Hola familia cinéfila, espero que se encuentren bien. Hace unos días estuve viendo una película de terror, que me pareció bastante interesante. Por lo que les quise traer mi opinión de la cinta Drácula: Mar de Sangre (The Last Voyage of the Demeter). Dirigida por André Øvredal, se estrenó en el año 2023 y no es más que un thriller de terror que está basada en una adaptación cinematográfica de la novela de Bram Stoker de 1897, Drácula: el capítulo “El Diario del Capitán”. La película nos narra, mediante el uso del lenguaje visual, la travesía del barco mercante Deméter, el cual transportaba un misterioso cargamento de 24 cajas de madera, desde los Cárpatos hasta Londres.

Hello cinephile family, I hope you are well. A few days ago I was watching a horror movie, which I found quite interesting. So I wanted to bring you my opinion of the film Dracula: Sea of Blood (The Last Voyage of the Demeter). Directed by André Øvredal, it was released in the year 2023 and is nothing more than a horror thriller that is based on a film adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, Dracula: The Captain's Diary chapter. The film narrates, through the use of visual language, the voyage of the merchant ship Demeter, which was carrying a mysterious cargo of 24 crates of wood, from the Carpathian Mountains to London.

Todo comienza en un viaje rutinario de la tripulación del Deméter, liderada por el capitán Elliot (Liam Cunningham) y su primer oficial Wojchek (David Dastmalchian). Entre ellos se destaca oportunamente Clemens (Corey Hawkins), un médico afrobritánico que se une al viaje, y Anna (Aisling Franciosi), una polizona que guarda secretos ligados al cargamento aportando su dosis de misterio a la película. La tripulación pretendía recoger la mercancía y regresar a casa, pero se convierte en una pesadilla cuando descubren que, en la bodega del barco, transporta al mismísimo Conde Drácula.

It all begins on a routine voyage for the crew of the Demeter, led by Captain Elliot (Liam Cunningham) and his first mate Wojchek (David Dastmalchian). Among them are timely standouts Clemens (Corey Hawkins), an Afro-British doctor who joins the voyage, and Anna (Aisling Franciosi), a stowaway who holds secrets linked to the cargo bringing her dose of mystery to the film. The crew intended to pick up the cargo and return home, but it turns into a nightmare when they discover that, in the ship's hold, they are carrying Count Dracula himself.

Confieso que no me esperaba esta historia de vampiros, mucho menos desde un barco, pero la historia está contada de una manera tan genial, que tal parece que somos parte de esta tripulación inmersa en el misterioso escenario de mar abierto. Aunque la película tiene ese peso de una obra literaria, dándole ese poder dramático, considero que podía habernos brindado mucho más terror a la trama. A medida que el barco avanza, los sucesos extraños y desapariciones, marcan las noches, revelando poco a poco, los detalles de la presencia de un vampiro sediento de sangre.

I confess that I was not expecting this vampire story, much less from a ship, but the story is told in such a great way, that we seem to be part of this crew immersed in the mysterious scenery of the open sea. Although the film has that weight of a literary work, giving it that dramatic power, I feel that it could have given us much more terror to the plot. As the ship progresses, strange occurrences and disappearances mark the nights, revealing little by little the details of the presence of a bloodthirsty vampire.

La película visualmente está bien, nos muestra un barco a la antigua, de madera, que con el tiempo se va volviendo más espeluznante en cada caer de la noche cuando comienzan los sucesos de terror. Sin embargo, es el guion quien no logra una dinámica que supere lo superficial y lastimosamente cae en un patrón repetitivo de cada noche Drácula atacando. Mientras que durante el día, la tripulación tiene que lidiar con las consecuencias de su inminente presencia en el barco. Esta fórmula le opacando lentamente el suspenso inicial de la película, haciendo que la segunda mitad se sienta predecible y cansona.

Visually, the film is fine, showing us an old-fashioned wooden ship that becomes creepier with each nightfall as the terrifying events begin. However, it is the script that fails to achieve a dynamic that goes beyond the superficial and unfortunately falls into a repetitive pattern of Dracula attacking every night. While during the day, the crew has to deal with the consequences of his impending presence on the ship. This formula slowly dulls the film's initial suspense, making the second half feel predictable and tiresome.

A pesar de todo esto, no deja de ser un intento valiente por revivir este mito inmortal de Drácula, todo un clásico del cine y la literatura. En el final de la película se nos deja caer la posibilidad de prepararse una secuela, aunque la historia sin un cierre satisfactorio y como que desencanta un poco. Los que se aventuren a ver Drácula: Mar de Sangre, les aviso que no estamos ante una mega producción que nos ofrezca una experiencia visualmente impactante. Sin embargo, es entretenida que llega con una ambientación gótica, tratando de atraer con un claro enfoque en el horror para los fans del género.

Despite all this, it is still a brave attempt to revive the immortal myth of Dracula, a classic of cinema and literature. At the end of the film we are left with the possibility of preparing a sequel, although the story without a satisfactory closure and kind of disenchants a little. For those who venture to see Dracula: Sea of Blood, be warned that this is not a mega-production that offers a visually stunning experience. However, it is entertaining and comes with a gothic setting, trying to appeal with a clear focus on horror for fans of the genre.
