"Antenas criollas" para la 4G en Cuba (es/en)

Mi mamá vive a siete kilómetros de la ciudad de Pinar del Río, provincia en la que vivo. La misma distancia donde se encuentra la torre más grande de telecomunicaciones de la compañía ETECSA, monopolio de las comunicaciones en Cuba. A pesar de que para esa zona han ido colocando otras radiobases, supuestamente para mejorar las telecomunicaciones, cuando no hay corriente es como si no estuvieran, ya que ninguna de ellas cuenta con respaldo energético.

Por este motivo se hace bien difícil establecer una comunicación decente entre dos personas, mucho menos conectarse a internet cuando no hay corriente por los alrededores. Esto no solo sucede en donde vive mi mamá, es generalizado para todo lugar que no sea sitio estratégico de prioridad energética, porque recuerden que estamos en crisis. Pero el cubano es una fiera inventando, así que comenzó a regarse la bola en redes sociales de unas milagrosas antenas, de fabricación artesanal que servían para agarrar la poca señal que llega a estos lugares apartados.

Estas "antenas criollas" se pueden hacer en casa, con las medidas correctas, los materiales correctos y el ingenio de cada quien. Sin embargo, a veces uno, por querer hacer algo con sus propias manos, y ahorrarse dinero, termina perdiendo tiempo y dinero invertido. Así que decidimos comprar una de estas "antenas criollas" ya elaboradas, para no estar en el invento. Mi hermano, que vive en Venezuela, me dió la tarea de encargar una de estas para ponérsela a mi mamá en sus casa.

El tío de Mariolis se dedica a estas cosas, él es carpintero, sin embargo lleva un tiempo elevorando estas antenas y ya tiene experiencia en este campo. Por lo que fue con él que mandamos hacer la antena de mi mamá. La primera vez que ví una de estas antenas, como decimos en el buen cubano "de frente", fue en casa de la abuela de Mariolis, dónde tienen una puesta para agarrar la conexión y la hizo precisamente su tío. Por esa carretera es muy normal ver una de estas antenas en casi todas las cosas.

La antena estuvo en menos de una semana, el tío de Mariolis estaba avisando al tercer día de que podíamos ir a recogerla. Por suerte surgió un viaje para allá y se aprovechó para traerla. Con la antena aquí en la casa hablé con mi papá, para que me ayudara a colocarle la antena en casa de mi mamá, que ya tenía un bara de caña brava bien larga para usarla de torre. Pero también necesitábamos unos alambres para agarrar aquella bara y hacerle tipo unos tensores para evitar los movimientos provocados por el viento.

Lo primero fue localizar el lugar donde podríamos poner la antena, aunque ya yo tenía claro dónde la iba a fijar. Usamos una coa para abrir un hueco en la tierra donde enterrar aquel armatoste de vara de más de 10 metros de largo. Precisamente esa es la altura que deben tener para poder agarrar bien la señal y que funcionen correctamente.

Una vez abierto el hueco en la tierra, amarramos bien fuerte la antena de discos; en la parte que iba elevada de la caña brava, la colocamos en dirección a la torre que se encuentra en el punto más elevado de la ciudad, y luego la enterramos dándole buen pisón para que quedara fuerte. Luego, con unos alambres de púas como los que se ponen en los cercados para limitar el acceso, creamos unos tensores para asegurar la torre rústica que habíamos elevado y así protegerla del viento.

Con unas cabillas hicimos unos garfios para que se agarraran a la placa del techo y así se tensara bien. Luego de colocar los amarres, ya teníamos el trabajo prácticamente terminado, y solo faltaba comprobar que funcionaba correctamente. Puse mi teléfono recostado en la base rústica donde se supone que va y enseguida ocurrió la magia: el teléfono comenzó a agarrar conexión 4G, algo que antes era prácticamente imposible allí, de no ser con estas antenas.

Pero un rato después sucedió algo gracioso, y es que el teléfono de mi mamá es un Spark Go y estos terminales tienen la antena por encima; por tanto, había que virar el teléfono boca abajo para que agarrara señal. Porque esta base tiene un alambre que encima pones el teléfono y le transmite al teléfono la señal que los discos de la antena captaron allá arriba y que baja por el cable coaxial.

Mi mamá ahora puede hacer una llamada normal, sin que se le caiga o se demore tanto en agarrar cobertura, incluso chatear por WhatsApp conectada a internet. Estas antenas no solo mejoran la conectividad, sino que encarnan la creatividad cubana frente a las adversidades. These "homemade antennas" can be made at home, with the right measurements, the right materials and a little ingenuity. However, sometimes, in wanting to do something with your own hands and save money, you end up wasting time and money. So we decided to buy one of these ready-made "homemade antennas" to avoid having to invent something ourselves. My brother, who lives in Venezuela, gave me the task of ordering one of these for my mother to put in her house.

Mariolis' uncle is involved in this kind of thing; he is a carpenter, but he has been making these antennas for some time and already has experience in this field. So it was him we asked to make my mother's antenna. The first time I saw one of these antennas, as we say in Cuba, "up close," was at Mariolis' grandmother's house, where they have one set up to get a connection, and it was made by her uncle. Along that road, it's very common to see one of these antennas on almost everything.

The antenna was ready in less than a week, and Mariolis' uncle let us know on the third day that we could come and pick it up. Luckily, we had a trip planned there and took the opportunity to bring it back with us. With the antenna here at home, I spoke to my dad, asking him to help me install it at my mum's house, where we already had a long piece of cane to use as a tower. But we also needed some wires to attach to the pole and make some tensioners to prevent it from moving in the wind.

The first thing was to find a place to put the antenna, although I already knew where I was going to put it. We used a hoe to dig a hole in the ground to bury the 10-metre-long pole. That is precisely the height they need to be in order to pick up the signal properly and work correctly.

Once the hole in the ground was dug, we tied the disc antenna securely to the raised part of the cane, pointing it towards the tower at the highest point in the city, and then buried it, tamping it down well so that it would be sturdy. Then, using barbed wire like the kind used on fences to restrict access, we created some tensioners to secure the rustic tower we had erected and thus protect it from the wind.

We made some hooks out of rebar so that they could be attached to the roof plate and thus be properly tensioned. After attaching the fasteners, the job was practically done, and all that remained was to check that it was working properly. I placed my phone on the rustic base where it was supposed to go, and immediately the magic happened: the phone started to pick up a 4G connection, something that was practically impossible there before, except with these antennas.

But a little while later, something funny happened. My mum's phone is a Spark Go, and these handsets have the antenna on top, so she had to turn the phone upside down to get a signal. This is because the base has a wire that you place the phone on, which transmits the signal that the antenna discs picked up up there and sent down the coaxial cable to the phone.

My mum can now make a normal call without it dropping or taking so long to get coverage, and she can even chat on WhatsApp connected to the internet. These antennas not only improve connectivity, but also embody Cuban creativity in the face of adversity.
