Scary Movie and its sequels are considered horror parodies, but for true cinephiles those are mostly associated with the word “horror” than “parody”. Any sense of horror is less cause by what people see on the screen and more with realisation that those films earned incredible amount of money at the box office despite not deserving it by any meaningful criteria. Scary Movie 2, 2001 film directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, is not an exception.

Like in the previous film, Wayans enjoyed support of his siblings – Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans – who wrote the script and repeated the roles of Ray Wilkins and Shorty Meeks. Most of the cast in previous film was brought back, together with their characters, despite being killed off. That included the nominal heroine Cindy Campbell (played by Anna Faris) who begins himself as college student trying to get over traumatic events depicted in previous film. She takes part in an experiment devised by Professor Oldman (played by Tim Curry), who wants to research paranormal activities in Hell House.

Like with so many Hollywood parodies, what goes for plot in this film is just an excuse for series on jokes that rely less on writers’ ingenuity or audience’s sense of humour and more on references on, mostly weak and forgettable films that were released few years earlier. While Scary Movie handled slasher films, Scary Movie 2 goes through slightly different route and spoofs ghost films like The Haunting and House on Haunted Hill, but inspiration among scriptwriting committee is quickly drained, so they resort to spoofing popular teen films and even television reality shows like Survivor. Obviously targetted toward teen audience, whose youth and attention span preclude anything older than two years, this film makes an exception with the opening that spoofs The Exorcist and features James Woods in very brief appearance (which apparently has cost producers 1 million US$). Woods is not only good in this role, but probably represents the only good thing in the whole film. But he can’t rescue this film from becoming embarrassing waste of time despite 82 minutes of running time, often spent in showing jokes about various bodily functions. Some might say that Wayans Brothers subconsciously wanted to say what they really thought of their work. Their refusal to take part in subsequent sequels, despite commercial success, could only strengthen such impression.
