The return of the Avatar has stirred up a lot of excitement and raised high expectations, clearly demonstrating the success of this adaptation – and it’s worth noting that this second instalment could be considered a step up on the first. Personally, I absolutely loved this new season, despite the disappointment of it having just seven episodes – a run very similar to that of the previous season.

The new season stands out in its own right, as it shows us the events that took place during the Avatar and his friends’ journey through the “Earth Kingdom”. It stays true to the storyline of the original Nickelodeon animated series, which this time concludes by focusing on the search for an earthbending master for Aang – a detail that fans of the series ended up appreciating.

There’s no denying that this is a season that truly excels in terms of maturity, ambition and visual spectacle. Although, between us, when it comes to a live-action adaptation of a much-loved animated classic like Avatar, the minor limitations of sticking closely to the source material are noticeable – though we all appreciate the faithfulness to the original cartoon.

The series stands out for capturing the charm of the original animation, making use of eye-catching costume designs, dreamlike locations such as the spectacular ‘Ba Sing Se’, and all these skilfully rendered contrasts between the wealth and the oppression suffered by its inhabitants. But without a doubt, the cast also holds its own, featuring Dallas Liu as Zuko and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh; this duo remains among the very best thanks to their exceptional chemistry.

Elizabeth Yu as Azula, Gordon Cormier (Aang) and Kiawentiio (Katara) are vastly improved, each character possessing their own distinctive quirks, making it feel as though you’re in the presence of the animated characters themselves. Although there will always be those who aren’t quite as taken with it, these are the risks involved with a live-action adaptation.

For my part, my only complaint is that I’m left wanting much more of the story. Seven episodes weren’t enough, and we’ll have to wait for a third series which, from what I’ve been able to find out, might premiere in the summer or autumn of 2027.

We can surely expect greater maturity, large-scale battles and a spectacular finale that delves into the emotional depths of all the characters. “Avatar: The Last Airbender” may not be perfect, but creatively it does maintain the expected upward trajectory, and what could undoubtedly be a fitting finale that fans of the animated series will remember.
