Dead Serious // Nollywood movie // My Review
Dead Serious (2024)
I first came across this movie's poster from inside the cab I was in on my way across town. Before that time, I only knew Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ejekwu, popularly known as 'Oga Sabinus' as a comedy skit maker. I didn't know him to be an movie actor and a great one at that. Seeing him on the poster made me so eager to watch the movie because prior to that time all I've seen of him are just his skits. I wanted to know how it was going to be like seeing him in an actual movie.
Dead serious was released in the year 2024, written and directed by Moses Iwang. This is about a young man named Johnny, played by Emmanuel Ejekwu (Sabinus) who has to bear the sad news of losing his one true love of his life to a fatal motor accident, or at least that was what he was made to believe. Heartbroken broken by this tragedy, he began to seek out means of commiting suicide so as to be reunited with the love of his life, Amara, which was played by Sharon Ooja.
But as the movie would have it, turned out Amara was never dead in the first place. It was all a plan by her family; her dad and sister, to confirm the genuineness of Johnny's love for her. And it turned out that he passed the test excellently that it left Amara's dad surprised because he from the first time she introduced Johnny to him he doubted that he was the right man for his daughter.
Review on Dead serious
This was a really beautiful rom-com. The selection of the actors to their respective roles was just really brilliant. It was really nice seeing the iconic Nkem Owoh, who played the role of Amara's dad, in the scene after some time now. It was great to see that he still got it in him absence from Nollywood for some time now.
Johnny who played the main role in the movie gave a really amazing delivery. Unlike his insensitive behavior in his skits, he gave a composure that was more matured and at the same time still succeeded in making the viewers laugh along the way. Sabinus is just a natural. He doesn't need to much display to make one laugh. I can only imagine the number of times the actors around him and the rest of the crew had to laugh when working on a scene.
I must say, Nollywood has really advanced in their movie production over the years. The acting was really on point. The humor was just top notch. Not to talk of the production. The video and sound quality was really good. There were some scenes in the movie that really left me in awe like when Johnny fell off a bridge and we could see him falling down till he landed on a truck. Or when he fell into a deep ocean. I almost had a hard time believing that this was a Nigerian film I was watching.
A little problem I had with Dead Serious
I enjoyed the movie. The only problem I had with it was that I felt the luck that Johnny had while trying to commit suicide was just too much. I mean the guy made way too many attempts to commit suicide and he didn't succeed in one, or even got the slightest injury from all the suicide attempts.
The one that just left me dumbfounded was when he stood in front of some men with guns and after multiple shots fired at him not a single bullet hit him. I thought Johnny was human, no one told me that he had superpower in the film o!
At a point I was starting to think there was some point in the movie where it had been all a dream, but I was wrong, everything was actually happening.
In conclusion...
The movie was worth the watch though. Dead serious is a beautiful home video to watch. It was really lovely to see Johnny and Amara finally end up together at the end of the movie despite all the drama. It's suitable for anyone at any age to watch. I watched it with my mom and she really loved it. I rate the movie 8/10. The producer of this movie deserves his flowers because he did quite an excellent job on this movie.
Okay, it's good you pointed out the Rom-com because ordinarily seeing the casts, I knew it'd be a comic movie.
The review sounds nice and tempting to watch.
