The Creator: What could have been but wasn't. [Review] [ENG+ESP]

Greetings lovers of good cinema! Today I want to give you my humble opinion about the movie The Creator. This work directed by Gareth Edwards was released on September 29th of this year. And before I start giving my opinion about the film I would like to clarify that, personally, regardless of what the overall rating of a film is, I think what defines whether it was worth it or not was how much it grossed and this film with $80 million budget already grossed over $103 million. I say this because lately I have noticed that a lot of movies get reviews that are not commensurate with their quality. And don't get me wrong, my intention is not to cause controversy, but the facts confirm what I say. The Nun 2 is a movie that I personally hate, however, it grossed much more than double its budget, so it is considered a box office success. With this I want you to understand that popular reviews and specialized critics have nothing to do with it, so don't go by the rankings that appear on the internet.

¡Saludos amantes del buen cine! El día de hoy quiero darles mi humilde opinión sobre la película The Creator. Esta obra dirigida por Gareth Edwards fue estrenada el 29 de septiembre de este año. Y antes de comenzar a dar mi opinión sobre el filme me gustaría aclarar que, en lo personal, independientemente de cuál sea la clasificación general de una película, creo que lo que define si valió la pena o no fue cuanto recaudó y esta película con $80 millones de presupuesto ya recaudo más $103 millones. Digo esto porque últimamente me he percatado que muchas películas obtienen una crítica que no va acorde con su calidad. Y no me malinterpreten, pues mi intención no es causar polémica, pero los hechos confirman lo que digo. La Monja 2 es una película que personalmente odio, sin embargo, recaudó mucho más del doble de su presupuesto, por lo tal se considera un éxito en taquilla. Con esto quiero darles a entender que las reseñas populares y la crítica especializada no tienen nada que ver, así que no se guíen por los rankings que aparecen en internet.

The director responsible for Rogue One of the Star Wars saga takes another big step forward with The Creator. This sci-fi film, whose biggest weakness is having a rather questionable script, has a great story that offers endless possibilities. An emotional story in a post-apocalyptic future where there is a rivalry between humans and artificial intelligence, leading to a war between North America and Asia. At first it comes to feel a bit generic and artificial, but it gets a lot better as it progresses. The special effects and action scenes are good enough to keep your attention on the screen. The conflict between humans and robots generates some interest in how the artificial intelligence manages to be as close to a real human being as possible because of the feelings it develops. While the real humans seem to become increasingly dehumanized, unaware that they have managed to create beings that can possess feelings and a soul. The film comes to feel like something out of the literature of Isaac Asimov or other science fiction authors, but the concept is noticeably heavily inspired by anime. Aside from being post-apocalyptic, it comes to feel like a cyberpunk film at times.

El director responsable de Rogue One de la saga Star Wars da un nuevo gran paso con The Creator. Esta película de ciencia ficción, cuya mayor debilidad es tener un guion bastante cuestionable, posee una historia genial que ofrece un sinfín de posibilidades. Una historia emotiva en un futuro postapocalíptico donde existe una rivalidad entre el ser humano y la inteligencia artificial, dando lugar a una guerra entre Norteamérica y Asia. Al principio llega a sentirse algo genérica y artificial, pero mejora bastante a medida que avanza. Los efectos especiales y las escenas de acción son lo suficientemente buenos para seguir manteniendo la atención en la pantalla. El conflicto entre los humanos y robots genera un cierto interés en como la inteligencia artificial logra ser lo más cercano a un ser humano real por los sentimientos que desarrolla. Mientras que los humanos reales parecen deshumanizarse cada vez más, ignorando que han logrado crear seres que pueden poseer sentimientos y un alma. La película llega a sentirse como algo sacado de la literatura de Isaac Asimov o de otros autores de ciencia ficción, pero el concepto se nota que está fuertemente inspirado en el anime. Aparte de ser postapocalíptica, llega a sentirse como una película ciberpunk en algunos momentos.

It is clear that The Creator, takes advantage of the gap left by Terminator, by not showing us the long awaited war between machines with artificial intelligence and humans, to control the planet and see who extinguishes whom. The central theme is machines and feelings. And the performance of the girl protagonist is really excellent. At first and almost from the beginning, the movie makes us doubt which side we should be on, until she appears. I have read many comments saying that nothing is explained about her and that her story is complicated to understand, I think they did it on purpose, as it lets me analyze this thoroughly. As you go through the movie the story of the past becomes more detailed, if they say it is not understood they probably fell asleep during the course of the movie, because her story is made clear. It is presented to us as a weapon at the beginning, but then it is discovered that it has powers, they tell us how they created it and for what purpose they did it. The story of the protagonist is not told in the same way, at the beginning he is a man with a happy life and then we move to another time, where he has another life and happiness has left his face.

Está claro que The Creator, aprovecha el hueco dejado por Terminator, al no mostrarnos la tan espera guerra entre máquinas con inteligencia artificial y los humanos, por controlar al planeta y ver quién extingue a quién. El tema central son las máquinas y los sentimientos. Y la actuación de la niña protagonista es realmente excelente. Al principio y casi desde el inicio, la película nos hace dudar de qué lado debemos estar, hasta que aparece ella. He leído muchos comentarios que dicen que no se explica nada de ella y que su historia es complicada de entender, yo creo que lo hicieron a propósito, ya que me deja analizar a fondo esto. A medida que avanzas en la película la historia del pasado se detalla más, si dicen que no se entiende seguramente se durmieron en el transcurso de la película, porque su historia es aclarada. Nos la presentan como un arma al principio, pero luego se descubre que tiene poderes, nos cuentan como la crearon y con qué finalidad lo hicieron. La historia del protagonista no las cuenta de la misma forma, al principio es un hombre con una vida feliz y luego, pasamos a otra época, donde tiene otra vida y ya la felicidad abandono su rostro.

Honestly, I have divided opinions, since I consider that they made an effort, but it wasn't enough. The soundtrack is acceptable, not memorable, but it's pretty good. The special effects and CGI were its strongest point and I really liked them a lot. After seeing so many bad effects in several movies this year, I didn't think I would find something of quality in this one, but I was surprised. Of course, not everything is rosy and the script makes the movie feel a bit slow, and I'm not saying that because of the length in general. What happens is that taking into account the great historical niche in which the plot develops, maybe they should have focused a little more on the script.

Sinceramente, tengo opiniones divididas, ya que considero que se esforzaron, pero no fue suficiente. La banda sonora es aceptable, no memorable, pero es bastante buena. Los efectos especiales y el CGI fuero su punto más fuerte y de verdad que me gustaron mucho. Luego de ver tantos malos efectos en varias películas de este año, no pensé encontrarme algo de calidad en esta, pero me sorprendieron. Claro que no todo es color de rosa y es que el guion hace que la película se sienta algo lenta y no lo digo por la duración en general. Lo que sucede es que teniendo en cuenta el gran nicho histórico en el cual se desarrolla la trama, quizás debieron enfocarse un poco más en el guion.
