Es posible que hayan visto la película de Entrevista con el vampiro, protagonizada por Tom Cruise y Brad Pitt allá en 1994. Una película basada en la novela de Anne Rice del mismo nombre. Pues, esta es una nueva adaptación.

Para los que no recuerdan acerca de qué va todo esto, se trata de un vampiro solitario llamado Lestat -interpretado por Sam Reid en la serie-, quién se obsesiona con el humano Louis -interpretado por Jacob Anderson en la serie- y lo convence de convertirse en un vampiro y en su compañero. Louis tiene diferentes orígenes dependiendo de si ves la serie o la película, pero definitivamente en ambas versiones ya no soporta la vida como ser humano.

For those who don't remember what this is all about, it's about a lonely vampire named Lestat -played by Sam Reid in the series-, who becomes obsessed with the human Louis -played by Jacob Anderson in the series- and convinces him to become a vampire and his mate. Louis has different origins depending on whether you watch the series or the movie, but in both versions he definitely can't stand life as a human anymore.

En el camino, convierten y adoptan a la adolescente Claudia -interpretada por Bailey Bass en la serie- como su hija. En realidad, es Lestat quien lo hace, con mantener a Louis a su lado en mente; mientras que Louis le suplica a Lestat que lo haga por un sentimiento profundo de culpa por haber puesto a la humana Claudia al borde de la muerte.

Along the way, they convert and adopt the teenage Claudia - played by Bailey Bass in the series - as their daughter. In reality, it is Lestat who does so, with keeping Louis by his side in mind; while Louis pleads with Lestat to do so out of a deep sense of guilt for having brought the human Claudia to the brink of death.

Cuando busqué en Youtube análisis y resúmenes de esta serie, dentro de mí sabía que iba a encontrar las típicas y acostumbradas objeciones debido al cambio de raza en dos de los protagonistas. Pero esperé lo mejor de todos ellos, y definitivamente me gustó lo convincentes que, en líneas generales, fueron los actores principales. Desde el punto de vista de Louis, pude empatizar con su posición al verse constantemente menospreciado solo por su color de piel. No hizo falta que hablara mucho al respecto, pude ver en sus expresiones la decepción, la ira, la tristeza, la resignación también… Incluso sentí que ya sabía todo lo que estaba pasando por su cabeza constantemente, y lo veía confirmado vez tras vez. Desde su obsesión con Lestat que él confundía con amor, su profundo apego por Claudia, su culpa por la muerte de su hermano, su dolor por el rechazo gradual de su familia… Me sentí identificada en cada parte y por eso él va primero aquí.

When I searched Youtube for reviews and summaries of this series, I knew in my gut that I was going to find the usual objections due to the change of race in two of the main characters. But I expected the best from all of them, and I definitely liked how convincing, overall, the main actors were. From Louis' point of view, I could empathise with his position of being constantly belittled just because of his skin colour. He didn't need to say much about it, I could see in his expressions the disappointment, the anger, the sadness, the resignation too... I even felt like I already knew everything that was constantly going through his head, and I saw it confirmed time after time. From his obsession with Lestat that he mistook for love, his deep attachment to Claudia, his guilt over his brother's death, his grief over his family's gradual rejection... I felt identified in every part and that's why he goes first here.

Por otro lado, tenemos a Lestat, que me tuvo completamente fascinada, emocionada y en suspenso… incluso cuando se comportaba como un narcisista psicópata era demasiado interesante como para no hacerse decenas de preguntas en un milisegundo. Realmente la serie no dio el punto de vista de él, aunque sí el de Louis y el de Claudia, lo que facilitó que se viera como el villano indestructible. Pero yo soy partidaria de que ninguna persona es absolutamente buena o absolutamente mala, y de que a los villanos algo los ha vuelto villanos… De verdad desearía que para una segunda temporada desarrollaran el punto de vista de Lestat. No me lo perdería. Y, para finalizar, Claudia, que no aparece sino hasta el tercer o cuarto episodio. Si tengo que hacer una descripción en pocas palabras de su personalidad, sería: jovial, instintiva y determinada. Me gustó cómo desarrollaron su personaje, y los cambios tangibles que sufría a medida que se iba haciendo mayor. Podías ver que ahí había una persona con más madurez, a pesar de que el cuerpo seguía siendo el mismo, no como en el caso de los anteriormente mencionados… ellos se quedaron estancados en su desarrollo personal.

On the other hand, we have Lestat, who had me completely fascinated, excited and in suspense... even when he was acting like a narcissistic psychopath he was too interesting not to ask dozens of questions in a millisecond. The series didn't really give his point of view, though it did give Louis' and Claudia's, which made it easier to see him as the indestructible villain. But I'm a believer that no person is absolutely good or absolutely evil, and that villains are made villains by something... I really wish they would develop Lestat's point of view for a second season. I wouldn't miss it. And finally, Claudia, who doesn't appear until the third or fourth episode. If I had to describe her personality in a few words, it would be: jovial, instinctive and determined. I liked the way they developed her character, and the tangible changes she underwent as she got older. You could see that there was a more mature person there, even though the body remained the same, unlike the aforementioned... they were stagnant in their personal development.

Hay que detenernos en la relación entre Lestat y Louis. Hablo desde mi ignorancia al no recordar con claridad la película, y corríjanme si me equivoco, pero… si fueron ellos en la serie abiertamente homosexuales, ¿lo fueron de igual manera en la película? No lo creo. No recuerdo haber quedado completamente convencida de que entre ellos había una relación más allá de la necesidad mutua de compañía hasta que adoptaron a Claudia y Lestat se refiere a ella como “nuestra hija”**. También hay que mencionar lo tóxico de todo ello… comenzando por el hecho de que Lestat no tenía sentido de fidelidad hacia Louis ni compartía con él su amor inquebrantable hacia Claudia, lo que generaba que ella fuera un tema recurrente en sus discusiones. Al principio, hubo un llevarse bien por compartir su instinto asesino con ella… pero al ir ella cumpliendo más edad y pasando por la etapa de la rebeldía, de desarrolló un odio exagerado entre ellos. Nada que ver con el apego paternal que le profesaba Louis a Claudia, y que ella compartió desde el primer momento, al llamarlo “padre” a él y no a Lestat (se refería a él como “tío”).

We have to dwell on the relationship between Lestat and Louis. I'm speaking from ignorance as I don't remember the film clearly, and correct me if I'm wrong, but... if they were openly gay in the series, were they openly gay in the film? I don't think so. I don't remember being completely convinced that there was a relationship between them beyond a mutual need for companionship until they adopted Claudia and Lestat refers to her as "our daughter"**. It's also worth mentioning how toxic it all was... starting with the fact that Lestat had no sense of fidelity to Louis and shared with him his unwavering love for Claudia, which made her a recurring theme in their discussions. At first, they got along well because he shared his killer instinct with her... but as she grew older and went through the stage of rebellion, an exaggerated hatred developed between them. Nothing to do with the paternal attachment Louis had for Claudia, which she shared from the first moment, calling him "father" and not Lestat (she referred to him as "uncle").

¿La recomendaría? Sí, a pesar de que los episodios finales no tuvieron tantos buenos momentos ni tanta coherencia como los primeros, aún le tengo fe, y enfatizaría que vieran los primeros episodios, que están cargados de suspenso y emoción. ¿Mejor la película o la serie? No puedo decir que ninguna de las dos me dio el final que deseaba. Pero tengo la esperanza, como dije, de que continúen con la segunda temporada y le den una conclusión donde no asesinen a Claudia, como sí pasó en la película de 1994, donde Lestat sufra un cambio radical y le empiece a importar todo el daño que deja a su paso, y donde Louis demuestre que ha aprendido a quererse un poco y a no hacer depender su felicidad de una pareja.

Would I recommend it? Yes, even though the final episodes didn't have as many good moments or as much coherence as the first ones, I still have faith in it, and I would emphasise that you should watch the first few episodes, which are full of suspense and emotion. Better the film or the series? I can't say that either gave me the ending I wanted. But I am hopeful, as I said, that they will continue with the second season and give it a conclusion where Claudia is not murdered, as she was in the 1994 film, where Lestat undergoes a radical change and starts to care about all the damage he leaves in his wake, and where Louis shows that he has learned to love himself a little and not make his happiness dependent on a partner.
