My teachers have always been my role models in my career as a concert guitarist. And when I think of my Teachers, with a capital T, I think of my Maestro Jesús Ortega Irustra, who, at almost 91 years old, continues to teach as head of the guitar department at the ISA University of the Arts.

Maestro Ortega is an example of dedication. Even when he was ill, he continued to give lessons from his home to his students, who came to his house for classes. If he, at his age, continues to teach and conduct the "Sonantas Habaneras" Guitar Orchestra, neither I nor any other guitar teacher can make excuses for not pursuing our two professions: musician and teacher.

Yes, of course, it's difficult. Teaching is one of the most beautiful professions there is. Yes, being a musician is another beautiful profession. Both require a great deal of effort, sacrifice of time and energy. Anyone else would have chosen one or the other. However, I see my teacher managing both careers simultaneously and doing so with success and a high level of professionalism.

If he does it, I, as his lifelong student, can do no less. I have no excuse whatsoever.

Professor Jesús Ortega is an example in every sense, both inside and outside the classroom. It's been over thirty years since I officially stopped being his student, and yet, not a day goes by that he doesn't teach me something new. That's how I would like my students to see me. That's how I would like to be when I reach his age, having achieved all my dreams, having fulfilled all my goals.

And, among them, of course, is making him proud of the student he has. A lifelong student, for whom he still has so much to teach.

Mis maestros siempre han sido mis roles a seguir en mi carrera como guitarrista concertista. Y cuando pienso en mis Maestros, con mayúscula, pienso en mi Maestro Jesús Ortega Irustra, quien, a sus casi 91 años de edad, continúa enseñando, como jefe de la cátedra de guitarra de la universidad de las artes ISA,

El Maestro Ortega es un ejemplo de consagración. Incluso estando enfermo, desde su casa continuaba dándoles clases a sus alumnos, quienes acudían a su hogar. Si él, a su edad, continúa enseñando y continúa dirigiendo la Orquesta de Guitarras “Sonantas Habaneras”, ni yo ni ningún otro maestro de guitarras podemos poner excusas para no ejercer nuestras dos profesiones: músico y maestro.

Sí, claro, es difícil. Enseñar es una de las profesiones más hermosas que hay. Sí, ser músico es otra hermosura de profesión. Ambas llevan muchísimo esfuerzo, sacrificio de tiempo y energías. Cualquier otra persona se hubiera decidido por una de las dos. Sin embargo, yo veo a mi Maestro llevar ambas carreras de la mano y hacerlo con éxito y gran nivel de profesionalismo.
Si él lo hace, yo, como su alumna eterna, no puedo hacer menos. No tengo excusa alguna.

El Maestro Jesús Ortega es un ejemplo en todo sentido, dentro y fuera del aula. Hace más de treinta años que dejé de ser oficialmente su alumna y sin embargo, no hay día en que no me enseñe algo nuevo. Así quisiera que mis alumnos me vieran a mí. Así quisiera poder ser cuando tenga su edad y haber alcanzado todos mis sueños, haber cumplido todas mis metas.
Y, entre ellas, está, por supuesto, hacerlo sentir orgulloso de la alumna que tiene. Una alumna eterna, para quien tiene todavía mucho por enseñar.
