I suspect that when we think of soundtracks, movies like The Godfather, The Last of the Mohicans, Star Wars, or composers like Ennio Morricone or John Williams often come to mind.

However, cinema is full of great themes of popular music or, if you want to call it that, “light” music (that's what they said about pop and rock music when I was a young boy). Soundtracks like Grease or songs like Eye Of The Tiger, Stayin' Alive or My Heart Will Go On that sometimes became very popular.

Soundtracks that have even become icons of pop culture, both for their music and their visual style, such as Quadrophenia, Easy Rider and Blowup. Others, which I saw live, transformed the way thousands of young people from a particular generation viewed music. This was the case with Beat Street.

Today I’m sharing a wonderful soundtrack. It was 1972, when the superstar of soul and pop, Aretha Franklin, returned to gospel music—in short, to her roots.

Tengo la sospecha de que cuando pensamos en bandas sonoras, en muchas ocasiones, nos vienen a la memoria películas como El padrino, El último Mohicano, La guerra de las galaxias o compositores como Ennio Morricone o John Williams.

Sin embargo, el cine está plagado de grandes temas de música popular o, si se quiere llamar así, de música “ligera” (así se decía de la música pop y rock cuando yo era un jovencito). Bandas sonoras que como Grease o canciones como Eye Of The Tiger, Stayin' Alive o My Heart Will Go On, en ocasiones llegaron a ser muy populares.

Bandas sonoras que incluso se han convertido en iconos de la cultura pop, tanto por la música como por la estética, como Quadrophenia, Easy Rider o Blowup. Otras, porque lo vi en vivo, transformaron la forma de ver la música entre millares de jóvenes de una generación. Fue el caso de Beat Street.

Hoy traigo una banda sonora maravillosa. Corría el año 1972, cuando la super estrella del Soul y del pop, Aretha Franklin, regresaba a la música gospel, en definitiva, a sus raíces.

The album (a double album) was recorded over two consecutive nights at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California. From the very beginning, an electrifying energy runs through the entire recording.

Unlike other artists, such as Sam Cooke, who were shunned by gospel congregations after launching their “commercial” careers, Aretha was welcomed as if she had never "left" the Church: not as a guest star, but as another sister among the congregation’s faithful.

John Hammond wrote the following inside the album sleeve:

This will be the album that, I suspect, will go down in history both as Aretha’s finest moment and as the definitive breakthrough of black gospel music into the mainstream. All the elements of perfection are here: the discipline of the great James Cleveland; the genuine enthusiasm of a live congregation; the magnificent singing of the choir; and the miraculous rhythm section that holds it all together.

El disco (un álbum doble) fue grabado a lo largo de dos noches consecutivas en la iglesia New Temple Missionary Baptist Church, Los Ángeles, California. Desde el inicio, una emoción electrizante atraviesa toda la grabación.

A diferencia de otros artistas, como Sam Cooke, que fueron repudiados por las congregaciones de gospel tras iniciar sus carreras “comerciales”, Aretha fue recibida como si jamás hubiera "abandonado" la Iglesia: no como una estrella invitada, sino como una hermana más entre los fieles de la congregación.

John Hammond escribía en el interior de la carpeta del disco lo siguiente:

Este será el álbum que, sospecho, pasará a la historia tanto como el momento más brillante de Aretha como el avance definitivo de la música gospel negra hacia la apreciación masiva. Todos los elementos de la perfección están aquí: la disciplina del gran James Cleveland; el entusiasmo genuino de una congregación en vivo; el magnífico canto del coro; y la milagrosa sección rítmica que mantiene todo unido.

The album is not only one of the highlights of Aretha’s career, but it is also her best-selling record, her biggest commercial success.

What does this double album, recorded over two nights, have to do with cinema? The answer is simple: these two magical nights of gospel music were recorded by director Sydney Pollack with the aim of bringing this concert to the big screen.

El álbum no sólo es uno de los momentos más brillantes de la carrera de Aretha, además es su disco más vendido, su mayor éxito de ventas.

¿Qué relación tiene este disco doble grabado en dos noches con el cine? La respuesta es simple, estas dos mágicas noches de música gospel fueron grabadas por el director Sydney Pollack con el objeto de llevar al cine este concierto.

However, the documentary was not released at the time due to a technical problem that occurred during filming

Years later, when Alan Elliot revived the project, it was Aretha who opposed the screening and release of the documentary.

Finally, in 2018, this wonderful recording made it to the screens. The documentary begins with these words from Reverend Janes Cleveland:

Good evening, everyone. We thank you for coming to this sacred recording session of Lady Soul, Miss Aretha Franklin. We want you to be part of this session. We want people to know that you are here too. We want you to participate and get involved with your whole heart and soul. Tonight you will witness something exciting...

Without a doubt, if the recording on vinyl format was exciting, seeing the images of Aretha during those two nights, the glances exchanged with her father, the expressions on the faces, the movements of the choir, the synchronicity of hearts and souls, the dialogue between the artist, the choir and the public... raises that emotion to a maximum degree.

Few films have moved me so much with so “little”: a united community, a piano, and a solid rhythm section.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a believer or not; the documentary connects with something that can’t be described, calculated, or bought. Enjoy it—it’s medicine for the body and soul.

In Madrid, we were lucky enough to see the documentary on the big screen at El Matadero.

Sin embargo, el documental no se estrenó en su momento debido a un problema técnico ocurrido durante el rodaje.

Transcurridos los años, cuando Alan Elliot recupera el proyecto es Aretha quien se opone a la proyección y comercialización del documental.

Por fin, en 2018 llegaba a las pantallas esta maravillosa grabación. El documental comienza con estas palabras del reverendo janes Cleveland:

Muy buenas noches a todos. Os agradecemos que hayáis venido a esta sesión religiosa de grabación de Lady Soul, la señorita Aretha Franklin. Queremos que participéis en esta sesión. Queremos que la gente se entere de que también estáis aquí. Queremos que participéis y que os involucréis con cuerpo y alma. Esta noche presenciaréis algo emocionante...

Sin duda, si la grabación en formato vinilo era emocionante, ver las imágenes de Aretha durante esas dos noches, las miradas cruzadas con su padre, las expresiones de los rostros, los movimientos del coro, la sincronía de corazones y almas, el diálogo entre la artista, el coro y el público… eleva esa emoción a un grado máximo.

Pocas películas me han emocionado tanto con tan “poco”: una comunidad unida, un piano y una buena base rítmica.

No importa que seas creyente o no lo seas, el documental conecta con algo que no se puede ni describir, ni computar, ni comprar. Disfrútalo, es medicina para el cuerpo y el alma.

En Madrid tuvimos la suerte de poder ver el documental en gran pantalla en El Matadero.
