🎬 Movie Review: I Know What You Did Last Summer [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos! Hoy me paso por acá para traerles mi reseña acerca de la nueva película de un clásico del slasher como lo es Se lo que hicieron el verano pasado. Ya les adelanto que, al contrario de la opinión popular, me sorprendió para bien.

Hello, friends! Today I'm here to bring you my review of the new film based on the slasher classic I Know What You Did Last Summer. I'll tell you right now that, contrary to popular opinion, I was pleasantly surprised.

En esta ocasión seguimos a un grupo de 5 jóvenes que están celebrando el 4 de julio en Southport. Allí provocan un accidente y alguien muere, pero ellos hacen el pacto de no contar a nadie lo sucedido. Todo marcha normal, hasta que el año siguiente los vuelve a unir en el mismo lugar y reciben un anónimo de alguien que sabe lo que hicieron el verano pasado, por lo que están siendo acechados por este sujeto misterioso vestido como pescador con un garfio que los intentará asesinar uno a uno. Lo que ellos tienen que establecer es la conexión con la masacre ocurrida en 1997 con el mismo modus operandi y descubrir quién es el asesino esta vez antes de que sea demasiado tarde.

This time, we follow a group of five young people celebrating the Fourth of July in Southport. There, they cause an accident and someone dies, but they make a pact not to tell anyone what happened. Everything goes on as normal until the following year, when they meet again in the same place and receive an anonymous letter from someone who knows what they did last summer. They are being stalked by this mysterious figure dressed as a fisherman with a hook, who will try to kill them one by one. What they have to establish is the connection with the massacre that occurred in 1997 with the same modus operandi and discover who the killer is this time before it's too late.

Si les soy sincera no le tenía casi nada de fe a esta nueva entrega, pero había leído una reseña por acá que me animó a darle una oportunidad y al final resultó mejor de lo esperado. Hace muchísimo de la última vez que vi estas películas, por lo que no la tenía tan fresco, pero me impactó que fui rememorando cosas a medida que transcurría la trama. La parte en la que empiezan a aparecer los sobrevivientes de la masacre de 1997 fue genial, me trajo muchos recuerdos. Que bueno que pudieron hacerlo con los actores originales de ese entonces. También me gustó que incluyeran varios guiños a las versiones pasadas.

To be honest, I had almost no faith in this new installment, but I had read a review here that encouraged me to give it a chance, and in the end, it turned out better than expected. It's been a long time since I last saw these movies, so I didn't remember them very well, but I was struck by how I started to remember things as the plot unfolded. The part where the survivors of the 1997 massacre start to appear was great; it brought back a lot of memories. It's great that they were able to do it with the original actors from back then. I also liked that they included several nods to the previous versions.

La película me resultó bastante entretenida, aunque claro, un poco floja en cuanto a profundidad y buscarle un sentido racional a todo esto. Pero cumplió su función y la encontré más atrapante de lo que pensaba en primera instancia. Incluso llegué a encariñarme con los nuevos protagonistas, aunque algunos se me hacían muy tontos. Siento que es una película que busco ser irónica en varios momentos, entonces hubo partes que daban risa en vez de miedo.

I found the film quite entertaining, although, of course, a little weak in terms of depth and finding a rational meaning to it all. But it served its purpose, and I found it more captivating than I initially thought. I even grew fond of the new protagonists, although some of them seemed very silly to me. I feel like it's a movie that tries to be ironic at various points, so there were parts that were funny rather than scary.

Con respecto a las escenas sangrientas de muertes, si debo decir que algunas me dieron mucha impresión, pero eso le dio el toque. También intenté averiguar quién podría estar detrás de todo esto y no acerté, soy muy mala detective. La verdad es que me sorprendió muchísimo el giro final, no lo vi venir hasta que lo tuve en mi nariz. Aunque fue efectivo y me dio mucha curiosidad por lo que hagan en una próxima entrega.

As for the bloody death scenes, I have to say that some of them really shocked me, but that added to the story. I also tried to figure out who could be behind it all, but I didn't get it right—I'm a terrible detective. The truth is that I was really surprised by the final twist. I didn't see it coming until it was right under my nose. Although it was effective and made me very curious about what they'll do in the next installment.

Quizá algunas cosas me parecieron demasiado fantasiosas para mi gusto, como que no llegaron a ser muy creíbles, pero bueno, ya está hecho. Por lo pronto quedé satisfecha con lo que vi y me causó mucha gracia que una de las actrices protagónicas fuera la misma de la película que les traje reseña la semana pasada. Cuando la vi dije que a esta la conocía, hice la conexión al final cuando busqué el nombre de las actrices y vi que era la misma. ¡Qué coincidencia! Me agrado ella, aunque un poco tonto su personaje en esta película.

Perhaps some things seemed too fantastical for my taste, as they weren't very believable, but oh well, it's done now. For now, I was satisfied with what I saw, and I found it very funny that one of the leading actresses was the same one from the movie I reviewed last week. When I saw her, I said I knew her, and I made the connection at the end when I looked up the names of the actresses and saw that it was the same one. What a coincidence! I like her, even though her character in this movie is a little silly.

En definitiva, fue una buena producción a pesar de sus falencias, la disfruté bastante y me sentí algo nostálgica. Supongo que intentaron apelar a esto con los viejos fans y también atrapar a los nuevos. Veremos si les fue bien o no. A mí me gustaría seguir viendo más de estas películas, el final fue abierto y quiero saber cómo la continuarán. Así que está más que recomendada por mi parte.

All in all, it was a good production despite its flaws. I enjoyed it quite a bit and felt somewhat nostalgic. I guess they tried to appeal to old fans and also attract new ones. We'll see if they succeeded or not. I'd like to see more of these movies. The ending was open-ended, and I want to know how they'll continue it. So, I highly recommend it.
