A Trial Run
Gimmick? Or legit? What does overpriced hipster film have to offer?
I'm not a huge fan of gimmicks. But when I saw Five Below offering color film I had to try it. After all, the black and white wasn't too bad (and the same price if I recall correctly).
After paying the $5.55 for 10 exposures I noticed the label "ECN-2" and realized that I had no idea what I was going to do with that. It turns out the film is just repackaged old Kodak cinematic film and thus was covered in "Remjet". I had heard nightmares about remjet.
Concerned but undeterred, I loaded it up in the only camera I knew would properly expose the 100 ISO film, my Nikon N90.
I would like to be the crazy guy who carries a camera everywhere he goes. But that's not me, yet. So it took me two months and two events to finish this roll of "10" exposures.
Why the scare quotes? Well. In the Nikon that roll only works for 7 exposures. That comes out to roughly $0.79 per frame. Ouch. And while the color shift was less than expected after I figured out how to develop it in C41 (remove remjet with baking soda and adjust temps and times to compensate for contrast), I don't think the pictures are that good. Certainly not for all the work.
Lesson learned? Maybe. I bought two rolls, perhaps I can use the next one for double exposures and cut the price in half!
