Modern films suggest that policemen with messy personal habits tend to have problems with following the rules and adhere to hierarchy. Protagonist of True Blue, 2001 crime thriller written and directed by J. S. Cardone, isn’t much different. Rembrandt “Remy” Macy (played by Tom Berenger) is police detective who likes to drink, smoke and abuse pills and dislikes regulation. After a narcotics raid ends with shooting, Remy is, as punishment, send to homicide squad. His first task is to establish identity of a woman whose hand was found wrapped in paper. Remy finds that the hand belonged to female city official whose attractive room mate Nikki (played by Lori Heuring) appears to know more about the whole affair than she is willing to admit. Remy gradually reveals intricate web of corruption, Chinese organised crime, prostitution and sadomasochism, while at same time being confronted by ghosts of his own past. The greatest impediment to his investigation happens to be Nikki, to whom he begins to feel attraction.

Made with low budget, True Blue represents routine but adequately made neo-noirish thriller. J. S. Cardone, who also produced the film, is prolific author of low budget films and he has built minor cult reputation with his previous work, low budget horror film The Forsaken. Here he had to deal not only with small budget, but rather predictable plot. He compensated that predictability by emphasising dark and melancholic atmosphere. True Blue also features scenes of sadomasochistic sex that are rather explicit for modern Hollywood standards and potentially unpleasant more sensitive set of viewers. The biggest asset of the film is Tom Berenger, grand actor who never shied away from appearing in low budget films and often elevating their quality as he does here, playing world weary protagonist with great ease. Although bloody finale with predictable plot twists hampers general impression, True Blue is still good enough way for fans of noirish thrillers to spend an hour and half of their time.
