¡Hola amigos! Hoy les vuelvo a traer otra obra de Makoto Shinkai, ya que estoy viendo su filmografía. Ahora le tocó el turno a El jardín de las palabras, estrenada en el año 2013. Este es el tercer film que veo de su autoría. La verdad que quitando Your Name, hasta ahora las otras dos que vi son producciones bastante cortas. Esta lo es todavía más que 5 centímetros por segundo, tan solo dura 45 min, pero es muy significativa.

Hello friends! Today I bring you again another work of Makoto Shinkai, as I'm watching his filmography. Now it was the turn of The Garden of Words, released in 2013. This is the third film I've seen by him. The truth is that except for Your Name, the other two I've seen so far are quite short productions. This one is even shorter than 5 Centimeters per Second, it only lasts 45 minutes, but it is very significant.

La historia sigue a un estudiante de secundaria de 15 años llamado Takao Akizuki que tiene el sueño de convertirse en zapatero, y a una mujer misteriosa.

The story follows a 15-year-old high school student named Takao Akizuki who has a dream of becoming a shoemaker, and a mysterious woman.

En la temporada de lluvias que amenaza su ciudad durante todo el mes de junio, en vez de ir a la escuela decide pasar sus mañanas en un parador que hay en un jardín para diseñar zapatos. Allí se encuentra con una mujer adulta que parece estar esquivando sus responsabilidades, ya que siempre la ve tomando una lata de cerveza y comiendo golosinas. Al principio no hablan, pero luego empiezan a tener pequeñas conversaciones, ella le pregunta sobre lo qué hace y porque no está en la escuela y él la reta por estar bebiendo tan temprano y sin comer nada. Así que empieza a llevar comida para compartirle.

During the rainy season that threatens his town during the whole month of June, instead of going to school he decides to spend his mornings in a garden where he designs shoes. There he meets a grown woman who seems to be shirking her responsibilities, as he always sees her drinking a can of beer and eating candy. At first they don't talk, but then they start having small conversations, she asks him about what he's doing and why he's not in school and he chides her for drinking so early and not eating anything. So he starts bringing food to share with her.

Takao le habla de sus sueños y hasta le toma medidas a sus pies para hacerle unos zapatos y ella le compra un libro sobre zapatería. Pero nunca le cuenta nada personal sobre su vida ni le dice su nombre. Sin embargo, su relación cada vez se hace más estrecha.

Takao tells her about his dreams and even measures her feet to make shoes for her and she buys him a book on shoemaking. But she never tells him anything personal about her life or tells him her name. However, their relationship grows closer and closer.

Al finalizar el periodo de lluvias, él vuelve a la escuela y allí se encuentra con esta mujer misteriosa que resulta ser Yukari Yukino, una profesora de 27 años que se había tomado licencia por estar pasando por un mal momento.

At the end of the rainy season, he returns to school and there he meets this mysterious woman who turns out to be Yukari Yukino, a 27-year-old teacher who had taken a leave of absence because she was going through a hard time.

No diría que este film trata sobre el amor, si bien es cierto que Makoto Shinkai nos presenta en sus obras las distintas maneras en las que dos personas que desarrollan sentimientos mutuos tienden a separarse. Acá va más allá, nos habla de algo con lo que más de uno se va a sentir identificado. El tema de la depresión es algo que está muy presente, no es que la haya experimentado en carne propia, pero empatice mucho con la historia de Yukari, ese sentimiento e impotencia de querer avanzar y no poder. Ella se levantaba todas las mañanas con la intención de volver al trabajo pero no podía. Nos muestran pequeños vistazos al desorden de su departamento, todo sucio, lleno de comida y bebidas. Saber que a los 27 años se encontraba tan pérdida, como seguramente nos pasa y nos pase a muchos, es parte de la vida y de nuestro crecimiento personal, a veces son necesarios estos quiebres para pegar el volantazo y tomar nuevos rumbos.

I wouldn't say that this film is about love, although it is true that Makoto Shinkai presents in his works the different ways in which two people who develop mutual feelings tend to separate. Here he goes further, he talks about something that more than one will feel identified with. The theme of depression is something that is very present, not that I have experienced it firsthand, but I empathize a lot with Yukari's story, that feeling and helplessness of wanting to move forward and not being able to. She would get up every morning with the intention of going back to work but couldn't. We are shown little glimpses of the mess of her apartment, all dirty, full of food and drinks. Knowing that at the age of 27 she was so lost, as surely happens to us and to many of us, is part of life and our personal growth, sometimes these breaks are necessary to take a turn and take new directions.

También fue un buen contraste con la historia de Takao, un chico tan joven que ya sabía lo que quería ser en la vida y se esforzaba para lograrlo. Aunque también le toca cargar con las típicas inseguridades de no creerse lo suficientemente bueno en lo que hace.

It was also a nice contrast to the story of Takao, a boy so young that he already knew what he wanted to be in life and was striving to achieve it. Although he is also burdened with the typical insecurities of not believing he is good enough at what he does.

Cuando ambos se encontraron pudieron compartir sus preocupaciones y, sin saberlo, se ayudaron mutuamente. Yukari pudo salir del estado en que se encontraba sumida y también le dio importantes lecciones a Takao. Ambos tuvieron que aprender a caminar. Esa es la metáfora de los zapatos en esta película, aprender a pararse en los obstáculos y seguir adelante.

When the two met, they were able to share their concerns and unknowingly helped each other. Yukari was able to get out of the state she was in and also gave important lessons to Takao. They both had to learn to walk. That is the metaphor of shoes in this film, learning to stand on obstacles and move forward.

Creo que tuvieron un enamoramiento, Takao seguro que sí, pero por el tema de la edad y la posición de Yukari no pasó a más que eso, un primer amor juvenil en la vida del adolescente y un cable a tierra para ella.

I think they had a crush, Takao sure did, but because of the age issue and Yukari's position it didn't go beyond that, a first young love in the teenager's life and a grounding wire for her.

La fotografía sigue siendo excelente y el soundtrack final se me hizo bastante conmovedor. Me emocionó esa última parte, pero no tanto como pensaba. Estuve investigando y vi que para muchos es su obra favorita de Makoto Shinkai, por mí parte les digo que si bien me gustó, no es mi favorita de las que vi. Todavía me faltan algunas, entre ellas su última película a la que le tengo muchas ganas.

The cinematography is still excellent and the final soundtrack was quite moving. I was moved by that last part, but not as much as I thought. I was researching and I saw that for many it is their favorite work of Makoto Shinkai, for my part I say that although I liked it, it is not my favorite of those I saw. I'm still missing some of them, among them his last movie, which I'm really looking forward to.
