¡Hola amigos! Hoy les quiero hablar acerca de una película que vi hace un tiempo y en ese momento no quise comentarla, pero ahora lo haré. La película en cuestión es Todo lo que nunca fuimos.

Hi, friends! Today I want to talk to you about a movie I saw a while back. I didn't want to talk about it at the time, but I'm going to now. The movie in question is Everything We Never Were.

En esta historia seguimos a Leah, una adolescente que perdió a sus padres en un accidente de auto en el que ella también iba, pero no sufrió mayores daños físicos, sino que sus traumas son emocionales. Su hermano mayor se hace cargo de ella, pero debe irse unos meses por trabajo y la deja al cuidado de su mejor amigo, Axel. Ellos se conocen desde hace mucho, pero Leah siempre sintió algo por él, así que esto de pasar tiempo juntos termina creando cierta tensión entre los dos. Aunque lo más importante es que, con su ayuda, Leah empieza a salir del cascarón nuevamente.

In this story, we follow Leah, a teenager who lost her parents in a car accident in which she was also a passenger; she didn’t suffer any serious physical injuries, but her trauma is emotional. Her older brother takes care of her, but he has to leave for a few months for work and leaves her in the care of his best friend, Axel. They’ve known each other for a long time, but Leah has always had feelings for him, so spending time together ends up creating some tension between them. Most importantly, though, with his help, Leah begins to come out of her shell again.

Es de esas historias dramáticas, me imagine que seria de este modo, pero hay algo que me chocó bastante y es que el romance se da entre personas con bastante diferencia de edad, no estoy en contra de esto cuando ambos ya son adultos responsables, pero el personaje de Leah recién tiene 18 años y todavía va al secundario, es imposible no verla como una adolescente aún. Encima nunca aclaran la edad de Axel en la película, pero el actor se ve bastante más mayor. Sé que en el libro, en el que está basada la historia, tienen unos 10 años de diferencia más o menos, pero en la película él se ve como de +35 y eso choca un poco.

It’s one of those dramatic stories—I figured it would be like this—but there’s something that really struck me: the romance is between people with a significant age gap. I’m not against this when both are responsible adults, but Leah’s character is only 18 and still in high school; it’s impossible not to see her as a teenager. On top of that, they never specify Axel’s age in the movie, but the actor looks quite a bit older. I know that in the book, on which the story is based, there’s an age difference of about 10 years, but in the movie he looks like he’s over 35, and that’s a bit jarring.

Igual no pasó nada fuera de lo normal, el romance inclusive fue muy dulce. Vemos a una Leah traumatizada que poco a poco empieza a cambiar gracias a la ayuda de Axel y eso es muy notorio. Al principio se resisten a lo que sienten, pero luego lo dejan escapar y ahí entra el conflicto porque son conscientes que la diferencia de edad lo complica todo. Sobre todo porque su hermano y Axel son muy amigos, y se termina viendo como una traición de su parte para con su mejor amigo que le confió el cuidado de su hermana.

Maybe nothing out of the ordinary happened—the romance was actually very sweet. We see a traumatized Leah who gradually begins to change thanks to Axel’s help, and that’s very noticeable. At first, they resist their feelings, but then they let themselves go—and that’s when the conflict arises, because they’re aware that the age difference complicates everything. Especially since her brother and Axel are very close friends, and it ends up looking like a betrayal on her part toward her best friend, who entrusted her to her care.

Lo que más destaque es la madurez de Leah, por un momento temí que dejara de lado sus metas y pospusiera lo de ir a la universidad por estar con Axel, pero sucedió al contrario, ella fue la valiente y decidió dar un paso al costado para ir en busca de sus sueños y así ser digna de poder vivir su historia de amor como se merece, más adelante. En mi opinión fue lo mejor.

What stands out most is Leah’s maturity. For a moment, I feared she would set aside her goals and put off going to college to be with Axel, but the opposite happened: she was the brave one and decided to step aside to pursue her dreams—and thus prove herself worthy of living out her love story the way it deserves, down the road. In my opinion, it was the best thing she could have done.

El que me sorprendió fue Axel, a pesar de ser el mayor no le vi una meta clara en su vida, ni siquiera nos muestran si tiene un trabajo porque se la pasa en la playa surfeando, no entendí varias de sus actitudes, y la película no explica mucho tampoco. Deja todo a la libre imaginación, creo que en lo que más se enfoca es en Leah y en su recuperación, además de en su romance incipiente pero explosivo. Lo demás como que no importa por el momento.

The one who surprised me was Axel. Even though he’s the oldest, I didn’t see a clear goal in his life—they don’t even show us if he has a job because he spends all his time at the beach surfing. I didn’t understand a lot of his behavior, and the movie doesn’t explain much either. It leaves everything to the imagination; I think it focuses mostly on Leah and her recovery, as well as her budding but explosive romance. The rest doesn’t really matter right now.

Lo que más me gustó de la película es el mensaje final de Leah yendo a la universidad. Sé que hay una continuación en los libros, así que tal vez hagan una segunda parte con la película también y espero que esta historia pueda suceder de la mejor manera posible. No me convenció del todo al principio, fue bastante chocante y es un poco plana, no suceden muchas cosas, hay varios huecos argumentales que no se explican y las escenas se ven un poco raras. Así que quizá sea una película más olvidable que otra cosa, pero tal vez a alguien le guste.

What I liked most about the movie was the final scene with Leah going off to college. I know there’s a sequel in the books, so maybe they’ll make a second movie too, and I hope this story turns out for the best. It didn’t quite win me over at first—it was pretty jarring and a bit flat. Not much happens, there are several plot holes that aren’t explained, and the scenes look a little odd. So it might be more of a forgettable movie than anything else, but maybe someone will like it.
