¡Hola amigos! Hoy me paso por acá para traerles mi opinión acerca de una película basada en la vida de la religiosa Ann Lee. Les estoy hablando de El testamento de Ann Lee.

Hi, everyone! I'm stopping by today to share my thoughts on a movie based on the life of the nun Ann Lee. I'm talking about The Testament of Ann Lee.

En esta película seguiremos a Ann Lee, una joven devota que se volcó a la religión de los Shakers, un culto que consiste en confesar los pecados y sacarlos afuera por medio de danzas y cánticos. Tras una dura vida que le arrebató 4 hijos se volvió la líder del culto religioso y promulgó el celibato, la igualdad entre el hombre y la mujer, y el trabajo en comunidad. Llegó a extender su comunidad desde Inglaterra hasta Nueva York, aunque sus métodos fueron cuestionados y muchas veces se la acusó de brujería. Este es un pedazo de su historia.

In this film, we follow Ann Lee, a devout young woman who devoted herself to the Shaker religion, a sect that involves confessing sins and expelling them through dance and song. After a difficult life that took four of her children from her, she became the leader of the religious sect and promoted celibacy, equality between men and women, and communal work. She expanded her community from England to New York, though her methods were questioned and she was often accused of witchcraft. This is a piece of her story.

Una mujer de la que no sabía mucho, pero que dejó su huella para la época, sobre todo, al volverse la líder de los Shakers. Hasta ese entonces no era aceptado que las mujeres predicaran, pero ella formó su propia comunidad que la respaldaba y la cuidaba como si fuera su madre. Es un poco eso lo que la llevó a convertirse en la líder, el haber perdido 4 hijos y quedar con un vacío enorme y una aversión a las relaciones sexuales. Volcó su amor de madre en sus súbditos. Aunque sus métodos fueron fuertemente cuestionados y se la acusaba de brujería por todo lo que implicaba para la época, ya sabemos que las mujeres que se destacaban eran acusadas de lo mismo. Sin embargo, en la película dejan entrever que ella era la segunda venida de Jesús y tenía visiones del futuro, por eso también era venerada y apodada como "Madre Ann". Aunque varios de sus súbditos también admitían tener algunas visiones.

A woman I didn’t know much about, but who left her mark on her era, especially by becoming the leader of the Shakers. Until then, it wasn’t accepted for women to preach, but she formed her own community that supported her and cared for her as if she were their mother. That’s partly what led her to become the leader—having lost four children and been left with a huge void and an aversion to sexual relations. She poured her motherly love into her followers. Although her methods were heavily criticized and she was accused of witchcraft—given all that this entailed at the time—we know that women who stood out were often accused of the same thing. However, the film suggests that she was the second coming of Jesus and had visions of the future, which is why she was also revered and nicknamed “Mother Ann.” Although several of her followers also admitted to having some visions.

Me gustó que la película tuviera esa mezcla entre drama y música. Al principio fue algo raro, pero luego entre en tema y realmente se me pegaron varias canciones. Sin dudas, a pesar de ser una comunidad bastante estricta con sus reglas, no lastimaban a nadie, ellos solo querían vivir tranquilos en comunidad y hacer sus alabanzas por medio de sus cánticos y sus bailes. Se me hizo una religión bastante alegre, aunque no comparta algunos de sus principios.

I liked that the movie had that blend of drama and music. It felt a little strange at first, but then I got into it, and several songs really stuck with me. Without a doubt, even though they were a fairly strict community with their rules, they didn’t hurt anyone; they just wanted to live peacefully together and offer their praise through their songs and dances. It struck me as a pretty joyful religion, even though I don’t share some of its principles.

También me gustó mucho la actuación de Amanda Seyfried en el rol de Ann Lee, lo hizo estupendo. Me encantó la banda sonora, los bailes y la fotografía de la película. Es una producción bastante decente y te cautiva a su manera. Eso sí, no creo que sea del gustó de muchos, ya que los temas religiosos no suelen ser de mucho agrado y, más allá de eso, la película puede ser lenta y decaer en algunos momentos. Al final solo es eso, un film que intenta retratar de alguna manera lo que fue esta líder y dar a conocer cómo se fue instalando su religión en el mundo.

I also really liked Amanda Seyfried’s performance as Ann Lee—she was fantastic. I loved the soundtrack, the dance sequences, and the cinematography. It’s a pretty decent production that draws you in in its own way. That said, I don’t think it will be to everyone’s taste, since religious themes aren’t usually very popular, and beyond that, the film can be slow and drag at times. In the end, that’s all it is: a film that attempts to portray, in some way, who this leader was and to show how her religion took root in the world.

Nadie puede decir que no hizo un trabajo impecable, ya que conquistó varios territorios y también fue duramente castigada y metida presa en 2 ocasiones. También fue golpeada y atacada por sus creencias, pero nunca dejó de predicar lo que ella creía. Eso es admirable, te guste o no. Creo que fue un lindo trabajo de producción. Tal vez para alguien que sepa más del tema haya cosas que no le cierren o no comparta del todo. Pero desde mi nulo conocimiento pude disfrutar de la película y de la historia que me estaban contando. Así que la recomiendo para el que le interese.

No one can say she didn’t do an impeccable job, since she conquered several territories and was also severely punished and imprisoned on two occasions. She was also beaten and attacked for her beliefs, but she never stopped preaching what she believed in. That’s admirable, whether you like it or not. I think it was a well-made film. Perhaps for someone who knows more about the subject, there might be things that don’t quite add up or that they don’t fully agree with. But from my limited knowledge, I was able to enjoy the movie and the story it was telling me. So I recommend it to anyone who’s interested.
