By early 21st Century dramatic reconstructions of real life crime stories on US broadcast television became so sterile and predictable than the similar content looked refreshing simply by being made somewhere else. One of the works to benefit from such phenomenon was My Husband My Killer, 2001 Australian TV film directed by Peter Andrikidis.

The film is based on eponymous non-fiction book by Lindsay Sampson and Sandra Harvey. It deals with one of the most infamous murder cases of 1980s Australia involving Andrew Kalajzich (played by Martin Sacks), wealthy Sydney hotel owner who had some of country’s powerful politicians among his friends. In 1986 his wife Megan (played by Linda Cropper) gets shot to death while lying in bed with him, while Andrew miraculously survives apparent assassination attempt. Police investigators, led by Detective Sergeant Bob “Snake” Inkster (played by Colin Fliers), find many details of Kalajzich’s story suspect. Their inquires among Sydney criminal underworld lead to George Cannelis (played by Chris Haywood), man claiming to be hired by Kalajzich to kill his wife. But he also claims that he hadn’t got the nerve to actually carry out the killing so Inkster has to find someone else.

My Husband My Killer is well-made crime film that is in many ways better than similar products on US television. Due to Australian television standards that were more permissive in depictions of violence or nudity the film looks much more realistic. The acting is top notch, although Colin Fliers as lead detective is the only cast member easily recognisable by non-Australian audience. Near the ending My Husband My Killer starts to succumb to cliches, but this shouldn’t discourage fans of true crime stories to give this film a chance.
