit his job and stay in the hospital. They went through a lot of trouble, but luckily many relatives helped out.

After a while after the operation, Sowon woke up and was able to talk to her father. But after a few things made her remember the incident, he became embarrassed and didn't want to see his father or any man. The cheerful Sowon turned into someone who was gloomy and didn't even want to talk anymore. But with the help of a psychologist he finally started laughing again and was able to testify to the police about the perpetrator. After receiving testimony from the victim, the police swiftly arrested the perpetrator.

The saddest thing is when Sowon doesn't want to see her father. Her father was willing to wear the kokomong costume, Sowon's favorite character. He did it to comfort his daughter. Over time Sowon's condition began to improve and was able to return home. Sowon, who was initially afraid of not being able to go to school again because of embarrassment, was finally excited again thanks to letters from her friends that were pasted on her door. Sowon started going to school with her friends, until then she still couldn't see her father. Her father, who wanted his son to be happy again, was willing to go to school wearing a kokomong costume to entertain his daughter. Sowon realized that kokomong was her father and told her father to stop wearing that costume.

Sowon's condition has started to improve, she can testify in court. During the trial Sowon said as her experienced. However, the defendant admitted that he did not remember the incident because he was drunk. The defendant's confession was accepted because based on Sowon's confession, the man smelled of alcohol at the time of the incident. Thus the judge decided to sentence him to 12 years in prison. Everyone in the courtroom felt it was unfair for someone to have committed such a heinous act. Sowon's father, who did not accept the judge's decision, took a block and intended to kill the defendant, but Sowon held him back. The trial ended with the judge's decision which was deemed unfair.But at least the defendant will receive a sentence of 12 years. Although for Sowon this will be a lifetime of suffering for her.

Not long after that Sowon's mother gave birth to a baby boy. For Sowon the birth of her little brother was a gift. At least the happiness that his younger brother gave her could make her forget the incident a little.

How do I feel after watching this film?

I can't stop crying while watching this movie. How could there be such a depraved human being who had the heart to rape and abuse a little girl without sin. My heart is really broken, especially since this film is based on a true story and that means that vile humans are really living in this world. I hope the real victim can live a normal life and forget what happened to her. The fact that this is based on a true story makes me think that the victim and her family must have had a really hard time telling the story because it was like opening an old wound.
