It is never a good sign when a film is advertised as one thing and what viewers ultimately see on the screen is another. An example can be found in Sweet November, 2001 romantic comedy directed by Pat O’Connor.

The film represents a remake of eponymous (and relatively obscure) 1968 film starring Anthony Newley and Sandy Dennis. New version is set in San Francisco and begins when Nelson Moss (played by Keanu Reeves), successful and workaholic advertising executive meets Sara Deever (played by Charlize Theron), beautiful young woman who intrigues him with her eccentric behaviour. Sara has a habit of taking a man into her home for a month and using that as an opportunity to change his life for a better. After losing his job and girlfriend at the same time, Nelson reluctantly agrees to take part in Sara’s experiment. He moves in with here and is referred as “November”. Sara’s influence on Nelson proves to beneficial and he begins caring less about his work and more about enjoying life and helping people around him. At the same time he hopelessly falls in love with her and she falls in love with him. But the idyll, which is supposed to last only for a month, hides much darker truth about Sara.

Sweet November, despite being advertised as romantic comedy, is a film that actually could be better described as tearjerking melodrama, drowned in pathos and old fashioned sentimentality seldom seen in Hollywood since Titanic. That wouldn’t be a problem by itself if this film was made competently. Sadly, it wasn’t the case. When the audience realises what kind of film this is, it will going to be exposed to myriad of annoying cliches and the switch from what was supposed to be a comedy into drama is too abrupt and unconvincing. The cast doesn’t help either. Keanu Reeves had worked with Charlize Theron before and did a decent job in The Devil’s Advocate, but here he lacks chemistry and remains terribly wooden. Jason Isaacs, who plays Sara’s cross-dressing friend, is the only good thing in the film but his efforts aren’t enough to rescue Sweet November from becoming a waste of time.
