🎬 Movie Review: Cold Storage [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos! Hoy me paso por acá para traerles mi reseña acerca de una película que la verdad vi para pasar el rato, sin muchas expectativas. Les estoy hablando de Alerta extinción.

Hey, everyone! I'm stopping by today to share my review of a movie I actually watched just to kill some time, without any real expectations. I'm talking about Cold Storage.

La historia gira en torno a un hongo que llegó del espacio en una misión de la NASA en 1979. Esto se mantuvo en secreto, pero el hongo salió de su cápsula donde estaba contenido y se empezó a extender contaminando a otros seres vivos de la zona. Un grupo de especialistas fue contratado para encargarse de la amenaza y el hongo fue contenido en un nuevo lugar en condiciones climáticas acordes para que no se propague. Pero unos años después, hace acto de presencia de nuevo y el riesgo de un apocalipsis vuelve a encender las alarmas.

The story revolves around a fungus that arrived from space on a NASA mission in 1979. This was kept secret, but the fungus escaped from the capsule where it was contained and began to spread, infecting other living beings in the area. A team of specialists was hired to deal with the threat, and the fungus was contained in a new location with suitable climatic conditions to prevent it from spreading. But a few years later, it reappears, and the risk of an apocalypse sets off alarm bells once again.

Sí, leyeron bien, el villano protagonista de esta película es un hongo al mejor estilo The Last of Us, pero la trama deja un poco que desear, hay varios huecos argumentales que no se entendieron y algunas incongruencias. Es una película entretenida para pasar el rato. Creo que la vi más que nada por los actores y porque me gustan las producciones apocalípticas.

Yes, you read that right—the main villain in this movie is a fungus, just like in The Last of Us—but the plot leaves a bit to be desired; there are several plot holes that didn’t make sense and a few inconsistencies. It’s an entertaining movie to kill some time. I think I watched it mostly because of the actors and because I like apocalyptic films.

Se me hizo algo divertida por momentos, no es una historia que se haya ganado mi corazón, ni nada por el estilo. Creo que la idea general era interesante y podría haberse explotado mejor aunque no sea una trama novedosa. No sé explica muy bien cómo llegó el hongo en la cápsula a la Tierra, ni cómo lo dejaron sin supervisión tantos años sabiendo que era peligroso. Lo tenían en una bóveda subterránea a una temperatura fría, que se dejó de revisar, y luego allí arriba se construyó un almacén donde trabaja gente. En ningún momento fue una prioridad ir a hacerle mantenimiento al lugar, y claro, con los cambios climáticos y el tiempo que pasó el hongo se empezó a filtrar de nuevo.

I found it somewhat entertaining at times, but it’s not a story that won my heart or anything like that. I think the overall idea was interesting and could have been developed better, even if the plot isn’t particularly original. It doesn’t explain very well how the fungus in the capsule ended up on Earth, or how they left it unattended for so many years knowing it was dangerous. They kept it in an underground vault at a cold temperature, which they stopped checking on, and then a warehouse was built on top of it where people work. At no point was it a priority to go and maintain the place, and of course, with climate change and the passage of time, the fungus started seeping out again.

Este busca extenderse por los seres vivos para contagiarlos y darles órdenes a sus nuevos huéspedes de contagiar a otros. Es básicamente como una versión zombie, pero en vez de morder gente, ellos buscaban vomitarlos encima o alguna asquerosidad similar jajaja. Bastante repulsiva en ese sentido, pero me gustaron algunos efectos visuales del hongo. Tampoco entiendo como siendo algo riesgoso y super importante que se contenga a tiempo para evitar una catástrofe, solo mandaran a una sola persona. O que incluso no intentarán bombardear la zona desde el principio, más allá de lo obvio, no tiene coherencia alguna.

It seeks to spread through living beings to infect them and command its new hosts to infect others. It’s basically like a zombie version, but instead of biting people, they tried to vomit on them or do some other disgusting thing like that, hahaha. Pretty repulsive in that sense, but I liked some of the visual effects of the fungus. I also don’t understand how, given that it’s something risky and super important that needs to be contained in time to avoid a catastrophe, they would send just one person. Or that they wouldn’t even try to bomb the area from the start—beyond the obvious, it makes no sense at all.

Eso sí, es muy absurda de ver. Te das cuenta enseguida que no tiene ni pies ni cabeza, no sé cómo piensan que de esa manera se deshacen del hongo sabiendo que puede volver a crecer bajo tierra. Que sería lo más factible, pero bueno. Ya les digo, igual estuvo entretenida e ideal para no pensar tanto, como diría una amiga, es una bolupeli. Pero me vino bien verla porque estaba un poco dispersa y no es una trama que necesitará toda mi atención.

That said, it’s pretty absurd to watch. You realize right away that it doesn’t make any sense—I don’t know how they think they can get rid of the fungus that way, knowing it can grow back underground. Which would be the most likely outcome, but whatever. Like I said, it was still entertaining and perfect for not thinking too much—as a friend of mine would say, it’s a mindless flick. But it was good for me to watch because I was feeling a bit scattered, and it’s not the kind of plot that demands my full attention.
