🎬 Movie Review: Wuthering Heights [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos! La semana pasada tuve la fortuna de ir al cine el día del estreno a ver Cumbres borrascosas. Es una película que estaba esperando con ansias, ya que quería ver cómo hacían la adaptación del libro clásico, y encima con actores que me encantan. Acá les traigo mi reseña de la película.

Hello, friends! Last week, I was lucky enough to go to the movies on opening day to see Wuthering Heights. It's a movie I was really looking forward to, as I wanted to see how they adapted the classic book, especially with actors I love. Here's my review of the movie.

La historia gira en torno a Catherine y Heathcliff, dos amigos de la infancia que viven en una granja que se cae a pedazos en los páramos de Yorkshire, llamada Cumbres borrascosas. Ahí van a crecer entre la desolación, la niebla y la pobreza que les respira cada vez más cerca. En su adultez, estos jóvenes desarrollan una obsesión el uno con el otro que les traerá pesares tanto a ellos como a las personas de su alrededor. Es una historia de amores rencorosos, tóxicos y vengativos.

The story revolves around Catherine and Heathcliff, two childhood friends who live on a farm falling apart in the Yorkshire moors, called Wuthering Heights. There they grow up amid the desolation, fog, and poverty that surrounds them more and more closely. As adults, these young people develop an obsession with each other that will bring sorrow to both them and those around them. It is a story of resentful, toxic, and vengeful love.

Es una adaptación bastante libre al clásico, pero la verdad es que me fascino. Quedé enamorada de la fotografía de la película, tiene un arte increíble, todo está hermosamente ambientado y la historia es muy atrapante en sí. Tal vez puede resultar un poco lenta al principio cuando los personajes principales son unos niños todavía, pero ahí ya empieza a vislumbrarse la dinámica de esos dos y todo lo que termina aconteciendo.

It's a fairly loose adaptation of the classic, but I was really fascinated by it. I fell in love with the cinematography in the film; it's incredibly artistic, everything is beautifully staged, and the story itself is very captivating. It may seem a little slow at first when the main characters are still children, but that's when you start to glimpse the dynamic between the two of them and everything that ends up happening.

No quiero dejar de remarcar que no es una historia de amor romántico, es posesivo, tóxico y enfermizo. Pero en cierto punto, esa fue la forma de amarse que encontraron estos personajes y la que los llevó a su posterior debacle. A mí me pareció muy poético todo, pero de esos poemas que no son lindos, sino que te humillan y te violentan. Todavía estoy suspirando por este par, pero entiendo que su amor no podía terminar bien y esa es una pena.

I want to emphasize that this is not a romantic love story; it is possessive, toxic, and unhealthy. But at a certain point, that was the way these characters found to love each other, and it led to their eventual downfall. I found it all very poetic, but in the way that poems aren't beautiful, they humiliate and violate you. I'm still pining for this couple, but I understand that their love couldn't end well, and that's a shame.

Insisto con que las tomas y la fotografía fueron increíbles, es una película muy bella visualmente, eso que la mayoría de la ambientación es tétrica y media gótica. Quede fascinada. La musicalización también fue buena, acompaña muy bien a la historia que querían contar. Aunque leí comentarios de que a veces no correspondían a la época antigua, lo que me hace estar de acuerdo, pero es lo de menos.

I insist that the shots and photography were incredible. It is a visually stunning film, even though most of the setting is gloomy and somewhat gothic. I was fascinated. The music was also good, accompanying the story they wanted to tell very well. Although I read comments that sometimes it did not correspond to the ancient era, which I agree with, but that is the least of it.

Y en cierto modo, también es un poco burda y cómica, en más de una ocasión me encontré riendo por las ocurrencias dichas, no porque sea graciosa, sino porque es tan grotesca y absurda por momentos que da risa. Me pareció un buen acierto, temía que se pareciera mucho a una película al estilo de 50 sombras de Grey. La verdad es que hubo tensión sexual durante todo el film, pero no se concretó nada formal hasta la segunda mitad de la película y tampoco fue tan descriptivo.

And in a way, it's also a little crude and comical. On more than one occasion, I found myself laughing at the jokes, not because they were funny, but because they were so grotesque and absurd at times that they made me laugh. I thought it was a good choice. I was afraid it would be too similar to a movie like Fifty Shades of Grey. The truth is that there was sexual tension throughout the film, but nothing formal happened until the second half of the movie, and it wasn't that descriptive either.

Cabe destacar también que Heathcliff y Cathy no fueron los únicos personajes desequilibrados que hubo en la película, creo que todos estaban un poco en ese mood a su manera. Desde la criada que envidiaba mucho a Cathy y hacía cosas a sus espaldas, hasta su cuñada que parecía aniñada en el buen sentido y terminó siendo una arpía. Eso es lo que muestra Cumbres borrascosas, que la tierra es tóxica también y que nada lindo puede crecer allí. Todo se descompone y muere. El clima es de total desolación, no hay espacio para la felicidad y las cosas buenas porque te va consumiendo de a poco.

It should also be noted that Heathcliff and Cathy were not the only unbalanced characters in the film; I think everyone was a little bit in that mood in their own way. From the maid who envied Cathy greatly and did things behind her back, to her sister-in-law who seemed childish in a good way and ended up being a shrew. That's what Wuthering Heights shows us: that the land is toxic too, and that nothing beautiful can grow there. Everything decays and dies. The atmosphere is one of total desolation; there is no room for happiness and good things because it consumes you little by little.

En fin, es una historia interesante acerca de un amor enfermizo, no van a encontrar una obra maestra, pero es tan bella que me dan ganas de verla de nuevo ahora mismo, mientras escribía esta reseña. Las actuaciones están muy bien, yo sé que muchas señoritas están en esta empresa por Jacob Elordi 🤭, así que no se van a decepcionar en ese sentido, pero hay para todos los gustos. También es cierto que hay algunas incongruencias y que nunca nos terminan de explicar como Heathcliff pasa de ser un simple empleado huérfano de una granja en ruinas a convertirse en una persona con dinero, pero bueno, se ve que eso no era lo importante. De todos modos, puede ser algo lenta de ritmo así que entiendo si no es del agrado de muchos. Pero si saben disfrutar de los detalles y los planos, seguro que les gustará.

In short, it's an interesting story about an unhealthy love. You won't find a masterpiece here, but it's so beautiful that I want to watch it again right now, while I'm writing this review. The performances are very good. I know that many young women are watching this series because of Jacob Elordi 🤭, so they won't be disappointed in that regard, but there's something for everyone. It's also true that there are some inconsistencies and that we never get a full explanation of how Heathcliff goes from being a simple orphaned farmhand on a run-down farm to becoming a wealthy man, but hey, you can see that wasn't the important thing. Anyway, it can be a bit slow-paced, so I understand if it's not to everyone's liking. But if you know how to enjoy the details and the shots, I'm sure you'll like it.
