Hoy quiero hablarles de una serie que descubrí hace unas semanas y que se ha convertido en el plan perfecto de mis noches junto a mi esposa. Bueno, siempre y cuando no haya un buen partido de fútbol porque de verdad que este Mundial las sorpresas no dejan de llegar pero en fin, no vengo hablar de futbol ja ja ja Pero sí, si hay futbol toca detener esta serie de la que jamás había escuchado. La serie lleva por nombre The Neighborhood o El Vecindario en español. En alguna otra traducción que hice del nombre fue El Barrio.

Today I want to tell you about a series I discovered a few weeks ago that has become the perfect way to spend my evenings with my wife. Well, as long as there isn’t a good soccer game on because honestly, this World Cup just keeps throwing up surprises but anyway, I’m not here to talk about soccer, ha ha ha. But yeah, if there’s soccer on, we have to put this series on hold a series I’d never even heard of before. The series is called The Neighborhood or El Vecindario in Spanish. In another translation I did of the title, it was El Barrio.

Les confieso que tenemos ya casi una semana que paramos esta serie pues consideramos que no estamos para reir aunque gracias a Dios siempre consigo sacar la sonrisa en casa. Pero si están buscando una comedia que no solo los haga reír, sino que también nos regala mensajes muy bonitos en cada episodio. La historia comienza con la mudanza obligatoria de la familia Johnson la cual es una familia súper optimistas y muy amable solo que hay un problema, la familia llega a un barrio totalmente afroamericano en Los Ángeles. Bueno, es que la familia Johnson son una familia blanca y aquí es donde digo que entramos es un terreno fértil para el choque cultural y el buen humor.

I have to admit that we’ve put this series on hold for almost a week now because we feel like we’re not in the mood to laugh though, thank God, I always manage to bring a smile to our faces at home. But if you’re looking for a comedy that not only makes you laugh but also delivers beautiful messages in every episode… The story begins with the Johnson family’s forced move. They’re a super optimistic and very kind family but there’s just one problem: they end up in a predominantly African American neighborhood in Los Angeles. Well, the thing is, the Johnsons are a white family, and this is where I’d say we’re entering fertile ground for cultural clashes and good humor.

Tengo mis personajes favoritos ja ja ja… Y me rio porque si la han visto al saber que me encanta la actuación de Cedric the Entertainer como Calvin Butler un hombre afroamericano con sus creencias y su cultura muy bien definida por así decirlo, un hombre de opiniones firmes. Su esposa Tina interpretada por Tichina Arnold es otra de mis actuaciones y personajes favoritos. Los Johnson son una familia blanca que la verdad, es bastante intensa pero la parte buena empieza cuando estas dos familias empiezan a ser vecinos y poco a poco conectando.

I have my favorite characters, ha ha ha… And I’m laughing because if you’ve seen it, you know I love Cedric the Entertainer’s performance as Calvin Butler an African American man with very well-defined beliefs and culture, so to speak, a man of strong opinions. His wife Tina, played by Tichina Arnold, is another one of my favorite performances and characters. The Johnsons are a white family who, to be honest, are pretty intense, but the good part starts when these two families become neighbors and gradually start to connect.

Claro como todos nuevos vecinos y nuevos en un vecindario afroamericano a los Johnson lo que le viene es una montaña rusa de malentendidos, adaptación y, sobre todo, el nacimiento de una amistad inquebrantable entre dos mundos que parecían opuestos. Y esta es la parte que sin duda a mí más me atrae y para empezar, como toda producción, la serie tiene sus altos y bajos en cuanto a ritmo y episodios pero donde realmente brilla es en su capacidad para abordar temas complejos como el racismo y los prejuicios sin caer en el discurso denso o moralista. Ese contraste de humor entre ambas familias hace que los Butler y los Johnson llegan a ser unos amigos.

Of course, like all new neighbors and newcomers to an African American neighborhood the Johnsons are in for a roller coaster ride of misunderstandings, adjustment, and, above all, the birth of an unbreakable friendship between two worlds that seemed polar opposites. And this is the part that undoubtedly appeals to me the most. To start with, like any production, the series has its ups and downs in terms of pacing and episodes, but where it really shines is in its ability to tackle complex issues like racism and prejudice without resorting to heavy-handed or moralizing dialogue. That contrast in humor between the two families is what ultimately brings the Butlers and the Johnsons together as friends.

Para mi esposa y para mí esta serie se ha vuelto ese espacio donde solemos liberarnos del día a día, de ser padres y por un rato dejar de ser adultos y solo pensar en reír y divertirnos como niños pues la verdad es que hemos reído demasiados con la serie y es por esa razón que por ahora la tenemos en pausa. No me preocupo pues aún estamos por la tercera temporada y son 8 temporadas y cada una de ellas con aproximadamente 20 capítulos así que apurados no estamos para terminarla pero tenía que compartir esta información con ustedes pues de seguro, tampoco han visto esta historia de cómo dos familias totalmente diferentes donde aprendemos que al final del día, los valores humanos, la empatía y el apoyo mutuo valen mucho más que cualquier diferencia cultural.

For my wife and me, this series has become that space where we usually escape from our daily lives and from being parents and for a little while, stop being adults and just focus on laughing and having fun like kids. The truth is, we’ve laughed so much watching the series, and that’s why we’ve put it on hold for now. I’m not worried, though, because we’re still on the third season, and there are eight seasons in total each with about 20 episodes so we’re in no rush to finish it. But I had to share this with you because I’m sure you haven’t seen this story either about two completely different families where we learn that, at the end of the day, human values, empathy, and mutual support are worth so much more than any cultural differences.
