Hace unos días terminé de ver Margo y posteriormente al culminarla empezamos a ver The Boroughs, la nueva serie de Netflix producida por los hermanos Duffer que estaba rodando mucho la información en la red sobre esta serie lo que después de leer opiniones tan divididas llegué con expectativas neutrales y bueno, creo que salí igual. La serie no me pareció tan mala ni tan buena, la trama es bastante predecible aunque las actuaciones de cada uno de los actores estuvieron excelentes en sus papeles. Aunque no puedo negar que en ocasiones me reía ver como unos abuelos se convertían en una rebelión de jubilados.

A few days ago, I finished watching ¨Margo¨, and right after that, we started watching ¨The Boroughs¨, the new Netflix series produced by the Duffer brothers. There was a lot of buzz online about this show, and after reading such mixed reviews, I went in with neutral expectations and well, I think I came away feeling the same way. I didn’t think the series was that bad or that good; the plot is pretty predictable, although the performances by each of the actors were excellent in their roles. Though I can’t deny that at times I laughed watching a group of grandparents turn into a rebellion of retirees.

Y digo predecible porque si has visto al menos un par de series de ciencia ficción en tu vida y además de eso eres un fanático de las mismas, vas a adivinar el 90% de los giros dado que la estructura como digo, es bastante predecible, los clichés del género están ahí y en varios momentos sentí que ya sabía exactamente hacia dónde se dirigía la historia. La verdad es que cuando leí que era como ver Stranger things pero sin Once, Will, Lucas y sus amigos. Literalmente es ver a unos abuelos convertirse en héroes y lograr salvar el mundo.

And I say predictable because if you’ve watched at least a couple of sci-fi series in your life and are also a fan of the genre, you’ll guess 90% of the plot twists since, as I said, the structure is pretty predictable; the genre’s clichés are all there, and at several points I felt like I already knew exactly where the story was headed. The truth is, when I read that it was like watching Stranger Things but without Eleven, Will, Lucas, and their friends. It’s literally watching a bunch of grandparents become heroes and manage to save the world.

Los actores aun a pesar de que para mí tuvieron una actuación aceptable los mismos estuvieron presos en una narración muy establecida y con tramas en ocasiones sin sentido. Supongo que la serie quiso inclinarse un poco hacia la comedia porque no cabe duda que en ocasiones eso era lo que provocaba, risa. Nos encontramos con actores como Alfred Molina y Geena Davis quienes lideran un elenco con una química entre ellos es muy genuina y logran transmitir esa mezcla de vulnerabilidad, sabiduría y rebeldía que solo los años pueden dar.

Even though I thought the actors gave acceptable performances, they were constrained by a very formulaic narrative and plots that sometimes made no sense. I suppose the series wanted to lean a bit toward comedy because there’s no doubt that at times that’s exactly what it did: make us laugh. We have actors like Alfred Molina and Geena Davis leading a cast with very genuine chemistry between them, and they manage to convey that blend of vulnerability, wisdom, and rebelliousness that only the years can bring.

Ahora si hablamos un poco sobre el estilo de la serie, la acertada elección de colores y fotografías, la verdad es que estuvo muy amateur o sea, después de que los hermanos Duffer nos regalaran Stranger things no sé qué les paso con este nuevo trabajo. La verdad es que sin duda The Boroughs no es la serie del año, pero tampoco merece el hate que ha recibido pues es un thriller de ciencia ficción correcto con un elenco excepcional que logra sostener una historia predecible así que podría decir que si buscas algo ligero, con buenas actuaciones y no te molesta saber lo que viene, darle una oportunidad a esta serie no estaría nada mal.

Now, if we talk a little about the show’s style, the color palette, and cinematography, the truth is that it felt very amateurish. I mean, after the Duffer brothers gave us ¨Stranger Things¨, I don’t know what happened with this new project. The truth is, The Boroughs is definitely not the series of the year, but it doesn’t deserve the hate it’s received either, since it’s a decent sci-fi thriller with an exceptional cast that manages to carry a predictable story. So I’d say that if you’re looking for something light, with good performances, and you don’t mind knowing what’s coming, giving this series a chance wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.
