Ella Schön

Two reviews in one week? This is quite a performance from me, but the review about this series has been on my list for a year or so, but ... you know how it is. This is not a Turkish series, so stresskiller you don't have to tag incublus and the other Turkish user to try to get me into trouble 😎.

This is a German series, called Ella Schön and has a 6.8 rating on IMDB, which is good I think. This time I was fortunate to have Hungarian audio as I was watching in on TV, aired by a Hungarian channel and to my surprise, the language they used was exceptional. No slang, no dumbing down language just to fit the mood and the expectation of the low IQ crowd. This has contributed to me liking the series so much. An interesting detail about the rating is that people either liked it or hated it.

The first time I watched this series was in 2020 and loved every minute of it, even though so many are calling it annoying and you'll find out why.

Ella, Asperger's autist, prospective lawyer, analytical and ruthlessly honest. The other: Christina, single parent, cafe owner, chaotic and intuitive. The lives of both are linked by a fate, they share the house and everyday life. "Ella Schön" tells the unusual story of two unequal people who enrich the life of the fish countries on the Baltic Sea in very different ways in a warm and humorous way.

To give you a bit broader introduction, Ella Schön (Annette Frier), finds out her husband, a pilot, had another family, after he dies and he inherits a property. Ella meets Christina Kieper (Julia Richter), who is raising 3 kids (from 3 different man) on her own. Ella moves in with them as half of the property is hers and the adventure begins.

Asperger syndrome (AS), also known as Asperger's syndrome or Asperger's, is a diagnostic label that has historically been used to describe a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior and interests.source

The two characters could not be any different. Ella has Asperger's syndrome, she's very calculated, organized, black-and-white type person, there's no grey for her. Everything has to be in perfect order, organized and logical. She doesn't understand jokes, her whole life rotates around rules, schedules and order.

Christina is the very definition of chaos. Raising 3 kids on your own is not an easy task, so you can imagine each day is a huge challenge. She's managing a small cafe, which has its own challenges as well.

They live in a fishing village, with a lovely beach, where everyone knows everyone and as the disadvantage of these small places, everyone is judging everyone.

Before I start, I must admit that I knew nothing about Asperger's syndrome and I'm not a psychiatrist either, to have any knowledge about autism. All I know is what's common knowledge and what you can read on the internet.

Following Ella's journey was very educational for me, made me think of a lot of things as it showed me a totally different world. Today I'd like to share my thoughts about it.

Imagine Ella walking into the boutique and buying 11 shirts of the same size and design, pants several of the same type as well and wearing the same design each day. Yes, she had clean clothes each day as she was wearing a different piece, but looked the same way every single day. Her desk had to be organized, everything in perfect order and any disorder made her highly uncomfortable.

This made me think of if I could live like that. I mean having everything in perfect order is not a bad thing as order can help you get better results, but the problematic part is, when the smallest disorder can bother you to the extent that you can't do your job anymore, or you even get sick.

As a prospective lawyer, she had the strictness of the law in her work, as there's no maybe when it comes to applying the law, but the way you deal with clients is a different matter. Legal cases are always bothering, there's always a problem to solve and sometimes the consequences are really devastating, but in Ella's life, this process was really robotic. She showed no emotions and as she was lacking any social skills, from the outside, it looked like it's really easy for her. I mean imagine her telling the client "according to the penal code, you're potentially facing two years of suspended sentence, a fine of X amount and your license revoked". Any other human being would communicate such news with regret or some kind of sympathy, empathy or whatever emotion the case is bringing on you, even though lawyers should be impartial, objective and emotionless. For Ella, after communicating what she has to, is job done, chapter closed, problem solved.

Screenwriters made an excellent job by showing what it is like to live with such a person and how Asperger's autistic can cope with the daily challenges. Again, I'm not a specialist to know how much is real and how much is fiction, but I suppose they had a consultant and based the action on the specialist's recommendation. It's an excellent reminder of how people can be different and how we need to try to find a way to live with them.

The cast is very good, there are a couple of irritating characters, but those are intentional and much needed.

I was wondering how it is to play this role as during the 4 seasons, you only see Ella smiling from Ella. She doesn't know what a smile is or what the word having fun means. Annette Frier did an excellent job playing Ella Schön.

On a personal level I couldn't help but putting myself in Ella's shoes and think of what life it would be for me if I'd have Asperger's syndrome. Obviously you are judging everything in a different way, depending on which side you're representing, but it was an interesting experience.

There were a few things I specially enjoyed and I'm going to list them here.

I mentioned Ella's style earlier. Even so she looked the same most of the time, I liked her style very much. Biking, walking on the beach with high hills is not something many do, but she does it regularly.

Cristina's style on the other hand is the exact opposite, as relaxed as it can be. I loved her lose cardigans and those T-shirts with emotional/motivational messages. I would only wear those while on vacation, but it suited her very well. The photo above says it all. Most likely there's not one person who would act like her in her situation in real life, as that chaos and uncertainty is not easy to handle, but it's nice to see her being happy.

As I mentioned, the beach was something to envy, but even better, Ella's small house, which was a huge and lovely living room with big window and lovely wooden furniture and floor ... I could live there all my life. However, the chaotic life they had is not so appealing to me 😆.

As I mentioned at the beginning of my post, the rating shows people either like it or hate it, the middle area is not represented in this case. I can understand for some people, Ella's robotic behavior and lack of social skills and understanding can be irritating, but for me it wasn't at all. Obviously the situation would be different if I'd hat to live or work with such a person.

I think this series will be an eternal favorite for me.

By the way, I'm becoming a huge fan of German movies and series and I see they know what quality means. I don't speak German, so I need to find a language I understand and translation is key in these cases, but so far I can't complain.

Let's see how many of you have you seen it, or if you've met any Asperger's autists. Most likely some of you will say Elon Musk is Asperger's autist as well, but you don't know him. What's you may have seen about him is not enough to have an opinion.
