I Hate Luv Storys (2010) - A Rom-Com That Loves to Hate Itself (Kind Of)
Hello movie lovers! Today's review will be delved into a film titled I Hate Luv Storys. This is a Hindi romantic comedy which came out in the year 2010. It's quite a fun movie. It was directed by Punit Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. It provides us with a lot of charming moments and of course its usual music performances which appeared intermediately between the scenes.
The story introduces us to Jay (Imran Khan), a guy who doesn't believe in love and feels it is a waste of time. You mention anything about romance to him and he has already lost interest in the topic. He is of the opinion that love stories are unrealistic and completely out of touch with modern relationships. Now, the irony of this is that he works as an assistant director for Bollywood's most celebrated romance director, Veer (played by Sameer Soni).
On the other end is Simran (Sonam Kapoor), an art director who is a complete romantic at heart. She lives and breathes the kind of dreamy, larger-than-life romances that Jay frowns at. Simran seemingly has it all: a perfect life, a job she loves, and an ideal fiancé, by the name Raj (Sameer Dattani).
As Fate would have it, it brings Jay and Simran together as they're forced to collaborate on a new romantic film. Their contrasting worldviews clash in no time. Jay's zero tolerance for nonsense attitude offloaded on Simran, leading to constant disagreements. However, as they spend more time together, working closely on set and navigating their own "love story" in the making, an undeniable friendship begins to take form.
This friendship gradually makes Simran question her perfect relationship with Raj, while Jay's mindset begins to change slowly as he finds himself developing genuine feelings. The film then delves into the classic love triangle, exploring whether Jay can overcome his disbelief in "luv" and if Simran will choose her existing relationship she tries to convince herself to be worth being in or the complicated reality of a new connection.
The film possesses a pretty nice concept to it. The protagonist in this case is not one who opposes good people, but one who simply opposes romance. There were a bunch of funny scenes, singing and dancing sequences, and dramatic declarations of love. This humor was a breath of fresh air for me because I was beginning to get tired of predictable romantic narratives.
The chemistry between Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor is another I would like to point out. The both made a perfect pair in the film. Their youthful energy and differences in their personalities created a dynamic that got me engaged as I watched. I'm not a huge fan of the singing and dancing aspects though but there were quite a few songs they sang along the course of the film which I kind of loved the vibes contained in them.
Another thing I would like to point out is that it seemed to me that Jay's shift from the hardened guy who does not believe in romance to a lover boy was kind of rushed. It's like he wasn't that hardened after all. And also it seemed like the priority was more on the lighthearted fun and comedy that the deeper feeling of its characters' relationships.
This is a watchable and enjoyable Bollywood romantic comedy. It writes a love story not the conventional way like other movies. I rate the film 7.5/10.
I laughed while reading.😅
Sometimes I find myself in this position too, not ready to hear or associate myself with anything love related.
When this movie was released in 2010, it became very famous. I still remember very well that the songs of this movie were very hit. I have listened to the songs of this movie a lot and still listen to them many times. Whenever I listen to the songs of this movie, I remember those old days.
