Heaven's Light vs Hellfire: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996).- ENG/ESP.

Greetings, Hive friends! I hope you are enjoying your weekend. I know there are many animated movies from different studios, and Disney seems to be the most typical, the most sounded when we talk about animation, however I consider that it has its well earned fame for really incredible stories where they have always known how to add the perfect doses of magic. As a general rule, Disney is known for bringing to the screen great politically correct stories, but I think that with this adaptation of the novel "Our Lady of Paris" by Victor Hugo took a risk that resulted in a wonderful proposal. I bring you today the review of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", one of my favorite films from the studio..

¡Saludos, amigos de Hive! Espero que estén disfrutando su fin de semana. Sé que hay muchas películas animadas de diferentes estudios, y Disney parece ser lo más típico, lo más sonado cuando hablamos de animación, sin embargo considero que tiene su fama bien ganada por historias realmente increíbles en donde siempre han sabido agregar las dosis perfectas de magia. Por norma general, Disney es conocido por llevar a las pantallas grandes historias políticamente correctas, pero creo que con esta adaptación de la novela “Nuestra Señora de París” de Victor Hugo tomó un riesgo que resultó en una propuesta maravillosa. Les traigo hoy la reseña de “El Jorobado de Notre Dame”, una de mis películas favoritas del estudio.

Our story begins on the streets of a medieval Paris, where the ruthless Judge Frollo fulfills his purpose of maintaining order and control by "cleansing" the streets of gypsies. Frollo does not think about whether his actions violate basic human rights, or whether he is not in a moral position to judge and harass the gypsies, but quite the opposite; for Frollo, he embodies the duty and power of God. After the chase, he takes the life of a woman and picks up the burden he leaves on the floor, which is a baby like no other, for it has a malformation. Frollo, not intending to keep the child alive, wanted to throw it into a well, but for the archdeacon who intercedes and tells him that to avoid God's wrath, he forces Frollo to keep the baby.

Nuestra historia empieza en las calles de un París medieval, donde el despiadado juez Frollo cumple su propósito de mantener el orden y el control “limpiando” a las calles de los gitanos. Frollo no piensa en si sus actos violentan derechos humanos básicos, o en si no está en una posición moral para juzgar y hostigar a los gitanos, sino todo lo contrario; para Frollo, él encarna el deber y el poder de Dios. Tras la persecución, le arrebata la vida a una mujer y recoge la carga que deja en el piso, el cual es un bebé como ningún otro, pues tiene una malformación. Frollo, sin intenciones de mantener al niño con vida, quería arrojarlo a un pozo, de no ser por el archidiácono quién intercede y le dice que para evitar la ira de Dios, obliga a que Frollo se quede con el bebé.

This is how we meet Quasimodo, so called because of his hump and his malformation. Unlike Frollo, Quasimodo is noble, dreamy and has a kind heart, but lives in solitude only accompanied by the gargoyles Victor, Hugo and Laverne, in the magnificent cathedral of Notre Dame. In spite of that, supported by his friends (the gargoyles), Quasimodo attends a festival of jesters, where more important characters are introduced, such as Captain Febo and the gypsy Esmeralda. The captain arrives in the city looking for the courthouse, but everything is quickly forgotten when Esmeralda appears at the festival, where she enchants the captain, Quasimodo and the judge Frollo with her dance.

Así es como conocemos a Quasimodo, llamado así por su joroba y su malformación. Al contrario de Frollo, Quasimodo es noble, soñador y tiene un corazón bondadoso, pero vive en soledad solamente acompañado de las gárgolas Victor, Hugo y Laverne, en la magnífica catedral de Notre Dame. A pesar de eso, apoyado por sus amigos (las gárgolas), Quasimodo asiste a un festival de bufones, donde se introducen más personajes importantes como el capitán Febo y la gitana Esmeralda. El capitán llega a la ciudad buscando el palacio de justicia, pero rápidamente todo se ve olvidado ante la presentación de Esmeralda en el festival, donde con su danza encanta al capitán, a Quasimodo y al juez Frollo.

Later, Quasimodo is chosen as the king of the jesters because of his impressive "mask", but when the audience realizes that this is his real image, that of a malformed bell tower, they begin an attack on him with fruits and vegetables, leaving poor Quasimodo totally defenseless and tortured. The only person who comes to protect him is Esmeralda, who confronts Frollo when he comes to take Quasimodo away and continue his torture. She is accused of witchcraft and condemned to be persecuted by the judge and his army. This is why Esmeralda ends up fleeing and arrives at the cathedral, where Febo finds her and tries to make her understand that he does not want to harm her and that he is willing to help her, until Frollo arrives ready to take her away. Once again, the presence of the archdeacon reminds him that in order to respect the sacred place where he is, he must renounce his desires to do what his will asks of him. While in the church, Esmeralda gets to know Quasimodo better, who cannot help but fall in love with her... Thus, we see how all these characters face cruelty and abuse of power in the name of "justice" represented by Frollo, and we get to know the goodness and aspirations of our hero Quasimodo.

Más tarde, Quasimodo es elegido como el rey de los bufones por su impresionante “máscara”, pero cuando la audiencia se percata de que es esa su real imagen, la de un campanario con una malformación, comienzan un ataque hacía él con frutas y verduras, que dejan al pobre Quasimodo totalmente indefenso y torturado. La única persona que acude a protegerlo es Esmeralda, quien confronta a Frollo cuando este asiste para llevarse a Quasimodo y continuar con su tortura. Es acusada por brujería y condenada a ser perseguida por el juez y su ejército. Es por esto que Esmeralda termina huyendo y llega a la catedral, donde Febo la encuentra y trata de hacerle entender que no quiere hacerle daño y que está dispuesto a ayudarla, hasta que llega Frollo dispuesto a llevársela. Una vez más, la presencia del archidiácono le recuerda que para respetar el lugar sagrado donde está, debe renunciar a sus deseos de hacer lo que su voluntad le pide. Estando en la iglesia, Esmeralda conoce mejor a Quasimodo, quién no puede evitar enamorarse de ella… Así, vemos cómo todos estos personajes se enfrentan a la crueldad y al abuso de poder en nombre de la “justicia” representada por Frollo, y conocemos la bondad y las aspiraciones de nuestro héroe Quasimodo.

For me this film is one of my favorites for so many reasons, starting with how impressive the city of Paris is animated in such a visually rich and splendorous way. Especially because the protagonist of this installment is not Quasimodo or Frollo, but the church itself with its impressive figures of saints or demons, and its protective and menacing gargoyles. I think it is not necessary to be religious to be enchanted by the images of the ancient architecture of this city, and how imposing the cathedral of Notre Dame is.

Para mí esta película es una de mis favoritas por tantas razones, empezando por lo impresionante que es la ciudad de París animada desde una forma tan visualmente rica y esplendorosa. Sobre todo porque la protagonista de esta entrega no es Quasimodo o Frollo, sino la iglesia misma con sus impresionantes figuras de los santos o los demonios, y sus protectoras y amenazantes gárgolas. Creo que no es necesario ser religioso para dejarte encantar por las imágenes de la arquitectura antigua de esta ciudad, y de lo imponente que se muestra la catedral de Notre Dame.

In addition to this, it seems to me that from the beginning adapting Victor Hugo's novel to an animated film was a transcendental idea, something that I don't think we would see nowadays with the studio's latest works. The novel is much darker than the animation lets us see, and the film itself shows us how the characters deal with lust, abuse of power, fear of God, inequality and discrimination. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of those movies that you think has to be for adults, and yet Disney amazingly managed to inject it with its light and childlike essence, magical and with its doses of comedy, even though we must still see scenes of cruelty or sexual innuendo that without them the story would not be what we know it to be.

Además de esto, me parece que desde el principio adaptar la novela de Victor Hugo a una película animada era una idea trascendental, algo que creo que no veríamos en la actualidad con las últimos trabajos del estudio. La novela es mucho más oscura de lo que la animación nos deja ver, y la película en sí nos muestra cómo los personajes lidian con la lujuria, el abuso de poder, el temor a Dios, la desigualdad y la discriminación. El Jorobado de Notre Dame es de esas películas que piensas que tienen que ser para adultos, y sin embargo Disney logró asombrosamente inyectarle su esencia ligera e infantil, mágica y con sus dosis de comedia, a pesar de que de todos modos debemos ver escenas crueles o con insinuaciones sexuales que sin ellas la historia no sería lo que conocemos.

I can't stop recommending you to see this classic from the late 90's from the Disney studio, which more than a review could even be an essay for all the details, symbols and iconographies full of complexities within it that are shown to the audience so that everyone can analyze and keep what they want to keep (and it has one of the best villains in Disney animations). In addition, its soundtrack (which is always what I love to appreciate most about movies) I could define as majestic, with such meaningful lyrics full of the sounds of the bells of the impressive Notre Dame, and others where the gypsies give voice to this story. The songs have power and energy, and don't fall into the mawkishness that some Disney songs can sometimes be. I hope you enjoy it a lot, or if you have already seen it, allow yourself to remember and appreciate this movie. see you in a future post!

No puedo dejar de recomendarles ver este clásico de finales de los 90’s del estudio de Disney, de cual más que una reseña se podría hasta hacer un ensayo por todos los detalles, símbolos e iconografías llenas de complejidades dentro de ella que se muestran a la audiencia para que cada quien analice y se quede con lo que se quiera quedar (y cuenta con uno de los mejores villanos en las animaciones de Disney). Además su banda sonora (que siempre es lo que más me encanta apreciar de las películas) la podría definir como majestuosa, con letras tan significativas llenas de los sonidos de las campanas de la impresionante Notre Dame, y otras donde los gitanos dan voz a esta historia. Las canciones tienen potencia y energía, y no caen en lo empalagoso que pueden ser a veces algunas canciones de Disney. Espero que la disfruten mucho o que si ya la han visto, se permitan recordar y apreciar esta película. ¡Nos vemos en un próximo post!
