Amigos y curiosos del buen cine y la buena animación. Nuestra nave sigue rumbo a los 90 una década que dejó una estela imborrable en la forma en que vemos y sentimos los dibujos animados. Hoy me puse a pensar en otros dibujos animados de los 90s y en cómo se sienten los cambios en la creación y la narrativa de los mismos lo que nos recuerda por qué amábamos esas series. Y aquí tengo una pregunta seria y que podría definir lo actual con lo antiguo ¿Qué nos enseñaron de verdad esos años y qué permanece en la cultura actual?

Friends and fans of good cinema and animation. Our ship continues on course for the 90s, a decade that left an indelible mark on the way we see and feel cartoons. Today, I started thinking about other cartoons from the 90s and how the changes in their creation and narrative make us feel, reminding us why we loved those series. And here I have a serious question that could define the present with the past: What did those years really teach us, and what remains in today's culture?

La travesía por los 90s no es solo nostalgia; es una exploración de cómo una forma de arte captura quiénes somos y hacia dónde queremos ir. Por ejemplo, mencioné en mi anterior publicación a los Súper Sónicos la cual no es exactamente de los 90 más bien es mucho más vieja. Este dibujo animado fue creado por la franquicia de Hanna-Barbera en los 60 y para quienes conocimos esta familia fácilmente sabríamos que fue la contraparte futurista de Los Picapiedra. Una familia vivía en Edad de Piedra y la otra, vivía en el año 2050 o por ahí lo cual ya no se siente tan lejano.

The journey through the 90s isn't just nostalgia; it's an exploration of how an art form captures who we are and where we want to go. For example, in my previous post, I mentioned The Super Sonics, which isn't exactly from the 90s but is much older. This cartoon was created by the Hanna-Barbera franchise in the 60s, and those of us who knew this family would easily recognize it as the futuristic counterpart to The Flintstones. One family lived in the Stone Age and the other lived in the year 2050 or thereabouts, which no longer feels so far away.

Uno de los datos más curiosos de los Super Sónicos es que podríamos considerarlos unos profetas a aquellos que crearon a la gran familia del futuro. ¿Y acaso no? Hoy muchas de esas tecnologías que veíamos de niño y tan lejos ya está con nosotros desde hace unos cuantos años atrás. Por ejemplo: las videollamadas, las consultas médicas en línea (acción que nos hace referencia al covid19) los Relojes inteligentes, las mismas pantallas planas y aunque no tenemos en casa una Robotina, ya existen aspiradores robóticas que hacen el trabajo por nosotros y bueno, aunque no he visto la noticia de algún carro en el comercio que vuele para como está evolucionando todo no creo que tarde mucho en llegar.

One of the most curious facts about the Super Sonics is that we could consider those who created the great family of the future to be prophets. And why not? Today, many of the technologies we saw as children and thought were so far away have been with us for several years now. For example: video calls, online medical consultations (which brings us back to COVID-19), smart watches, flat screens, and although we don't have a Robotina at home, there are already robotic vacuum cleaners that do the work for us. And well, although I haven't seen any news about flying cars on the market, given how everything is evolving, I don't think it will be long before they arrive.

Y como creo y estoy seguro de que lo que llamó más a la atención sobre este tema fue mi opinión y la de ustedes sobre las series de los 90. Aquellos dibujos animados que combinaron aventura, valores de amistad y coraje, a veces con dosis de fantasía y acción aquí les vas otra de mis sinceras opiniones. No creo que todas las nuevas series no cuenten con nada de lo nombrado solo que hoy en día tienden a incorporar e intensamente los temas sociales y de identidad de forma más explícita, buscando representación y diversidad sin perder el ¨humor¨ pero acá repito algo que dije en mi anterior post, no veo a mi hija riendo como cuando le pongo Tom y Jerry, El Laboratorio de Dexter o Fenomenoide. Creo que definitivamente el reto es equilibrar todas estas acciones con un mensaje más divertido para los niños.

And since I believe and am sure that what attracted the most attention on this topic was my opinion and yours about the series from the 90s, those cartoons that combined adventure, values of friendship, and courage, sometimes with doses of fantasy and action, here's another of my sincere opinions. I don't think that all the new series lack any of the above, but nowadays they tend to incorporate social and identity issues more explicitly, seeking representation and diversity without losing the “humor.” But here I repeat something I said in my previous post: I don't see my daughter laughing like she does when I put on Tom and Jerry, Dexter's Laboratory, or Phenomenoid. I think the challenge is definitely to balance all these actions with a more entertaining message for children.

Hoy deseo con ansias volver a esos domingos cuando despertaba más temprano que para ir a la escuela y eso, solo para aprovechar que el tv estaba sola y ver por ejemplo a Bugs bunny y a sus amigos, a Garfield y sus amigos de la granja o disfrutar de la pandilla de Don gato. Todo eso antes de que mi padre se levantara a ver MacGyver ja ja ja… Y repito, no veo la misma emoción con esta nueva generación. ¿Será que mucha tecnología ha convertido a esta generación en seres más sensibles? No sé ¿qué dicen ustedes?

Today, I long to return to those Sundays when I woke up earlier than I needed to for school, just to take advantage of the fact that the TV was on and watch Bugs Bunny and his friends, Garfield and his farm friends, or enjoy the Don Gato gang. All that before my father got up to watch MacGyver, ha ha ha... And I repeat, I don't see the same excitement with this new generation. Could it be that all this technology has made this generation more sensitive? I don't know. What do you think?
