It's Halloween, and today is a great day to watch Good Boy, a really good movie that seems to have been taken from those anecdotes and images circulating on the internet about animals being able to sense or see paranormal things, from drawings to videos of dogs barking at things that humans can't see, and from that premise they brought us this:

Todd's behavior becomes erratic, and his health deteriorates, suggesting he is falling under the influence of the house's dark force. The film focuses on Indy's unwavering loyalty, as he, unable to communicate verbally, must confront the supernatural entity in a desperate mission to protect his human companion from a danger only he can see. It is a supernatural horror story that highlights the profound bond between a man and his pet, making the dog the unsung hero.

The film establishes a very direct atmosphere of threat from the outset, showing shadows and figures, and employing camera angles that consistently remain at the eye level of the dog, Indy, immediately placing the viewer in a state of vulnerability and instinctive alertness. This perspective is key to the film's effective handling of suspense, which doesn't rely on cheap jump scares, but rather on the intelligent use of off-screen space; terror lurks around corners and in sounds that humans ignore, making the demonic presence feel oppressively. Paradoxically, the fact that the film is almost entirely devoid of dialogue, with only barks and whimpers, is its greatest emotional strength. The performance of the dog protagonist is masterful, conveying fear, confusion, and unwavering loyalty through gestures, glances, and postures, carrying the dramatic weight of the story. This would have been difficult with other types of protagonists, such as children, since they wouldn't have the communication barrier that exists between an animal and a human. Indy, being a dog, behaves differently in situations, initially placing himself on the front line against what he perceives as an alert or threat. However, this changes when he becomes the target of the entity, developing a less instinctive fear of something he doesn't understand and can't see as another dangerous animal, yet still protecting his companion.

La película establece una atmósfera de amenaza muy directa desde el comienzo mostrando sombras o figuras mas los ángulos de la cámara que se mantiene consistentemente a la altura de los ojos del perro, Indy, situando al espectador inmediatamente en un estado de vulnerabilidad y alerta instintiva. Esta perspectiva es clave para el Buen manejo del suspenso, el cual no se basa en sustos fáciles por jumpscares constantes, sino en el uso inteligente del fuera de campo; el terror acecha en las esquinas y en los sonidos que los humanos ignoran, haciendo sentir la presencia demoníaca de forma opresiva. La actuación del perro protagonista es magistral, transmitiendo miedo, confusión y una lealtad inquebrantable a través de gestos, miradas y posturas, llevando el peso dramático de la historia, algo que era difícil con otro tipo de protagonista como niños ya que no tendrían esa barrera de comunicación que tiene un animal con un humano o el comportamiento Indy al ser un perro se comporta ante las situación de manera diferente poniéndose en la primera línea contra algo que considera una alerta o amenaza pero que va cambiando cuando empieza a ser objetivo del ente desarrollando un temor menos instintivo al algo que no entiende y no puede ver como otro animal peligroso pero igual protegiendo a su compañero.

On a visual and symbolic level, the film has many things I like and find interesting, such as the visual device of the faceless (covered) or out-of-focus humans, especially Todd, Indy's owner. This is crucial and multifaceted. First, it reinforces the dog's perspective, for whom the human face is often out of focus or not the primary source of information (he prioritizes smell and sound). Second, it introduces an element of pareidolia in the shadows and corners, where figures barely suggested by the viewer's point of view become threatening, or could simply be a shadow seen by Indy or the viewer. Thematically, the film operates as a metaphor for illness and dogs' ability to sense these illnesses or the decline of their owners. Indy doesn't simply see a ghost; he perceives Todd's physical and mental deterioration as something consuming him, a danger that must be faced with unconditional love. This transforms the horror into a heartbreaking chronicle about the inevitability of loss and the profound sacrifice a Good boy is willing to make for the person he loves.

A nivel visual y simbólico la película tiene muchas cosas que me gusta y me resultan interesante como: el recurso visual de los Humanos sin rostro (caras tapadas) o desenfocadas, especialmente el de Todd, el dueño de Indy, es crucial y multifacético. Primero, refuerza la perspectiva del perro, para quien el rostro humano a menudo queda fuera de foco o no es la fuente primaria de información (prioriza el olfato y el sonido). Good Boy as a horror film is great entertainment for passing the time, but it's also a mental exercise in what animals perceive, potentially leaving you unsettled or with goosebumps the next time your dog barks or suddenly becomes defensive without you being able to hear or understand why. It can also go deeper and remind you of the fear of illnesses and ailments that you or a loved one might begin to suffer from—a relentless and often unavoidable entity that stalks us and is a thousand times worse than any horror movie or creature in the dark.

Good boy como película de terror como entretenimiento es muy buena para pasar el rato pero también lo es como un ejercicio mental de lo que perciben los animales pudiendo dejarte algo inquieto o con la piel de gallina la próxima vez que tu perro ladre o se ponga a la defensiva de un momento a otro sin que tu pudieras escuchar o entender la razón de porque se puso así, o ir mas profundo y recordarte el miedo a las enfermedades y padecimientos que tu o un ser querido pueden empezar a sufrir un ente incesante y muchas veces inevitable que nos acecha y que es mil veces peor que cualquier película de terror o ser en la oscuridad.
